Hamas bans Gaza TV program, angering journalists' union
Hamas minister in Gaza: Political affairs show banned as it 'ignored the government in Gaza to which it must report.'
By ReutersHamas has ordered a Gaza television station to take a political affairs show off the air, a move the Palestinian journalists' union Thursday called an attempt by the Islamist group to suppress freedom of the press.
The weekly "Red Line" is broadcast by Palestine Television, which moved to alternate studios in Gaza after Hamas seized its main facility after taking over the Strip six weeks ago.
Hamas took control in Gaza after days of violent clashes with security forces allied to Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement.
Hassan Abu Hasheesh, deputy minister of information in a Hamas-led government in Gaza, said the decision to ban the program was not related to its content.
Abu Hasheesh said broadcasts of "Red Line," hosted by an unaffiliated political commentator, would not be allowed because Palestine Television "ignored the government in Gaza to which it must report", a reference to the station's refusal to recognize Hamas's authority.
After the ban was issued, Palestine Television did not broadcast the program during its regular slot Wednesday.
Tawfiq Abu Khoussa, a Fatah member who chairs the Palestinian Journalists' Syndicate, said "the actions of the de facto authority in Gaza" represented "suppression of press and media freedoms."
Gaza-based human rights groups have accused Hamas fighters of a string of arrests of Fatah activists and alleged informants for Israel since taking over the territory.
Hamas has said arrests were not politically motivated but aimed at putting common criminals and "collaborators" with Israel behind bars.
The Palestinian Center for Human Rights said members of Hamas' armed wing Iz a-Din al-Qassam assaulted one of its lawyers two days ago.

Haven't you guys heard of the concept of "House Cleaning" ? I will never defend Hamas or anyone who supports war and death... But, Hamas leaders are visionaries. Most of us oppose their psycho sick agendas and killings.. but regardless of what others think about Hamas, Hamas has a plan and a mission in Gaza. They have to clean Gaza out according to their plan. And that will include what you have seen and heard happening in Gaza so far. It does not make what they do right or justified ofcourse, but in order for them to clean up the mess they have to go to extreme measures. Again, I am not finding excuses for such an un-Godly death squad. But I do understand why they are doing what they are doing at least. Now, let's take the Iraq problem as an example, if the US and UK troops pulled out, there will be chaos everywhere, correct? Then, one has to go there and do a lot of House Cleaning according to one's plans and mission. That cleaning will include many unspeakable actions too.
If Hamas is going to pull out the "we were chosen in a democratic election" card out then they better start treating its citizens as though they where living in a democratic state. Banning a telivision station that has alternate political views shows Hamas' contradiction and hypocrisy.
Why is he not going back to report from Gaza? Does he have no faith in his friends from Hamas, his rescuers? Why, just the other day, reporters were strolling through the peaceful streets of Gaza, seeing the tranquility that Hamas has brought to the Palestinian people! (This just in--more violence as Hamas decides now that everyone from Islamic Jihad is also corrupt and are traitors, and must be dealt with in an appropriate manner).
There are certain Talkbacks on which you will never see a single Israel-basher, and this is one of them. No Clickfool. No Labhras. No Natalie Durson. No Micjael of UK. No Marilyn. No Maureen Ann. No Dutch (ehere's she been lately, anyway). No Indrajaya. No Lakhshmi. No Ben Alofs. The list goes on and on. I wonder why. (No question mark intended)
The new definition of calm in Gaza. Are those journalists still on tour?
This is good news also for Tosefta, Hannah (the original one), Indrajaya, and all their friends.
...there are two truths that need to be said: 1- It's not like Fateh is any better, and is in fact guilty of more attempts (note: attempts) at silencing critics than Hamas, and 2- Neither Fateh or Hamas can compare to the brutal suppression of free thinking we suffered during the years of Israeli occupation. In fact, Palestinians who wrote articles, poems, or gave speeches for freedom in the 70s, 80s, and 90s in Palestine often found a fate in Israeli prisons comparable to what the Syrian and Jordanian regimes typically do. Back then, we weren't even allowed to have our own TV stations! You people on this forum better remember that before you go Palestine-bashing... Once can also see why we normally scoff at claims of Israel being the "only democracy" in the middle east..
slowly, freedom of press and the people will be taken away. ah yes, let's waive the green Hamas flag high! be proud, Gazans!
I wonder how long it will be before Gaza residents have the courage to admit to the truth that they were far better off with the Israelis?
See the rat Farfour surrounded by 72 virgin rats. See Farfour the rat eat all the cheese he never had while in Gaza. See Farfour stick pins in Jewish dolls while his 72 virgin rats applaud. See and hear Farfour read the news. Once you see this program you'll never miss the fatah US dominated Zionist lackey show we just took off the air.
Censorship and suppression of individual liberties is the result of unchecked religious radicalism so encouraged by today's version of burkhist Beatrice Webbs enabled by Haaretz current forum policies.
Hamas get their guide lines from Syria and Iran so what you expect, if you talk you are in jail like in Rissia's Stalin time.So now they will make all tv and radio to transmit what they want, news papers write the way they think and so on so on. What a good life whawww. I think their Hate Driven minds can do anything these days, but remember hate is panishable by Allah.!!
Arrests of "collaborators" not "politically motivated" !! As if the definition of "collaborator" is not political! But of course, it is. Hamas are betting that a substantial percentage of the people who will hear of read their lies are too ignorant or unaware to figure this out. How many posters here will do their best to prove Hamas right on this point?
Anyone who: wants peace with Israel more than an eternal fight for it's destruction; supports the freedoms of speech, press, and/or religion; wants to prosecute cases of honor killing; wants to work in Israel; supports secular democracy instead of sharia law; mentions (like Farag Foda did) that three out of four of the first Caliphs were murdered by other Muslims in the 600s; thinks Hamas should be limited by due process and not just kill whomever some Hamas member calls a 'collaborator'; criticizes Hamas for anything.
The thin endge of the wedge is in. So, in the last month we have: 1) Murder of political opposition 2) Media censorship 3) indoctrination of young children at "camp" 4) introduction of religious "moral" police 5) harassment of secular citizens Now this really is shaping up to be an enviable sort of freedom. If they keep it up they may earn themselves a spot on the UNHRC, and get immunity from prosecution. Isnt it wonderful Lakshmi?
they will take Farfur reruns off the air, again.
"Abu Hasheesh said broadcasts of "Red Line", would not be allowed because Palestine Television ignored the government in Gaza to which it must report". Since when must the media automatically report to the government, even if it's just a so-called "government"?! Only in Hamas-land.....
What else cab be expected from Hamas the "moderates"?
Whats next, burning books in a convection oven as to not pollute the atmosphere? I guess the Keystone Cops have too much to do that rewiting their hate-filled Charter will just have to take a back burner for a bit. But dont forget they really and truly are chaging their whole outlook, now it includes everyone who doesnt agree with their nightmare Fahreheit 451 vision, not just Israelis.
