Haifa court orders rapist to pay victims NIS 2m in damages
The 37-year-old man had already been convicted of raping his two victims, both nieces of his.
The Haifa District Court on Sunday ordered a man convicted of raping two of his nieces to pay his victims NIS 2 million in damages.
The man, a 37-year-old resident of the north, had already been convicted and sentenced to 10 years prison with an extra two years suspended in a separate criminal trial.
He was convicted of a long list of sexual offences. Over a period of 11 years he raped and sexually assaulted the two girls, beginning when he was 15 years old and they were just eight and six respectively.
According to the charges, the man would lock one his nieces individually in his room and rape and sexually assault them during visits to their grandfather's house, where he lived.
Judge Ron Sokol, who presided over the civil hearing at which the damages were awarded Sunday, said that sexual offences committed against young girls are an infringement of their basic right to respect and to protection of their body and their soul.
"A young girl that is the victim of sex crimes? carries the pain in her body and her soul her entire life. The memory of the events that she experienced will never leave her," Sokol said.
