Hamas: Carter played key role in Shalit video deal

Top Hamas official says Israel requested former U.S. President's help in obtaining video of captive IDF soldier.

Senior Hamas official Mahmoud Zahar credited former U.S. president Jimmy Carter with a central role in brokering a deal between Israel and Hamas which saw 20 female Palestinian prisoners traded for a video of captive Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit , Channel 10 reported Saturday.

Speaking to the London-based Arabic language newspaper Al Quds al-Arabi, Zahar said that that it was Israel who asked the former U.S. president to take an active role in the negotiations between the sides.

Hours after receiving the video on Friday, the Shalit family approved the footage for release, arguing that they prefer to have control over its distribution, rather than the Hamas being able to do what they please with it.

Throughout his three years in captivity, contact with Gilad Shalit has been maintained through letters and video tapes: In September 2006, three months after his capture, Shalit's parents received the first letter from their son, which was recently published.

In June 2007, an audio tape was received in which Gilad Shalit was heard reading a statement written for him by his captors. In February 2008, another letter was delivered which did not include any further details on his situation.

In April 2008, a letter from his parents was delivered to Gilad Shalit, with the help of French President Nicolas Sarkozy. In June 2008, a third later from Gilad Shalit was delivered to Israel, also with Carter's help.

Carter's extraordinary (and unprecedented in history) accomplishment is getting 20 prisoners freed by Israel for a 2 minutes and 40 seconds video of a kidnapped soldier who was denied any visit by his family or the Red Cross for over three years, by a terrorist group. Sorry #2, the article says nothing about his release. By accepting such a deal, for the sake of Gilad and his family, Israel showed a superiority which is not in everybody's understanding.

The Jimmy Carter Centre like his protoge Obamas election campaign is funded by saudi petrodollars. If this video thats less than 2 minutes long in exchange for 20 terrorists is the best Jimmy the penut can achieve then I am not impressed. If he got a Red Cross visit then we would have something to thank him for but all this video does is confirm he is alive and the latest weapon of Hamas to try and get their lobby group in Israel ( the jews demanding pay any price for Shalit ). We need to get Gilad back but not at any price and the price Hamas is demanding is to high and we cannot allow public emotion to intefere with responsible government policy making. This is about alot more than Gilad Shalit. How about Jimmy talking Hamas into dropping their price ... oh yeh I forgot he wants Israel to accept Hamas demands as well.

(retry) A SMALL example of carter's CLOSE associations with arab MONEY : Harvard University REJECTED donation from the Zayed Foundation - which hosted speakers who called JEWS "the enemies of all nations" and stated that the HOLOCAUST was a "fable", etc. Carter pocketed his, NO questions asked. How many other ex-Presidents are on the payroll of the Saudi government and have the Saudi king review all his comments before release? How many other ex-Presidents call openly Antisemitic provocateurs like Jackson, Farakhan, and Ahmadinejad "close and special personal friends?" So...say a prayer for this man of hate and despotism who has NEVER met a dictator or Jew-hater he didn't like! http://jimmycartertruths.net/

Dr. Zahar credited Carter with brokering a deal. Is this the same comedian who during the Gaza war howled... 'Gaza will be a graveyard for Israelis' and 'victory is near'. The same far-off bird who wailed about being pressured into a deal for Shalit. But today, we are all to believe Carter, who has zero credibility with the Israeli leadership brokered a deal. Hmm.... what a miraculous turnaround of believability.

...then Carter is obviously trying to save his self-tarnished reputation. Twenty prisoners for a video? Who in Jerusalem agreed to that? When Schalit is returned unharmed, that will be a fair trade.

Any jerk could get a video for releasing 20 people and it seems like Carter did it. Hell I bet that he could get a video every week if Israel released 20 serving time for attempted murder. That would amount to over 3,000 freed since Shalit was kidnapped (and Hamas appears to only want 1,000 for Shalit).

...he is a truth teller. He told the truth about Israeli Apartheid, even did Israel a favor in delineating it, and still Israel wrongly spits in his face. Of course most who criticize it never read it, just like they won't or have not read the Goldstone Report. I am very proud of this man who has done so much good in the world. He is a tremendous example of selflessness. It's actually quite humorous when idiots denigrate Carter as at any given time, he is likely to be at some hot spot around the globe, working on dialog and fair elections. He certainly is not laying around a yacht. And that he has such a close working relationship with his wife is also a marvel and fine example. I am quite sure the vast majority of Carter critics have accomplished a fraction of what this man of peace has in his lifetime thus far.

Indeed many of us right wingers do revile Jimmy Carter and his most damaging post-presidential activities in the Middle East. Hammas, as is the case for Hizbolla, are a bunch of murderous thugs, who have broken just about every international human rights rule regarding prisoners of warfare that one could break. Carter, by engaging in dialogue with rouge states and terrorist organizations such as Hammas and Hezbolla has done a great deal of damage for the international community, because by using his high profile stature as an ex-President of the USA, he gives legitimacy to the organizations that he makes dialogue with. Low level diplomatic representation is the correct alternative. Carter has done a great deal of damage not only for Israel, but very much also for the USA.

Yes Esther this is the carter that americans find repulsive and all sane thinking people find dangerous and irrelevant ....yes Esther this is the man who brought the ayatollah back to Iran and could never do anything about the U.S. hostages that were held there. Yes Esther this is the man that was rejected for a second term as president of the U.S. because of his erratic policies that caused catastrophic inflation with interest rates of 21%. Yes Esther this is the Carter that should have stayed down on the peanut farm and kept his mouth shut. And yes Esther this is the man that won the Noble Peace Prize and was able to stand next to arafat and tutu one thankfully gone to hell and the other still running amok. Do I believe hamas about anything...the only thing I believe about hamas is that they are bent on destroying Israel.

President Carter did tremendous good work for Israel and Egypt in the late 1970s, and I can think of few others deserving a Nobel peace prize more than he. But I think he's badly lost his way - at least at times - since then. It makes me distinctly uncomfortable that a person who subtitled a book about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict 'Peace Not Apartheid' is influencing regional policy - at least if Hamas is to be believed. Still, if he is the chosen interlocutor of the two parties, who am I to argue - particularly since Mr Carter apparently has scored something of a minor success? Shana Tova, a very happy 5770 to you. I find it near impossible to believe that Israel asked Carter to intervene on its behalf. More interesting, why is Hamas trying to rehabilitate Carter's reputation? With the millions Carter has accepted, personally and for his 'centre', from some of the most virulent anti-Semites on the planet, he has long lost any credibility when it comes to Israeli-Arab affairs. Carter has shown courage, but an unfortunate one sided approach to the arab israeli conflict. It has been pointed out that the major funder of his organization is a wealthy Arab. Where was Jimmy Carter for the eight years rockets were coming out of Gaza raining down on israeli civilian areas indescriminately? Jimmy, you are letting yourself be used by one party instead of being a fair and honest broker. Too bad. You blew it, and your prestige too.

The same Carter who was vilified and condemned by the Israeli government and major Jewish leaders is the one who was able to advance the process for the release of Shalit.Carter was the only US president who achieved a significant peace treaty for Israel. His opinions and peace making role should be praised and commended.
