Hamas: Mubarak helping Israel starve Gaza Palestinians
Militant group says Egypt's planned steel barrier will bolster blockade of 1.5 million Gazans.
By DPA Tags: Egypt Hamas Gaza Israel newsHamas on Monday sharply criticized Egyptian President Hosny Mubarak's defense of his country's expanded fortifications on its border with the Gaza Strip.
The Egyptian government has faced rising domestic and regional criticism since a report first published by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz said Egypt was building an underground steel barrier along the Gaza border to curtail smuggling through tunnels under the border.
"Mubarak's remarks defending the steel wall are an address on the blockade of 1.5 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip," Hamas spokesman Mushir al-Masri told reporters in Gaza City.
The Egyptian president's statements "contradict his earlier remarks that he would not allow the starvation of the Palestinian people in Gaza," al-Masri accused.
On Sunday Mubarak marked the national annual Police Day holiday by declaring: "Fortifications along our eastern border are a work of Egyptian sovereignty, and we refuse to enter into a debate with anyone [about them]."
A lucrative smuggling trade in basic commodities, contraband but also in weapons has taken root along the Gazan-Egyptian border since Egypt and Israel closed the territory's borders after Hamas took control of its security services nearly three years ago.
"Egypt's steel wall does not serve the interests of any Arab party," Hamas' al-Masri said Monday. "The Israeli occupation benefits from it, because it has killed the last lifeline keeping the Gaza Strip alive after two and a half years of siege."
Egypt has repeatedly defended its efforts to increase the security of its eastern border as a matter of "sovereignty" and "national security."

Has anyone ever thought that it is hamas who are starving their own people by acting like they have no brain? Stop terrorism and work for peace, Israel will open up the gates, you will learn that help is available from around the world...
Given that report your cite is true it's probably thanks to the tunnels that Egypt now aims to barricade not thanks to the generosity of the Israeli Gaza Prison Warden. Is the Am-Mex and other border barriers models you aspire to? All police are attacked where justice is felt to be denied and as they are instruments of the state. Perhaps less so in Israel as the state and its people are more in harmony (brain-washed). The Egyptian courts are trying a case of alleged murder, happens everywhere. Remove the stone (WMD) blinding your own eye.
Israel must be forced from Palestine. Hamas was democratically elected.
succeed, and justice will be restored. Actually Hamaas has recognized 1967 borders, you dumbo!
dancing in the streets ! Meanwhile, shut their lights and power off and cut off their water.
How dare Egypt make attempts to stop the elected rulers of Gaza from smuggling guns and rockets thru Egypt into Gaza illegally? Since when does a country have a right to stop illegal arms from being smuggled across its lands? The nerve of these people! Mubarak should risk the aid it gets from the USA because Hamas has no other way to smuggle in its rockets and guns and if Egypt does this then how can we expect Hamas to continue its armed struggle against the Zionist swine. All Hamas is trying to do is feed its people and kill Jews, we should all support them.
the children of Gaza are suffering beckose what they parents and the Hamas gov is doing to them, it has nothing to do with Israel or Egypt or anybody ells : MAKE PEACE. accept others and the world is at yours feet, this is as old as the world.
Just as PA (under Arafat) did not spend a pie on infrastructure development in either Gaza Strip or West Bank (but diverted all aid given to Arafat's secret bank-accounts in Ostend), Hamas diverts moneys to producing rockets and not to improving infrastructure. Contrary to critics (who do not even know real situation) such as directrob and Tony Silver, the "Palestinians" always had the power to improve their own lot (Gaza is the size of Singapore, and receives much aid from Arab countries) as do the dwellers of Dharavi (world's largest slum, which produces $1 billion worth of EXPORT GOODS each year)--but unlike the Dharavites, "Palestinians" only feed their own hatreds (against Jews and Israel)!
some ppl here have something to complain about Egypt defending it's borders from illegal tunnels, that the smuggles are using to bring drugs guns, rockets, medicine?? and so on, since when smuggling is legal all over the world? it sounds like you ppl have some investment in illegal smuggling and a bad investment, but that is yours problem hmmmm.
May I remind you that all the wars that the Arabs started against Israel they lost? And if they start again it will happen again and again, and you and the likes of you kip dreaming hehehe
what's yours problem? You wont the Israelis to go backwords700 years like the idiots from Gaza and trow stones at each other???and home made rockets??Hamas wont's the war so they get it, you have stupid complains.Get a education.
Israeli takes all the blame while the Arab and Muslim countries do nothing. It is not just the Israeli's. Arabs have done nothing, in fact they have done everything they could not to help the Palestinians. They refuse them entry and aid. Why should Israel be blamed for everything? I know they are "occupiers" but where is everyone else? How many times have these other Arab countries kicked out the Pals? And Hamas? They advocate violence, then blame others for their acts. If they truly want peace, renounce violence. Its seems as though, the only people who truely want peace ar the normal Pals, Israeli's and Arabs....not their Govs. Such a disgrace.....the governments that are supposed to rep the people only rep their own bank accounts....bunch of Pricks!!! Its time the people jopin hands and banish all these so called governments. Make peace with each other, and leave the "leaders" to rot!
I don't think there can be progress until Hamas is gone from Gaza. They have made no efforts to reform (they are probably incapable of it--they don't know right from wrong.) This is an issue that should be undertaken by the best minds from Israel, the PA, the US, the EU, UN, and any others whose contributions might accomplish their removal, and everyone must act in tandem.
It does appear strange that the Egyptian governement should work with Israel to starve the Gazans, and as far as I am aware, much to the intense displeasure of most Egyptians. However, when you bear in mind that Egypt is the second largest recipient of US aid, after Israel of course, it falls into place - Mubarak's crew do their paymaster's bidding.
Durson, Your post states that you are for True Democratic governments. One's that have fair and free elections at intervals as per constitution or laws. So Are you with Fatah for calls for an election in Gaza? what about other places like that are ruled by dictators? Lebanon: if you truly care for the democratic process, you would be against Hezbollah's addition to cabinet as this is what the Lebanese Peoples voted against in their election. So, Durson, please confirm: you are against Hezbollah in Lebanon not because of its beliefs, albeit possible, but because of how it is disturbing the democratic processes of Lebanon contrary to Lebanese peoples wishes and constitution as construed from their election results where this was a main voting issue. Problem: Durson never critiques only praises Hezbollah, so then how can her post of today not be in disrepute? Love to hear your spin on the matter Ms Durson so please do write back and haaretz please post
One day Hamas sat down with their Gazan-made narghilas loaded with dope and began to draft a Charter of Death & Destruction against the Israelis. Not realizing their brains were flooding their bloodstreams with dophamine and with false assumptions of bravado and comradery, they stood up in their stupor and did stupid things like instigate acts of war against a superior neighbor. Failing to achieve their ends they decided the best way forward was to this time order in larger, Iranian made ghayloons with even larger quantities of dope. Surely this time the superior Israelis would cower before Hamas' superior pipe dreams. Should we track down through DNA testing some real descendants of the Philistines who know how to build in Gaza even though their rusty but practical knowledge would be 3000yrs. old?
A child doesn't know the difference between the affect of an earthquake or dime munitions. Your arrogance and lack of concern for the average Gazan civilian is barbaric. Maybe you should be trapped inside a war zone one day. That may humble your attitude.
Doesn't it bother you in the least that Gazans have no freedom of movement? Generally speaking most people in the world are apolotical. It's the same with the people living in Gaza. Because of Israel, Hundreds of thousands of young Gazans are missing out on opportunities to travel and study abroad.
increase the security of its eastern border as a matter of "sovereignty" and "national security." and Egyptian President Mubarak added, "we refuse to enter into a debate with anyone [about them]." Compare that to Israel Supreme Court that steal legislative and executive powers to allow freedom of movements to arab terrorists on any route including route 443 . No wonders these dhimmedias backed cocktail party judges fighted Justice Minister Friedmann's reform to have the Knesset appoint judges .
Hamas is exaggerating for propaganda value. Neither accusation is exactly true. Mubarak is doing what he has to to honor the Peace Treaty with Israel. There is no Egyptian intent to starve anyone. Israel is allowing just enough food going in to prevent starvation.
If you begin supporting peace with your neighbour, if you decide to build a country by engaging in productive work, if you invest your effort in economy rather that war, if your government chooses diplomacy rahter than conspiracy... Things will look different for you.
about the totally FAKE stories of starvation and proper access to food shipments. honestly, sometimes it seems the europeans and other anti-israel foreigners on this board want nothing more than to chide us in total darkness. are you afraid of witnessing the truth? what if your gazans aren't starving? what then? what if it's not an apartheid? will you make it up to israel, all your negative energy you've expended until now? i doubt it.
and murderers. Irgun/Stern---Leader--Menachem Begin Hagannah--leader---Yitzak Shamir Most of Israel,s leaders --with the exception of Netanyahu were /are terrorists. The latter is just a terrorist/War Criminal in waiting.
As for conditions in Gaza. In August 2009 the UN in the Occupied Palestinian Territory issued a special focus report available on the net. It reported no hunger, no shortage of drugs, no special health problems. It is mad that this report, clearly not an Israeli "Hasbara", is not read by those who should read it. It is mad how people from abroad are sticking their nose into Egyptian affairs in the a typical imperialistic fashion. Presently in Egypt Hizbulla terorists are being tried for attemped murder. Turkish students supported by their government attacked Egyptian police ( try it in Turkey) and UK MP was telling Egyptians how to be better Arabs. Here people are telling Egypt how to fence its borders. Did you see Morroco border with Spain? USA border with Mexico ? and other borders all over the globe?
Good points Durson - so do you post the same level of vitriolic comments on any Egyptian newpaper sites? Spend any time on a Sudanese blog? Leave any scathing comments on any Iranian sites? The list goes on - clearly Israel has a special place in your heart (as small as it is).
SOme of us have learned that there are countries and populations who are aimply not ready for democracy for one reason or another. While Saddam was responsible for the deaths of thousands of his own people, he was able to prevent most of the violence between Shia and Sunni in Iraq. Today, those two factions continue to fight, killing their own. And the US gets splattered with the backlash. So were we right or wrong? I doubt that Mubarak licks the boots of Israel. But like most people, he enjoys peace and prosperity and he certainly recognizes the potential for reigniting war with Israel if he supports Hamas. Egyptian efforts to mediate between Israel and Hamas have fallen on deaf ears on both sides, and like our president, he undoubtedly has bigger priorities than to babysit two recalcitrant, whiney brats. The new wall is likely to be an effort to distance himself from a group that espouses violence, refuses to embrace peace, and has never enjoyed much support worldwide.
if not mr,MUBARAK egypt gona becam democratic alike democratic iran and demokratic irak & meny other asian and african contrys
does hamas have a seige and sanction on gaza? who does?
even being zion's lapdoggie and starving muslems...its going to be a long time for you in hell mubarak
When we get involved in the politics of other countries, we are inevitably condemned by people just like you. Right or wrong, when we invaded Iraq, we deposed a despot responsible for the murders of hundreds of thousands of his own people, and were roundly accused of hegemony in the name of oil. We lost 3000 people in New York because of our presence in Saudi Arabia and our support for Israel. So here is a big question for you. Are we entitled to meddle in all middle eastern politics, or only the ones YOU think are evil?
The people of Gaza voted for Hamas knowing full well what its policies would be. They had stars in their eyes, thinking "resistence", which actually amounts to elimination of Israel, would work. So, for the most part, Gazans have exactly what they deserve. Actually, what they have is much better than what they deserve because of an extraordiarily human Israeli public that continues to deliver water, fuel, medicines and food to nourish and protect those that seek the destruction of Israel. Some Gazans are suffering and are innocent. There are abused children throughout Gaza that are true victims of Hamas & their vile parents but for the most part the distinction between Hamas & ordinary Gazas is a false dichotomy. When Gazans vote for a party that promotes peace & stops seeking the destruction of Israel, things will change for the better in Gaza. For now, Gazans should consider themselves very lucky that Israel is not more aggressive.
Mushir al-Masri, CANADA and the World are no longer NAIVE to your Iranian style dictatorship. Give your PEOPLE a LIFE and a FUTURE, its sickening to see the Hamas leadership cowering in their ivory towers while their people are used for time bombs and pawns at their souls expense. There is a very bright future for the pals if they would be civilized like the rest of the world and live peacefully with their neighbors
Number of people that have EVER starved in Gaza - 0. The Gaza strip is awash with food. The markets are full and nobody is going hungry. Yet another lie by the Arabs.
rockets on Israelis? If they were "starving" they would surrender to Israel's demands, make peace, and will send 1 soldier back to his home.
in the plight of Palestinians in Gaza. HAMAS has before it three demands by Israel and the quartet. 1. It stop its violence against Israeli civilians. 2. It stop its incitement against Israelis (no more Farfur the suicide bomber mouse and friends). 3. Agree to accept previous agreements signed by Israel and the Palestinian Authority (you want to be recognized as a government rather than a terrorist organization, prove it). Fact is, HAMAS continues to send rockets over the border, continues to utter death threats against Israel, continues to reject the idea of peace. . . .Hell, they can't even come to terms with Fatah let alone Israel. The reality is, HAMAS wants to have its Jihad and eat its cake too. Unfortunately, that's going to come at the expense of the regular Palestinians living in Gaza. HAMAS may hold onto its goal of a Kamikazi quest. But the world shouldn't be expected to act as its enabler, and certainly Israel, the target of its violence.
stop crying there are real tragedies in the world look at haiti, not the man made tragedies create by hamas for political benefits. preach peace to your people and the sufering will stop
Shame on them for lying like this. There is starvation in the world - look at parts of Africa, and now in Haiti, real suffering. I saw the pictures in the Arabic press of Gaza markets full to the bring of not just essentials but sweets and pastries, nuts, and spices. Gaza may have poverty but it never has had the poverty of one bowl of rice a day and fighting for clean water - or walking a mile or two to get it, never mind no medicine, no education, no security. Poverty is also about circumstance - some have two or three wives and ten children on a labourer's salary, that will be poverty, if would be hard even if you were a teacher or doctor too. Gaza has what it needs but not what it wants but Hamas keeps saying it was elected so it is justified (democracy is more than being about elected , and elected democracy does not brutally kill the opposition either) As to Egypt, most stuff comes via Israel, not Egypt, so how does it matter?
Of Gazan shops filled with food, and visited by Gazan shoppers. If you're going to declare that your population is starving, people going to market in an orderly fashion doesn't really give weight to that argument. Indeed, compare and contrast the images of Gaza with those in Hati, where people were pillaging shops for food and water. That, tragically, is starving. Of course, the fact that Israel is sending in truckloads of food daily also to the lie that Gaza is starving.
When you pin a trapped animal, even the most timid, it will come out fighting with a terrible ferocity, because they have nothing to lose. In addition, you are refusing to negotiate honestly in the West Bank. All hell is going to break loose and whether or not you kill another 1500 or 15000 Palestinians will be inconsequential, because Hamas, Hezbollah, and it's associates in the West Bank will start shooting rockets from those three areas into Tel Aviv and the heart of Israel and a lot of Israeli civilians are going to die. Then you will cry and whine it was the fault of the Arabs, or Al-Qaeda or Iran, but it won't matter, all those Israeli's will still be dead. Don't continue to make these mistakes thinking Netanyahu will be able to pull you out of it, because he can't raise people from the dead either. This time, your enemy has anti-tank rockets, anti-ship rockets, anti-aircraft rockets, and long range Iranian rockets. This will be a different war than Cast Lead.
lost the Human feelings! Israeli Lethal Weapons against Hamas Mickey Mouse Firework called "rockets"!
Could it be that Gaza's predicament has more to do with the fact that it is run by Islamic terrorists bent on Israel's destruction rather than Egypt's support of the U.S. and Israel? Even the Arabs have had enough of the violence and carnage perpetrated by fundamentalist Islam.
let us all have names and addresses for your allegations ?????????? less geneve in your coffee!
And this steel barrier wouldn't be necessary. The fact they are crying about is priceless.
You claim that Israel is "killing people with the boycot" [sic] Pleaser substantiate your claim with figures.
You claim that Israel is "killing people with the boycot" [sic] Pleaser substantiate your claim with figures.
A freely-elected democracy? You guessed wrong. An Islamic theocracy, Iran-style? You guessed right.
If there was any mass starvation and rampant sickness in Gaza WHO ( world health organization)as well as Red crescent would be clamoring to the UN. It is totally unbelievable that intelligent people...even those that constantly bash Israel on this site can agree to this nonsense. As much as you hate Israel, the government allows as much foodstuffs and medicine into Gaza as necessary and required by international law. In past history name one country that allowed anything into another country that was constantly attacking it. Egypt wants its soverignty and the main reason for the tunnels is to try to stop or slowdown arm smuggling. Believe it or not Egypt does not want Israel to fall.
I think in the long run, Gazans would get a better deal from Israelis than they would from their fellow Arabs or even Iran. Haaretz censors should use discretion when printing posts that are critical of the Egyptian Government. Never embarass Egypt.
Hamas has done a stirling job of depriving Palestinians without any help.
Correction, Mubarak isnt licking any israeli boots, but american boots, who back him and provide $$$ to him. So this time, please, blame your own goverment.
this is a clue from hamas !
Can't they just cut through the barrier with blow-torches? This metal wall is just for show!
You do not need to feel sorry for Hamas, but you should feel sorry for the people in Gaza. You are killing people with the boycot (because the lack of proper medical care). You are destroying lifes with the boycot. As for the "extortionists murderers" and "expert terrorists" this is what you get when you lock up 1.5 million people and throw away the key.
It is a strategy that has worked well for him. He has been the "dictator" of Egypt for almost 30 years. Is there anyone in the world that has been longer in office? Is there any less democratic system so well praised and supported by Israel and America? Licking a few Israeli boots beats house hunting every few years. At least for Mubarak.
The free and democratic world needs to help the egyptians get rid of their dictatorship and install democracy in the country.
As usual, the Gazan leadership finds someone to blame for the situation in Gaza. And as usual, it is everyone but Gaza's democratically elected leadership!
why don't I feel sorry for them?
