Hamas: Jordan or Egypt likely behind Dubai hit

Dubai to FBI: Check up on credit cards used by suspects in Hamas hit; UAE probing Israeli involvement.

By Reuters Tags: Israel Mossad Hamas Israel news

Hamas suspects the security forces of an Arab state were behind the assassination of a senior group operative in Dubai earlier this year, the Al-Quds Al-Araby daily reported on Tuesday.

Mahmoud Nasser, a member of Hamas' political bureau, told the newspaper that slain commander Mahmoud al-Mabhouh was likely being tracked by agents from Jordan and Egypt prior to the January 19 killing.

Nasser said he had been given information regarding such efforts to kill Mabhouh, adding that the evidence indicated that the assassination was carried out earlier than the alleged agents had planned.

According to Nasser, Mabhouh was in possession of "dangerous" information seen as dangerous to particular Arab elements seeking to topple Islamist resistance.

Nasser oversees Hamas' ties with Iran and worked closely with Mabhouh, sometimes referred to as his deputy. Hamas raised these accusations after a prelimary investigation immediately following the murder, and match early suspicions raised by Dubai as well.

The UAE-based The National reported earlier Tuesday that Dubai has asked the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation to look into U.S.-issued pre-paid credit cards used by suspects in Mabhouh's killing.

Citing an FBI source, The National newspaper said the investigation will look into any Israeli involvement in the assassination at a Dubai luxury hotel.

"Thirteen of the 27 suspects used prepaid MasterCards issued by MetaBank, a regional American bank, to purchase plane tickets and book hotel rooms," the paper said, citing Dubai police.

Police chief Dahi Khalfan Tamim said on Monday that Israel's intelligence agency Mossad had "insulted" Dubai and other countries whose forged passports were used by suspects in the assassination of the Hamas military commander in the emirate.

Tamim also said a 27th member of the team that killed Mabhouh in his hotel room had been identified.

The police chief also said that travelers suspected of being Israeli will not be allowed into the United Arab Emirates even if they arrive with alternative passports.

He did not explain what procedures would be used to identify the Israeli visitors, except that the police will "develop skills" to recognize Israelis by "physical features and the way they speak."

It was also unclear if the measure would apply to Israeli athletes competing in international sports events in the Emirates and how it could affect Israel's participation in international meetings here.

The illegitimate use of British passports to perpetrate a "crime" leaves GB feeling like an old whore who has been raped and pistol-whipped after enjoying a wonderfully successful and lucrative business when young and beautiful. So yes, Britain does need to reestablish the validy of ALL its passports, not just the ones held by British-Israelis. Do you really think that there are really only 12 forged British passports circulating around the world? But here's the real point Chris: Does Britain have to blame Israel for its passport debacle? Especially now, as every day passes and it becomes clearer that the wild accusations of the Dubai clown are nothing more than stories out of the second volume of the Arabian Nights?

"Hamas suspects the security forces of an Arab state were behind the assassination..." According to Mahmoud Nasser, a member of Hamas' political bureau, the security forces of an Arab state were tracking al-Mabhouh *before* Jan 19 and then had him killed *on* that date - earlier than they had originally planned. Now I don't know whether Mahmoud Nasser is right or wrong. Neither do you. Neither does anybody. That's the point. Nobody knows who was ultimately behind the killing. But for you now to say that you will "wait until the findings" of the criminal investigations before drawing any conclusions is pious cant. You jumped to your conclusions (which just happened to accord with your prejudices) from Day 1 of this story. And by calling for punitive measures to be taken against "those British passport holders who also hold Israeli passports" you have pre-judged (not awaited) the outcome of the criminal investigations. That's your idea of "justice", Chris.

Marking British passport holders with Israeli/British dual citizenship basically means that you are branding the person who is traveling as a Jew, and that's neither safe for the person concerned nor smart for the British government to do. Just for your information, the Germans put a little J (for Jude) on every German Jewish holder's passport during the Nazi era. How about if the British government simply makes sure that every British citizen is issued the most up-to-date and secure passport, (machine readable with biometric chips)? I would think that these are nearly impossible to forge, aren't they?

visions. "As it will be demonstrated below, the decision by the Zionist leadership to accept the 1947 proposed UN GA Partition plan was nothing but a smoke screen, which was done solely to gain international recognition and support. This deception was a political ploy to gain initial international legitimacy for the existence of the "Jewish state", and this was well known to the Palestinian people. The reader is urged to contemplate the following Zionist leaders' quotes in an open mind. Note that most, if not all, of the quotes below are dated before the entry of any single Arab Army into British Mandated Palestine: * In a letter Chaim Weizmann sent to the Palestine-British high Commissioner, while the Peel Commission was convening in 1937, he stated: "We shall spread in the whole country in the course of time ..... this is only an arrangement for the next 25 to 30 years." (Expulsion Of The Palestinians, p. 66) * Ben-Gurion emphasized that the acceptance of the Peel Commission would not imply static borders for the future "Jewish state". In a letter Ben-Gurion sent to his son in 1937, he wrote: "No Zionist can forgo the smallest portion of the Land Of Israel. [A] Jewish state in part [of Palestine] is not an end, but a beginning ..... Our possession is important not only for itself ... through this we increase our power, and every increase in power facilitates getting hold of the country in its entirety. Establishing a [small] state .... will serve as a very potent lever in our historical effort to redeem the whole country." (Righteous Victims, p. 138) * In 1938, Ben-Gurion made it clear of his support for the "Jewish state" on part of Palestine was only as a stepping ground for a complete conquest. He wrote: "[I am] satisfied with part of the country, but on the basis of the assumption that after we build up a strong force following the establishment of the state--we will abolish the partition of the country and we will expand to the whole Land of Israel." (Expulsion Of The Palestinians, p. 107 & One Palestine Complete, p. 403) * One day after the UN vote to partition Palestine, Menachem Begin, the commander of the Irgun gang and Israel's future Prime Minister between 1977-1983, proclaimed: "The Partition of Palestine is illegal. It will never be recognized .... Jerusalem was and will for ever be our capital. Eretz Israel will be restored to the people of Israel. All of it. And for Ever." (Iron Wall p. 25) * ""Shamir has said Israel must keep the territories in order to accommodate the immigrants. "A great aliyah [immigration]," he said, "requires a Greater Israel."(5) He has insisted that, although Soviet Jews are not being directed to the territories, any Jew has the right to live anywhere in the land of Israel, which for most Israelis includes the territories.

Her stubborn refusal to even accept HAMAS's suggestions as to who did the hit shows that she just wants to create confusion to deflect from her own guilt! But why the hit? He was useless as an arms trader and too much money seemed to be ending up into Switzerland (Dina as contact man) via HBSC Bank ((Chris Linthwaite's account) and back into Dubai (to be laundered by Chinese).. Waste not, want not! Natallie "Its those Zionists" Durson and Chris "Yellow stars for British Jew's passports" Linthwaite to the rescue.

    • CM

    • 20:53

How abondoning violence is contravening law? Regognizing Israel as a Jewish state means that Israel is a guarantor of respect of Jewsih people human rights (no other country in the world guarantees it). In practice it means that Israel is THE decision maker on what does and what does not endangeour human rights of Jewsish people. Israel therefore is the only party entitled to decide who can and who can not be it's citizen. That settles the question of Arabs claiming settlement rights in Israel. Turning the claim that Israel role as Jewsih state deny other peopels religious rights is dishonesty. Israel dids on that matter bely its critics claims. Once violance ends, Israel is recognized, very fast improvements will take place. Check points will disappier. Trust will come up. Security will be enjoyed by all. In due course borders will come down etc.

"Anyone notice that Hamas says it was Jordan or Egypt behind the hit? This means Mossad was not involved." Nice amateur logic there, Harry. You can somhow make the jump that some sort of involvement by Egypt or Jordan "...means Mossad was not involved". Are you too thickheaded to understand that, due to peace treaties between Egypt and Israel as well as Jordan and Israel, either one of these countries could easily have shared intel with Israel that was necessary for Israel to carry out the hit? Or are you just one of those who always repeats the old mantra "It's always the Arabs, never Israel".

Please read my post again. Based on your response, it appears that you may have misread it. What I said was that Egypt's or Jordan's involvement in some peripheral way does not automatically clear Israel. It is very likely that Israel would have had some help in gathering intel and in tracking Mabhouh's movements from one or both of those countries. Saying that any involvement from them somehow excludes Israel's involvement is quite a foolish leap. No matter who was involved, at this point it seems that Israel had the lead in this operation. If clear, irrefutable evidence is presented that implicates someone other than Israel as the culprit, then of course I would NOT deem Israel guilty. As of now there is no such evidence.

Are you serious? What rot! I agree with you, certainly, that the prime minister of Israel should: (1) come clean; (2) arrest the head of Mossad for engaging in illegal activities and using fake passports; (3) name each and every participant in the operation and turn them over to Dubai or Interpol or Australia or some fine upstanding organization or country; (4) open the borders of Israel to all; (5) agree that all Israelis will start wearing yellow stars and targets on their backs and will begin to board the boxcars; (6) resign.

What if the Lod airport is not the source of security breakdown? What if it is the data base in the UK that is not secure? And why has that possibility not once occurred to several of the concerned participants on this forum?

If racial profiling is used at ben Gurion Airport. Why can't it be used in other places? If all dual nationals need to be tagged then so be it. Although the security breach appears to be predominantly (I mean all trying to be clever) amongst those who hold joint Israeli/British citizenship. Or should we just ignore the threat, or the risk that this loophole used in Dubai could also be replicated by Al Qaeda? So seriously, what do you propose should happen? Because if this story is true, then two countries which has had activity from Al Qaeda are actively cloning passports rendering every single thing put in place after 9/11 ineffective.

whatever happened to the two Palestinians arrested after the assasination? All this evidence that points to the Mossad is a little to convenient. It doesn't seem plausible that Mossad would let its agents be tracked so easily. Sunni Arab interests do not want to see a Nuclear Iran or an armed Hamas either. If it was it would not have been published in this moderated forum, or if it was published and there was justification for your accusations it would have been reviewed and deleted by a moderator. I'll repeat I rejected the use of the Yellow Star of David as an identification on the passport. I notice you have not taken up my suggestion of protecting the identities of those with joint Israeli/British nationality if this story is true.

If Jordan and Egypt have successfully forged 12 british passports with the identities (all confirmed) of 12 British/Israeli citizens. Then there has been a monumental security breach. What would you propose should be done to re-establish the security and the validity of those passports belonging to those with joint british/Israeli citizenship? Because nothing is not an option. Particularly as this breach in security undermines everything put in place after 9/11. Even the watch list your government relies on to keep bad people out of the US is rendered useless. Unless of course the United States is going to ban all British, Australian, French, German and Irish passport holders. As none at this time can be guaranteed as been valid passports, and may just as easily have been cloned by Al Qaeda operatives. THAT is what we are talking about. A total breakdown in the entire concept of The Passport.

What would you propose to restore the integrity of the british passport as a travel document. And importantly protect those of British/Israeli nationality. Lots of people saying you can't do that, but nobody suggesting a response to the fact that 12 british passports were forged with the identities of 12 British/Israeli nationals down to the correct passport number. Looks like Natalie gave her response, but it wan't the one you were hoping for. She clearly and intelligently explained the obvious fact that you and the rest of the Israeli apologists seem to want to ignore. And that is that even if Egypt or Jordan was involved in some way in this fiasco, that does NOT ABSOLVE ISRAEL!! Israel's stamp is all over this operation and it is not out of the realm of possibilities that Israel may indeed have gotten some kind of help from Egypt or Jordan. The main issue here is, and always has been, the blatant misuse of the passports of countries friendly to Israel in order to conduct an extra-judicial killing. Why couldn't Israel, with their supposed top notch intelligence agency, have tracked and arrested this guy and put him on trial or in a military tribunal just like the U.S. is doing?? The answer is simple. Israel finds it preferable to label someone a terrorist and then use that label to justify killing him.

I have proposed severely restricting travel between Pakistan and the United Kingdom. Since it appears most terrorist plots discovered in the UK emminate from there. I am not proposing punishing those who legitimately hold british passports. In fact by making their use in the manner they were used in Dubai again by person or countries unknown (although I still believe it is Mossad) impossible. It will be protecting those Britons who jointly hold Israeli passports. Neither have I proposed revoking yours or anyone else's citizenship. However if this story is correct, then there hasd been a monumental breakdown in the security of your's and anyone else's in your position passport. Putting not just you but anyone else who uses a British Passport at risk. Which means something must be done urgently to protect yourself and anyone else who is in your position whilst ensuring the integrity of the british Passport. I rejected the use of the Yellow Star of David. How can that be anti semitic? And when you consider the numbers of British passports used where there is dual Israeli nationality. And the suggestion that it is Jordan and Egypt which suggests a widescale collapse in the security of British passports where the owner has dual British/Israeli nationality, and the possibility that Al Qaeda may use this loophole. What would you suggest, to re-establish the security of these particular passports? Other than making their use as forgeries impossible by allowing countries to decide whether they wish to allow entry or not. Alternatively British/Israeli nationals will be able to use their Israeli passports for travel whilst retaining the rights of british citizens within the UK. What part of it is anti semitic? 12 passports were used possibly by Mossad or even by Egypt or Jordan. What would you do?

    • Michael
    • 02.03.10
    • 17:20

The trouble with everyone staying where they are, is that it breaks some fundamental principles of international law. Most notably it would allow Israel to keep land seized in war and that breaks just about the most fundamental UN rule, which helps keep the world a slightly safer place. UN 242 specifically notes that any agreement should not violate the principle that territory can't be gained by war. You also need to do something about restoring rights or compensating Pal refugees from Israel and the same for Jews forced out of Middle Eastern countries. And nobody in the world, including the West, is ever going to specifically recognise Israel as Jewish state. It has a srong Jewish identity, fine, no problem, but there won't be recignition as a Jewish state. Does Israel, the ADL and AIPAC specifically recognise the US as a Christian state? Otherwise, great plan.

    Wake up people
    • Natallie Durson
    • 02.03.10
    • 17:18

The Mossad was behind this killing. Even if there was an Egyptian or Jordanian proxy involved. These are the only two Arab states that have a peace treaty with Israel. The first step in finding a murderer is to assess motive. Since Israel always has the greatest motive in the death of any Hamas, Hizbollah, or other anti-Israel militant, this means that Israel will always be the prime suspect. When an "ally" of Israel is implicated, this does not remove all suspicion from Israel. It only goes to method and strategy. In this issue we see the usual two handed response of Israel. On the first hand Israel considers an active Mossad to be a deterrent to its enemies and an asse to the nation. On the other hand, when anything happens which points to Mossad involvement, Israel is all denials. We see this two handed Israeli response in many areas, including the IDF.

Chris, I hold both a British and Israeli passport and I am proud to associate myself with both countries. Your proposal is wrong because it assumes that all dual passport holders are guilty before the fact i.e. because s/he has a British & Israeli passport s/he is going to abuse the British passport or possibly (unwittingly) allow it to be abused. Would you impose this type of measure on muslim Britons because some who have dual nationality have been involved in terrorism? I don't think you would - so please reconsider.

I wasn't aware that the passports that you suggest weren't implicated in a murder in Dubai. Yet 12 (twelve) dual nationals with joint british/israeli citizenship are. Are you seriously suggesting that it should be business as usual? It doesn't have to be a visible means of identification that the General Public can see. It can be an electronic means of identification built into the new chips now embedded in passports. Which shows up when the passports are electronically scanned. Alternatively they can travel on their Israeli passport. I am not suggesting their citizenship be revoked, I am suggesting simple security measures, to ensure that the british passport can be accepted with confidence. Australia, Ireland, France and Germany may wish to follow suite.

You are being facetious. What I am suggesting is that it is obvious that a british passport owned by someone who is an Israeli dual national should be marked so that it is easily identifiable, and can therefore subject to extra security measures. If as this story alleges, there is someone with access to israeli passport holders details who isn't stationed at Ben Gurion airport. Then the likliehood of it being abused by Al Qaeda amongst others is very high. We need to put extra security measures in place. I am sure you will agree, and the quickest and easiest way is to mark these passports as such.

The Mossad sends 27 agents(but it seems that accdg. to the Dubai Police Chief, this will soon total hundreds or even thousands of agents) to Dubai to assasinate one Hamas terrorist. The true identities of real Israelis are stolen by Israeli agents to get into Dubai. Why? I ask again, why? Even if the target were the head Hamas terrorist, Haniya, the Mossad would not operate in this manner. Egypt and Jordan are just as motivated as Israel to thwart Hamas, maybe even more. Mabhouh was in possession of something which would cause Egypt/Jordan damage. Thus, it seems certain that Jordan and/or Egypt were behind the hit, and in order to cover their tracks and avoid an internal Arab backlash, and to cause a setback to the rival Mossad, they used Israeli identities. A clever and well thought out plan and brilliantly executed. Kudos, Muhabarat, whichever nation you are from!!

It is not anti semitic. What it does is protect the integrity of the British passport whilst giving foreign governments the option of allowing entry or not. Those who object can travel on their Israeli passport as an alternative. They can even revoke their British citizenship, which of course would be their choice. What is wrong with that?

I have an idea, instead of marking the passports, why don't the British just paint these people a bright florescent pink, that way they will be easily recognized and spotted from far away at night or day, these people will not be able to hide from you.

I have again written to my MP proposing that those British passport holders who also hold Israeli passports, should have them marked as such. Happy? There is a difference in tracking a suspect and killing a suspect. I still believe Mossad was responsible for the slaying. Ia also believe that the Israeli government sanctioned the illegal use of forged passports. There is a criminal investigation going on. I'll wait until the findings of this investigation before announcing that it is clearly a cover up.

Actually I have proposed that the British passports of those who also hold Israeli passports should be marked with the words "Also in possession of an Israeli Passport". Others have proposed a yellow star of David but I think that is a bit to far. If the Israeli government believe that it is OK to abuse the dual nationality system, then Israelis who hold second passports should be singled out for special treatment. Hopefully they will then put pressure on their government to ensure Israel never does this again. Happy?

I bet Mossad is not going twice there. Of course it's shameful that the Dubai authorities, usually moderate, would let their police chief utter such racist rantings as saying he'll identify Israelis on their "looks". They should definitely take him away from the press. That said, the Israeli accent when speaking english is super easy to recognize. So you may want to perfect your Brooklyn accent when traveling...

Why not just send a few low-key Arab assassins and if you really want to implicate Israel, do something subtle and small-scale.

How many Al Quaeda and Taliban are hunted down every day? When one of the senior Hamas terrorists - a guy whose trade in arms pushes peace for Palestinians as well as the region and the world that bit further away all the time - gets whacked, we get all this furore. More proof that even in times of war (and Iran is definitely at war with Israel / U.S. / UK etc through its proxies in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan) it's not ok for Jews to fight back. And that's even if it was Mossad.
