Hamas: Kidnappers of BBC reporter afraid to release him

Hamas official says militant group claiming to hold Alan Johnston fear they will be harmed if he is freed.

By The Associated Press

Kidnappers of British reporter Alan Johnston have not released him for fear they will be harmed if they do now that Hamas controls Gaza, a senior Hamas official said Saturday.

Mahmoud Zahar, a hardline Hamas leader, has been overseeing negotiations between the militant group and The Army of Islam, which claims to hold British Broadcasting Corp. correspondent Alan Johnston.

Johnston was snatched from a Gaza City street March 12. The kidnappers are afraid, afraid, Zahar said in a lecture at a Gaza mosque.

Previously The Army of Islam had demanded Britain free a jailed Muslim militant in exchange for Johnston's release.

But after Hamas took over the Gaza Strip last week and has vowed to crack down on anarchy, the shadowy hard-line group that is believed to have some links to Hamas now fears it will be targeted if it releases Johnston.

Hamas is still trying to convince the clan associated with the group that they would not be killed if they hand over Johnston, even providing written guarantees, Zahar said. But the clan also fears other tribes will attack them, he said.

Hamas had vowed last week to use all means to release the Briton. But Zahar's comments indicated Hamas may be taking a softer line toward the kidnappers.

" But the clan also fears other tribes will attack them." Finally a glimpse of what I have been saying since his kidnapping. I had recieved a phone call from the BBC after writing to the "Over to You" show on the World Service. I had written that the BBC was not in a postion to report on Gaza, since they feared any criticsm would put their reporter in added danger. I told them that Alan was most likely kidnapped not by Hamas but by some members of a clan in Beit Hanoun. In fact Alan had been reporting on inter-clan revenge violence. when he was kidnapped I was certain it had to be one of the crazy brothers in one of the clans. Now I have been proven correct, satisfying. But what about Alan? How much f@#%king sweet tea can a guy drink? ( is extended tea consumption a war crime?)

Don't say this. Show the world the body of Johnston if what you say is real. The family deserves to have the body back to be buried. If a man cannot do anything else, at least have some sense of decency to send back the body or tell people where his body is.

The virulent and one-sided anti-Israeli stance of the BBC and Johnston has come back to bite them in the proverbial backside. The BBC doesn't even have the decency to critise their Palestinian brethren for a despicable act of terrorism in any more than the weakest of language. No wonder Britain has a major Muslim problem! I am surprised they haven't found a way to blame Israel for the kidnapping, but be sure that we will hear all about the Palestinian's humane behaviour towards Johnston when he is released. Bunch of sicko colonialists.

No other kidnappers were ever punished after they released their captives. A written guarantee from Hamas means nothing and the Darmush know that. If Hamas wanted the Darmush dead, they'd be long gone. There really is nothing to gain by holding Johnston. The reason he can't be released is because he's dead.

British reporter Alan Johnston although an infidel like myself is well known to be a great supporter of pro Palestinian causes. It would not surprise me if his kidnapping is little more then a publicity stunt. He may also be working for MI6 but then so many Palestinians are also so this should not be problem.

I fail to see why the kidnappers of Mr. Johnston will not release him. I have been privileged to see the draft letter from HAMAS in relation to this matter. It reads: Dear Sirs, On behalf of HAMAS, the freely elected government of the Palestinian people, we hereby undertake not to harm you in any way if you release our dear British friend Al Johnston. We promise not to blow you up with suicide bombers, fire kassam rockets at you, throw you off a building or any other nasty thing. As you know our word is our bond and we would never dream of engaging in any violent act against our bretheren, our fellow Palestinians. Now be good lads and let our Al go before we come after you and cut out your innards without mercy. Signed on behalf of HAMAS, Khaled Mashaal and Ismail Haniyah. These people are really not very sporting; this is not cricket. How can they not dream of relying on such a cast iron guarantee from such upstanding fellows?

Hamas are in it up to teh eyeballs. Probably Johnstone too. Just stop reporting on it until they realise the story no longer has any newsworthiness, then they may as well release him as he will no longer be useful to them as a PR stunt.
