Haaretz probe: Dubai assassins' passport photos were doctored

Haaretz probe finds Dubai assassins' passport photos were doctored, distorting identification.

By Liel Kyzer, Avi Issacharoff, News Agencies and Danna Harman Tags: Israel Mossad Hamas Israel news

The passport photographs of the agents who assassinated Mahmoud al-Mabhouh in Dubai were doctored so the agents would not be identified, a Haaretz probe discovered Friday.

The discovery casts doubt on claims that the espionage agency that carried out last month's hit on the senior Hamas operative committed grave errors.

Various features of the people in the photographs, such as eye color or the line of a lip, were changed - slightly enough so as not arouse suspicion at passport control, but still enough that the real agent could not be recognized.

Photos: AP and Reuters

According to the Dubai police, only a few of the agents were caught on security cameras without their disguises. However, it had been assumed until now that publication of the photos of the 26 agents had blown their cover. Now it appears that the Dubai police still do not have viable information about their real appearance.

Mabhouh was known for his disguises and for using various passports to run weapons into the Gaza Strip, according to an associate who lived in Gaza and later spent two years abroad with Mabhouh. The associate told Reuters on Thursday that Mabhouh had several passports, all from Arab countries, and had even undergone plastic surgery recently to narrow his nose.

The associate also said that Mabhouh never revealed his plans to anyone, not even his wife. He said Mabhouh always ordered his plane tickets by himself, over the web or through a travel agent, and had not visited Iran in the past three years.

Mabhouh's brother Fayek also told Haaretz that Mabhouh was very cautious, and on his last trip, he did not even tell his family where he was going. But a senior Hamas leader has intimated that Mabhouh was not careful enough. Fayek said his brother flew to Dubai on a Palestinian passport, but under an assumed name.

Mabhouh's killing has led to a wave of recriminations between Fatah and Hamas and between Hamas and Israel. According to the Dubai police, a senior Hamas official gave Israel information about Mabhouh's flight. Some in Hamas have also criticized the fact that Mabhouh was not guarded.

Meanwhile, the newspaper The Australian reported on Thursday that Australian authorities had previously warned Israeli intelligence not to use doctored Australian passports in its clandestine activities around the world.

The Australian foreign minister at the time, Alexander Downer, confirmed to The Australian that his government had warned Israel on at least one occasion not to issue fake Australian passports to its intelligence operatives. And a diplomatic official in Canberra told The Australian that back in the 1990s, Australia also sought assurances from Israel that it would not misuse Australian passports.

On Wednesday, the Dubai police announced that they had identified 15 more people suspected of involvement in Mabhouh's killing, of whom three used forged Australian passports. Haaretz found that at least 10 of the 15 new suspects were carrying passports with the names of Israeli citizens who are also citizens of another country.

In response to the report from Dubai on the forged Australian passports, Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith held a clarification meeting Thursday morning with Israel's ambassador to Canberra, Yuval Rotem. Smith said the Australian government condemned the use of Australian passports. He also informed Rotem that the Australian federal police had opened an investigation and that he expected Israel's full and transparent cooperation.

At this point, Smith added, there is no evidence that the three Australians whose names were used on the passports, Adam Marcus Korman, Joshua Daniel Bruce and Nicole Sandra McCabe, were implicated in the affair in any way.

I still think Hamas or the PA threw this terrorist a retirement party but if Mossad did do the operation we can be assured that no European country will expose the real assassins. Mabhouh's body showed signs of electrocution, an effective torture method, so if Mossad debriefed him all the passport issuing countries will secretly be rubbing their hands together in anticipation of what was learned while feeding the press their 'grave' concerns about passport fraud.

A correction to my earlier posting. It was not just the written press in Australia but also the TV that prominently featured Israel's use of forged foreign passports. Sky News, the Rupert Murdoch owned TV channel, gave as much time, if not more, to this story of forgery and the reaction of the Australian government, than it did to the winning of the gold medal in the Olympics by Australian Lydia Lassila. And it should be noted that Murdoch is a strong supporter of Israel. If is channels are reporting the displeasure with Israel it is not hard to imagine what less friendly venues are saying. Australia is not pleased with Israel. The Israeli ambassador was called in. Perhaps Australia should recall its ambassador from Israel and stop supporting a country that obviously holds it in contempt - as the Australian foreign minister so accurately noted - every half an hour on Sky News.

Syria made clear to Australia that Australia must support the OIC-Arab League interests against Israel , if Australia want the OIC-Arab League support for Australia bid for a seat in the 10 non permanent UNSC members . Google such Australia bid and read what that Australia news website reported . "The Dubai hit could have been sponsored by terror Fatah as a vengeance against terror Hamas ." It is often argued here that Mossad could not have done the murder because Mossad is so competent that they would never leave anyone suspicious that they might have done something. Since they never ever leave any evidence, the only reason to suspect them is antisemitism. By the same reasoning, palestinians could not do it because they are always incompetent and never accomplish anything without blowing themselves up. Similarly, the Fatah guys who were detained in Dubai could not have been part of an Israeli-Fatah joint operation. Because if they were, the Israeli agents would have either gotten the Fatah guys out of the country or killed them to keep them from talking. Instead they were just clueless Fatah guys who had no idea that they might get blamed for something, who maybe didn't even hear about the murder until after they were captured.

Yesterday the front page of the Sydney Australia Telegraph featured a large article with photo of the young woman whose passport had been used by Israel. As might be expected this young woman and her family are less than pleased that her identity was stolen. She and the other two Australians whose identities were used for other than legal purposes are now afraid. I just returned from Sydney where not only the newspapers but the press featured this latest Mossad action and noticed that this was certainly not the first time that Israel has used forged passports. As the Australian foreign minister said, this shows that Israel is showing contempt for other countries. I can't agree more.

The Bible say that Moses sent 12 folks to gather specific info , they didn't kill . Mossad name is Mordechai and his secret operative is Hadass better known under the code name of Esther . They both collected info so the king could consider and decide about the actions of Haman the agathite. Haman first job was a street caller same as the Dubai khalfan obscurantism revealing his incompetence to the recording Medias . Joshua also sent folks to gather info about Jericho . What is 'nice' about that bible episode is that those folks met a woman. From there the 'red lite street' notion and the James Bond movies with his special drink and cool chiks. Most spies today seat behind a window, drink two days old coca-cola and keep records like any public clerk . Happy Purim .

"I have to wonder whether `heckuvajob Brownie` is running Mossad these days because the idiocy and incompetence of this operation reminds me of FEMA during and after Katrina." If they say what the risks are and the boss says do it anyway, then they do it. They got it done on short notice with the materials they had on hand and nobody on their side got killed or captured. Imagine the conversation between the top Mossad guy and the political guy who gives them their orders. "We can do this and probably get all our people out, but we'll leave evidence behind. Give us a month and we can set it up better." "Would this evidence actually matter?" "Hard to say. We probably wouldn't have to retire any agents. But it might have diplomatic consequences." "OK. You take care of the agent stuff and I'll deal with the diplomatic stuff. The operation is on." No matter how competent they are they have to do what the political guys tell them to, to the best of their abilities.

as a vengeance against terror Hamas . The medias exposure has all the hallmark print of terror Fatah operations such as the hijacking of civil airliners and the assassinations of the Israeli Munich athletes . To justify its existence and funds, Terror fatah like such operations and medias exposure . We know that terror PLO-PA is behind most of the demonisation and delegitimation process against Israel . Hence the terror fatah use of Israeli names to frame Israel and direct the spotlite and investigation away from Fatah .

In reading the ever larger lists of "agents" being uncovered by Dubai its starting to look like a cover up by Dubai itself. Who needs 26 agents to take out one assassin in his hotel room? That's more than the number that participated in Entebe against a well guarded airport. I think Dubai is putting on a smoke screen on behalf of someone it fears a very great deal. Who that is is anyone's guess, but for sure it isn't Israel. That could be Syria, Iran, Hammas, Hezb Allah or the PA, one or all of them whacked him with Dubai's participation. Most of the "agents" in the photos look like Arabs. Many Israelis are fair complexioned, which enabled their parents to escape extermination by the EU in WW II. any intelligence service from Syria, Iran, Egypt, Jordan, Lybia or PA could have doctored the passports using travel records from Europe airlines and airports let alone via cooperation with the EU foreign services. Faking passports to implicate the Mossad was merely icing on the cake.

Of all the papers in the world, who would have an inside look into the operation but an Israeli paper? What is the likelihood for this? Of course, what we are seeing here is the Mossad releasing some secret "news" to trusting friends. Obviously, Mossad must be very concerned that the enormous number of agents exposed in the trivial Dubai "kill" will bring about some serious investigation into its operations, with heads rolling as a result, as Haaretz editorial is expecting. So the people who know the details begin leaking to the press. Is it true that Mossad doctored the pictures of the agents? May be, or may be not. Personally, I doubt it because such a detail did not show up in V. Ostrovsky's book which was full of details. Mossad has a special division for psychological warfare and disinformation. They are now in full battle gear and working overtime to protect their own sorry behinds. We need some real investigation into this affair.

How many Mossad agents does it take to change a light bulb? Apparently, if the light bulb is in Dubai, it takes a couple dozen or so. And by the way, the same computer software used to create modified photos on the passports can also be used, particularly with the nitwits who smiled for the cameras, to reconstruct close facimiles to their real appearances. Sure hope this terrorist was worth burning quite a few operatives, and wrecking the lives of all the private citizens whose identities were stolen. Not to mention further antagonizing the countries whose passports were forged. I have to wonder whether 'heckuvajob Brownie' is running Mossad these days because the idiocy and incompetence of this operation reminds me of FEMA during and after Katrina.

CCTV Cameras, dome cameras, bullet cameras, infrared cameras, PTZ cameras, Wireless and Network cameras are all fuzzy at best. Much better suited for getting recognition of types of clothing worn, hair styles, glasses-no glasses, etc. but they're not intended for facial recognition, hence the cheap price and low resolutions. Even the oil-rich Dubai government and the wealthy hoteliers won't spend a nickel more than they have to on security cameras because rarely will a criminal get up on a ladder and pose for the camera in the ceiling.

The Australians are blowing up the claims of identity theft by the Australian/Israelis. Apparently Mossad would send these people back to Australia to change their names to more anglo sounding names. That means that no one will believe the claims of identity theft by those whose passports were used. Therefore those claiming identity theft will always be suspected of being Mossad agents and may in fact get busted by their home countries for it.

Folks, how do you think internet sites targets you with particular adds? Data Mining. Your MAC address and the IP address allow them to track what sites you visit, what stories you read and provide ads most likely to conform to those responses. Most of you have huge data footprints you don't even imagine. There are folks tracking what you buy, what food you eat, where you shop and how much you spend . . . and they are using the data for commercial purposes. Walk around London and you are constantly being recorded and there is software that can quickly search for your image and locate you. . . Ditto Dubai. Ever check out the tracking cookies on your computer? "Tracking Cookies"? Know who is doing port scans on your computer? Why were so many agents needed to take out 1 man? Well, as stated by previous commentators, the agents who were watching needed to be watched in case they were being watched OR new recruits were able to use this as a training mission, which if you think about it seems logical as they need to clock up some hours don't they? The bottom line is YES, it DOES only take one agent to kill the target but that is the EASIEST part!

"Various features of the people in the photographs, such as eye color or the line of a lip, were changed - slightly enough so as not arouse suspicion at passport control, but still enough that the real agent could not be recognized. " - Haaretz Nice try, but there are plenty of non-doctored photos of the persons involved in the possession of the Dubai police, and the intelligence agencies of the world. Large scale CCTV coverage has changed the game in many nations. So has the speed with which databases can be searched and mined. In the end the search for 'suspects' came down to looking for phony passports and tracking the images back to the CCTV coverage. The sort of thing that leaves James Bond, shaken, but not stirred. Folks are grasping at little quibbles to have a reason to deny what Israel isn't. It seems even most Israeli's are questioning who hit whom and why. Just the usual wink, nod and grin. The only thing that was wrong was getting caught and the agency involved actually went to an huge effort to avoid being detected by the CCTV which observed the public spaces which had to be used. Using a large number of people most of whom were only exposed intermittently and not always together might have worked had the Dubai authorities been less capable and their software older. Also the nations who's passports were forged actively cooperated in supplying the evidence of fraud. Technology overwhelmed a cocky Mossad. Instead of confusing the system it ended up providing a large block of consistent data which impeached it. You live, you learn, it isn't Mossad's first bungle. It might be wise to start thinking first and acting more prudently, but Bibi isn't capable of that.

Haaretz editors. I changed my comment a bit. My theory is as good as some of the other's I've read. It is surprising to me that you would publish some of the other comments, as caustic as they are, and not mine. Perhaps you might reconsider? The Dubai Police Chief is obsessed with finding out "who done it." Well, that's easy to prove. The events which led to Mr. M's premature death were primarily coordinated by himself, His friends are outraged and embarrassed, and perhaps a bit peeved at Mr. M's sloppy work in Dubai. Of course, they will blame others. They will manipulate the facts. They will implicate others. After all, Mr. M's carelessness has humiliated them greatly and implies some rethinking of their own clandestine activities. I am sure that if Mr. M could share with us a posthumous comment, It would be, "Oops." His premature departure is the direct result of his own actions for which he should be held accountable.

Therefore apparently the photographs have been doctored so you will never be able to positively Identify the real owners of the face on the fake passports. I wonder if the people traced in Dubai have been identified at the places they fled to where they changed their passports and flew on to Israel. Face recognition technology is a wonderful thing. Surprised Mossad has never heard of it. (Hopefully this one will get pass the military censor)

You face an evidentiary shortfall, PETER: 1) Those "aussies" entered Iran 2) Those "aussies" immediately boarded a flight out of Iran. Ergo, Iran has not the slightest problem with "aussies" transitting through their country REGARDLESS of the policies of the Australian govt. Why, exactly, should they? PSM:"Where Australia supports boycott of Iran?" What has that got to do with limiting the movement of individual Australians, PETER? If Rudd did a double-backflip tomorrow and supported a trade boycott of Israel would that affect the ability of Aussie tourists to transit through Israel? Why should it, PETER?

You clearly are misinformed on the matter. The names on the passports are mainly of dual citizens that live in Israel, but their genuine pictures were no used. The passports had altered pictures of the perpetrators instead, but with the names of the dual citizens. The passports were fake with the exception of the German Passport which was issued in Hamburg to a man claiming to be of German-Jewish ancestry.

I also found it strange at the beginning that 26 people would have been involved, but European experts interviewed in newspapers say that it's not surprising since this operation was carried out in an Arab country, where risks for Mossad agents would be much higher than in a Western country. This ain't the guy in the photo!?!?!". Ahem. Right now there are 26 people listed as suspects; passports from half a dozen countries; and tales of trips all over the world. It only took one person to kill Mahmoud al-Mabhouh and he or she isn't any of the people in this article and isn't listed anywhere else. All these people will be cleared as all they did was stay in a hotel or fly in and out of Dubai. Meanwhile the assassin went in did the job and came out, and nobody is looking for him or her. Whether Israel was involved or not we'll probably never know, but we do know that there's a whole lot of empty speculation right now.
