Haifa court convicts man of raping, imprisoning prostitute
Raphael Yochayev, 41, attacked Ukrainian woman who tried to escape through window but fell to ground.
The Haifa District Court convicted a 41-year-old man of raping and imprisoning a prostitute he had invited to his house.
The court heard that Raphael Yochayev, of Haifa, invited the 24-year-old Ukrainian citizen to his apartment. As soon as she came in, he hit her on the head with an axe, causing her to bleed.
Later on, the court also heard, he raped her several times and refused to let her leave. The victim, who feared for her life, tried to escape through the third floor window, but lost her grip and fell to the ground.
The defendant, who heard her shouts, telephoned Magen David Adom emergency services and said that the woman, who was seriously wounded, tried to commit suicide.
Only after she regained consciousness, several days later, and shared with police her version of the events, he became a suspect.
Judges Ilan Schiff, Hani Horowitz and Tsila Keinan rejected his claims that he had known the victim before the event, and that he had no intention of harming her.
