Hamas bans Gaza motorcyclists from giving women rides

Move is latest in Islamist organization's virtue campaign in Gaza; Offenders reportedly beaten, arrested.

The Hamas government has banned motorcycle riders from carrying women on the back seat - the latest in the militants' virtue campaign in Gaza.

The ban was posted on Hamas Interior Ministry Website on Tuesday.

According to the Website, the ban seeks to preserve citizen safety and the stability of Palestinian society's customs and traditions.

Hamas wants to impose a strict interpretation of Islam. Its other efforts have included breaking up mixed couples on the beach and obliging female lawyers to wear headscarves in court.

The group insists compliance with the campaign is voluntary and reflects Gaza's conservative ways, but reports have surfaced of offenders being beaten or arrested.

Gaza women almost never drive motorcycles, and rarely even ride behind men.

Intersting but disjointed meaning in reference to your usage. You seem to know very little about the first part of the term and embody the latter. Typical.

All politically correct Hamas sympathizers in the West are also sympathizing with Hamas' Islamic policy of keeping the Arab male boot on the neck of pathetic Islamic women. Even sympathizers of the PA "the moderates" are guilty of sympathizing with male chauvinism and female servitude, typical of Islamic societies. If you really believed in equality of sexes, you'd back an extension of Israeli occupation into the whole Middle East. Where's your morality?

to turn our country into an islamic hell. AKP, the ruling Turkish islamic party, if they hear from this example, would do anything to implement it here as well. Yet US and the jewish lobby seems to have no problem with Erdogan as long as he executes all their economic orders (which he perfectly does) here. This is Afghanistan rerun. Remember how US helped mujahadeen ?

    More overt control of women

The respected head of Cairo's Al Azhar uni. declared this week that the full veil for women is un-Islamic. Presumably Hamas disagrees violently with this famous teacher. Nothing to do with respect for women or traditional values, but more close control. Can it be that the Gazan women are becoming more outspoken about the miserable lives they see their children condemned to under Hamas rule! Of course if Hamas really is serious about tradition they can ban all the wicked Western invented motorcyles and cars from Gaza and go back to riding donkeys.

Hardly a move toward a progressive society, but I guess if Israel has Tel Aviv along with B'nai Brak and Beit Shemesh, Palestine can have Gaza and Ramallah.

Madness, complete madness. And this is what they want to impose on Israel too. This is the sickness at the heart of the conflict.
