Hamas executes two 'Israel collaborators' in Gaza

This is the first formal execution carried out in Gaza since Hamas seized power from Fatah in 2007.

The Hamas rulers of the Gaza Strip said on Thursday that two Palestinians convicted by a military court of collaborating with Israel have been executed by firing squad.

It was the first time that Hamas has carried out formal executions since the Islamist group seized control of the Gaza Strip three years ago from the rival Fatah party of President Mahmoud Abbas, who governs in the occupied West Bank.

A Hamas government official confirmed the executions after the bodies of two men arrived at a Gaza hospital. The group's Interior Ministry said they were carried out by firing squad.

The Palestinian rights group al-Mizan identified the executed men as Mohammed Ismail and Nasser Abu Freh.

London-based Amnesty International had urged Hamas not to carry out several death sentences against Palestinians convicted of murder and of collaborating with Israel.

Amnesty said proceedings in Hamas military courts do not meet international legal standards.

Under Palestinian law, execution orders can be carried out only with presidential approval. But Hamas does not recognise Abbas's presidency, and the executions represented a further challenge by the group to his authority.

Abbas has refrained from approving death sentences against Palestinians convicted of capital offenses in the West Bank.

This violence can be traced to Israel's illegal occupation ofGaza

As much as everyone must condemn targeted assassinations and executions as horrendous violations of human rights and internation- al law --this violence must be placed in the context of Israel 's un- lawful occupation of Palestinian land in the territories and its hijacking of the Palestinian peoples' sovereign rights and human rights daily at gunpoint- traumatizing and forcing that civilian population and its leadiership to respond to its belligerent presence and interference daily against them often in the same manner. Please see the statement below by Dr, Alice Rothchild and her Jew- ish American medical delegation to Gaza in 2004 noting the effect of Ithe sraeli army?s violence among that civilian population and especially uts effect among young teens in a study done by the Gaza Mental Health Ctr. I believe Dr. Rothchild says it all and why qw must all oppose the US and EU's continued support of Israel as morally reprehensible today.. Dutch Here is Dr. Alice Rothchild writing in her Op-ed in the Baltimore Sun 2005, Stress, trauma strain in Palestinians : ? In a recent trip to Gaza with a Jewish-American medical delegation, we witnessed the devastating consequences for the civilian population of years of Israeli military operations. The checkpoints, closures and the severe restriction on movement and economic activity have con- tributed to rising unemployment, poverty accompanied by unusually high rates of infant mortality, acute and chronic malnutrition and in- adequate outpatient and hospital care. At the Gaza Community Mental Health Program, Dr. Eyad el Sarraj spoke of an entire population suffering from the symptoms of post- traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and depression, a consequence of high unemployment, extreme poverty and massive exposure to violence. A recent study by the program of 10- to 19-year-olds in Gaza found that two-thirds have seen a friend or neighbor killed or wounded, more than one-third have been tear-gassed and 82 percent suffer from moderate to severe PTSD. We know that the more trauma and violence occur in a child's youth, the more risk-taking and violence happen in later life.? Dr. Alice Rothchild Hence Israel is the evil force there forcing this population into un- speakable violence such as execution & destroying their civil society with its belligerent presence all to promote the illegal pvvupation and confiscation of their sovereign land to promote its own sinful and criminal ambitions. The world doesn't expect too much from Hamas, after all they are the terrorists right? Israel however claims to be a democracy (and more) so the world expects more, and if Israel had put 2 Israeli citizens against the wall after a kangaroo military court and shot them it would make news for weeks, and if you can't understand the difference why....

Israeli atrocities get very little coverage by the Western Media, compared to other countries' violations of International law. They are afraid of accusations of anti semitism, among other reasons. Note the BBB's refusal to broadcast a charity humanitarian appeal post Operation Cast Lead. Other stations had no problem broadcasting.

"It was the first time that Hamas has carried out formal executions since the Islamist group seized control of the Gaza Strip three years ago from the rival Fatah party of President Mahmoud Abbas, who governs in the occupied West Bank." Part of the above sentence is a lie. Hamas was legally elected as the government of Palestine. There was an unsuccessful coup attempt in Gaza, an attempted military takeover by Fatah, with full support of Israel and the U.S. What is illegal is the present Palestinian government of Mahmoud Abass in the West Bank, a tool for Israel.

do you think australia has the right to criticise? look what amnesty international wrote e. g. on april 9th 2010: "Amnesty International has condemned the Australian Government's suspension of the processing of new asylum claims by Afghan and Sri Lankan nationals, which is fundamentally inconsistent with Australia's international obligations under the 1951 UN Refugee Convention." http://www.amnesty.org/en/news-and-updates/australia-asylum-suspension-could-harm-worlds-most-vulnerable-2010-04-09

"Even mass murderers of Israelis sit comfortably in prison eating humus and getting visits from their families." As long as they're Jewish mass murderers, Brad. Otherwise they are blown to pieces by helicopter-fired missles, along with the usual anonymous bystanders, children, women etc, who are also killed. The fog of War? Please. Grow up. Israel is a terror state, always has been always will be. The community of humans doesn't need you.

Hamas have committed many, many "informal" executions of innocent Arab people. Normally when someone is accused of being a "collaborator" it means that they were owed some money or a Hamas terrorist coveted his wife. They kill for money and power, not honor.

Fine, the rest of the world can be critical. As to extra-judicial remedies that Israel uses, you say extra judicial and Israel quite properly says self defence. As you know Damian, Israel cannot extradite from Gaza those that seek and attempt to murder its citizens. What do you want Israelis to do? Yes, they can wait on their side of the border but that increases the risk to Israelis and, indeed, as you know the terrorists whose "judicial" system is being criticized are happy to simply lob rockets into Israel. When is the last time the Western world relied on judiciary during the time of war. All this episode highlights is the vicious character of Hamas and their nothing surprising about that and everyone can legitimately criticize Hamas for that. You say you don't support the death penalty. Israel and Israel alone does not have the death penalty. Even mass murderers of Israelis sit comfortably in prison eating humus and getting visits from their families.

Why is this story not all over the western Media?..... Because this is very customary , normally expected by the whole world from Arabs . If they would act differently that would make a real news in the media . Did you hear a squeak from Goldston ????

Is this what Rachel Corrie, your darling , died for in Gaza? Fighting the occupation and getting kangaroo courts instead?

If this had been done by the Israeli's there would 300-500 talkbacks written attacking Israel. With comparisons to the Nazi's and Apartheid governments and much more brutal analogies. The world will be for the most part mute beyond this immediate criticism of Hamas. Again will be see the double standard that is applied to Israel. This story will drop off the media radar in a day maybe two and will get no leading story headlines on TV or radio outlets. When Israel announces just a building permit in Jerusalem in the Jewish part of the city, it rated a two week story and nobody was injured or killed. Yet Hamas using a kangaroo court system to execute people will bring almost no media attention and anti-Israel writers will be mute or make excuses for this aberrant behavior.

While I do not condone any death penalty, I do not believe Israel is any position to cricise Hamas for carrying out these sentences considering their own extra-judicial activities.
