A 24-year-old Haifa man was arrested on Saturday on suspicion that he had raped a Canadian woman volunteering at a nearby kibbutz some six weeks ago.
The man was detained after the 20-year-old volunteer recognized him at a nightclub, the same club where the alleged rape took place, and immediately filed a complaint with the Afula police.
The complainant told the police that she had gone out to the Terminal nightclub in Ramot Menashe, the kibbutz where she volunteers, several days after her arrival in Israel. She said that she had met the suspect during the evening and accompanied him to the parking lot, where she said he raped her.
The Afula police department arrested the suspect following the woman's complaint and he was brought before the Nazareth Magistrate's Court for extension of his remand. The police are investigating the version of the events as told by both the complainant and the suspect.
