Group urges Olmert to ask U.S. for Jonathan Pollard's release
Group says Bush would accede to new request to free the convicted spy as gesture to new Israeli gov't.
By Nadav Shragai and Haaretz CorrespondentA committee working for the release of convicted spy Jonathan Pollard asked Prime Minister-designate Ehud Olmert and the leaders of other Kneset parties on Wednesday to submit an additional formal request asking the United States government to grant Pollard clemency.
The Committee to Free Jonathan Pollard, with the cooperation of Pollard's wife Esther, has told Olmert that a source close to Bush told them that if Israel submits another request, it will be accepted under humanitarian considerations and as a gesture to the new Israeli government.
Pollard has been in an American jail for 21 years for spying for Israel while serving as a U.S. Navy intelligence analyst.
The committee issued a letter on Wednesday, the eve of the Passover holiday, written by Pollard a few days ago. In the letter, he again calls on the Israeli public to act on behalf of his release.
Pollard also blasts his former recruiter and handler, incoming Knesset member Rafi Eitan, the chairman of the Pensioner's Party. Pollard blames Eitan, who was then head of a covert department dedicated to scientific and technological espionage, for his capture.
Pollard's letter, however, is mostly an account of his weakening health, due to high blood pressure, diabetes, chronic arthritis, symptoms of glaucoma, and problems with his gall bladder and sinuses.
He notes that he lacks the basic necessities to hold a Passover seder, like matzah and wine. He also describes his severe loneliness and concern for his wife, who lives in Jerusalem and works tirelessly for his release, despite what he calls the Israeli government's lack of support.
The committee called on the Israeli public to leave a chair empty for Pollard during the Passover Seder, and to read his letter out loud.

the fact that this traitor is still alice as opposed to being electrocuted for his treachery is testament to the fact that the us is run by jewish neo cons and lobbyst.why should the us free a man who betrayed his country at a period of sensitivities known as the cold war ?especially when isreal was already transferring us intelligence to russia in exchange for migrants ? he deserves to be executed and being jewsish is no exscuse.no one has the right to steal national intelligence from any country ad transfer to another and when caught u should be ready to pay the price.
One is either doing things in the best interest of the U.S. national security or they are not. He ostensibly had a choice and choose to break the law. I rather suspect he is right where he needs to be.
It is interesting that you compare Pollard to the Rosenbergs, since the Rosenbergs knowingly, willingly, and with malice aforethought gave sensitive information to a potential enemy of the US. Don't you consider that a bad thing for a US citizen to do? As to letting Polish Jews die, if ending the war as soon as possible meant thousand fewer Americans would die, what is your problem with that (assuming you are an American)?
The answer to your question is: Yes, if England sold information given to it to an enemy of the US, anyone giving them information would wind up in jail.
What evidence do you have for your statement that Pollard did not put the USA at risk? My information is that Israel sold the USSR information Pollard gave it- didn't that cause harm?
Whaat possible difference does a criminal's motivation make? The significant fact is that Pollard committed the crime of which he was charged.
First, the only valid criterion for an American is whether the disclosure of information to an actual or potential enemy of the US is in the national interest of the US. How it affects the party of the second part is a very secondary consideration (to an American). If Israel's interests are more important, there was an interesting phrase used for Pollard - an Israeli with an American passport. Second, if it is true (as it was in the incidence of Pollard) that Jewish people consider Israel's interests more important than those of the US, why shouldn't giving such people access to sensitive data be reconsidered?
20 Million Evangelical Christians support Israel more than American Jews. American Jews are just as afraid as they were in the days of the Rosenbergs and during the Roosevelt administration while they stood by and let almost the entire population of Poland's Jews die. Well the difference between Judaism and Christianity is that the blood of Jesus Christ was shed for the sins of the world. That includes the sins of Pollard. He wasn't a big traitor! He was a little traitor and he did it for the money! 20 years is enough! Let him out! Selah!
Here is part of the quote... "Jonathan Pollard was doing what any good Jew would have done, he sided with his people's interests first".
Just a few weeks ago, In this paper I read an article and in the feedback a man from Pennsylvania said, "POLLARD was only doing what a good Jew would do". hmmmm Jim
Although Pollard believed he was doing the right thing, the real damage was done to the American Jews and the distrust it caused with the American public. With the Aipac scandal still fresh in mind, it is unlikely that he would walk free.
"I do not understand these American "Patriots" who want to see Pollard "rot" in prison. All he did was share information The USA had basically promised to pass on to Israel, but did not. Pollard was perhaps a wee bit overzealous. He felt that there were factions within the government of The US which were, to put it mildly, not sympathetic to Israel`s survival and would deny Israel crucial information." You're kidding, right? He stole information that was not his to divulge. He is not the arbitor for who receives information when. He is a traitor, who secretly took information and SOLD it to the Israelis. He wasn't doing it for love of Israel, he was doing it for money. And so what if there are factions who are not sympathetic to Israel's survival? I know a lot of Israelis have the "we deserve this" mentality, but stealing sensitive gov't information from an ally seems a little too much. And Pollard needs to pay the piper. They used to shoot traitors. He got off lucky.
Pollard causes difficulty for American Jews. He was an intelligence analyst who knew better, and was trusted with the highest secrets involving USA national security. By giving them up, he also tipped the hand of the intelligence methods the USA uses. If he wanted to work for the Israelis, he should have quit and made aliyah. If he felt what he did was right in his heart, then he should willingly accept his punishment. Israelis should even bring this up to the USA. He isn't worth saving and will only cause big problems. Sorry if this sounds harsh, but it is true.
A. Pollard who sold information for money that wiped out the PLO in Tunisia. B. Big time politicians who will remain unnamed who lobbied for the USA to sell our ports to one of the Arab countries that sent suicide bombers and money for the September 11th attack. Selah!
I guess the main point for releasing Pollard is that his actions did not hurt the US and were not intended to hurt the US. In fact he can claim his actions made the US position stronger. Although transferring classified information is a crime in the US, there should be a distinction between spying for an enemy and spying for an ally. Would James Bond be put in prison for spying for Britain?
Question: To which of the following to you ascribe? You may choose more than one. A. Admiration for the PLO. B. Admiration for David Duke. C. Poster on the Stormfront Blog. D. Distrust of Israel. E. Dislike of Jews. Pollard himself did not put the USA at risk. Israel abandoned him and any damage that occured was the fault of the Israeli Government, not Pollard. He has paid for the crime already. 20 years is enough. So if you would just apply to yourself any of the above, I would have a better picture of who I am dealing with. Tanks A Lot. Selah!
You must be joking. Pollard is a man who has caused immense trouble for all American Jews. By his treachery he has made it possible for anti-semites to argue that perfectly decent Jews cannot be trusted in positions of power and responsibility because of a potential conflict of loyalties. Pollard and the men involved in the AIPAC scandal are to be reviled by American Jews, not admired.
Not only Pollard (tsss spying on a country without Israel wouldn't exist anymore) There is also another jew in custody, although he did his time... In the heart of the only "democracy" in the Mideast (??)... Vanunu ! Jailed for years for telling the truth.. And that is something you just don't do in Israel.. At least Sharon never did, glad their is something as heavenly justice... Israel became from a country to admire a land of horror and injustice if your not of the right race.
I don't know if Pollard deserved his long sentence or not. I do know it's is own fault. He certainly committed the crime (He plead guilty) and broke his oath as a keeper of US government secrets. It was not his job to determine who gets what information. In any case if he hadn't mouthed off during and after his sentencing and if he had showed a little remorse for his actions I'm sure he would have been released by now. You can compare relative sentences if you like; however I don't think you will find any cases where the accused displayed such a defiant attitude after being caught. This is why he got life and this is why he is not being paroled. At this point he has damaged his own image enough that it would be hard to believe him if he did start to show some remorse for his crimes. But I hope they just let him go we can be done with this matter.
Pollard sold information to Israel for money and betrayed his own country, endangering his own countrymen for money. Let this traitor rot in jail together with all the other traitors. There is nothing worse than betraying your own.
what an insult to mandella. pollard isn't worthy of wiping mandella's butt.
2 questions, 1 did his actions put at risk the safety or security of the people of the USA?, 2 did he act out of conscience or for personal gain? If the answers are that his actions did not endanger the safety of the people of the USA and he acted out of conscience, bearing in mind his medical condition, surely there are humanitarian grounds for his release? Whatever happened to the quality of mercy? I know that in the past the U.K. has dealt severly with spies and traitors, e.g. William Joyce (Lord Haw Haw), but I would hope that irrespective of what we have done in the past the U.K. would look at a case like this with a sympathetic eye. May I take this opportunity to wish everyone no matter what their nationality, religious beliefs or ethnic origins are a Happy and Peaceful Easter.
Traitors should rot in jail.
President Bush set him free and let him go to Israel! Selah!
Pollard is doing time for his crime. Same as any other criminal. I worked in the same area as Jay at the time of his arrest. He needs to stay where he is.
So if he was to be released from jail I would expect him to be stripped of his US citizenship. No country can accept dual loyalties. Pollard should be treated in the same manner as an Israeli Arab who is working for Hamas (or perhaps not - that would mean he gets killed doesn't it?)
When Israel stops violating human rights and releases it's Palestinian political prisoners. Otherwise let Pollard, the spy of Israel, stealing from its ally, rot in prison.
How is it that you get off thinking that the US has anything against Israel? Is it not the US who funds you unquestionably, stands up for you against UN Resolutions, and even allows you to make a mockery of its generocity to you... (ex. liberty) and here you are saying things like this is anti-semitism or relating it to Nazism? Saying this isn't that bad of a crime? If anything this is the first case I have seen of Americans being firm with Israel. And for the guy who said "we will not let America be run by Jews... newsflash, it is!" Any other traitor to America, as Pollard the spy is, would get much a much harsher sentence. So why should Pollard be treated special? Because He's Jewish? Because He's Israeli? He's a spy, he deserves to serve life in the country that he betrayed. If Bush grants clemency on a traitor to the United States of America then he's even stupider than I thought.
Poor Pollard only wanted to pass info that was "supposed" to be passed to Israel, but then somebody, somehow stopped it...!!! Pablo wants to condemn those who stopped the passage. Sure they are anti-semites, Israel haters stupid "american patriots" that he can not understand why they did so. Did it ever occur to Pablo and others who live in the USA as americans, but still wonder why are there "american patriots" rather than Israeli spies, that they ultimately only harm the american jewish comunity. May I ask, why Israel was free to abduct and jail Israeli Vanono, while USA should not jail a USA citizen, in Pablo's logic..???
"All he did was share information " LOL! I've got news for you, Pablo. That's all spies ever do.
Please, Please, Please; Not ALL Jews are Zionists and not ALL Zionists are Jews. Pollard is a Zionist and a traitor to the American People and the Jewish Faith!
I do not understand these American "Patriots" who want to see Pollard "rot" in prison. All he did was share information The USA had basically promised to pass on to Israel, but did not. Pollard was perhaps a wee bit overzealous. He felt that there were factions within the government of The US which were, to put it mildly, not sympathetic to Israel's survival and would deny Israel crucial information(in this case naval intelligence). I have worked for government and on several occasions it became known of an understanding within circles that Jewish people were not welcome and that Israel was dis-respected, in blatant and gross ways. So, I do understand Pollard's motivation. THe USA reneged on a plea agreement and mis-treated Pollard in prison. Cruel, inhuman treatment. He meant The USA no harm. He was only trying to prevent attacks on Israel. Come on, put your hatred of Jewish people aside, he made a mistake, he admits it. Enough, let him go
He showed that his loyalty belonged not to America but a distant country called Israel. America will not accept dual loyalties and we will not allow Jews to control our country.
It s time now to FREE POLLARD!!! he is a HERO!!!
The Israelis simply won't take no for an answer. How many times have they asked for the release of the traitor Pollard? How many times have they been turned down flat? Yet still they mither and wheedle and pester America. Whatever the event - Christmas, Easter, a new Israeli government, the appearance of a new comet in the sky - they drag this out as a reason why Pollard should, of course, be released. Chutzpah, thy name is Israel.
Pollard should rot in jail like any other traitor spy...
The American Penal System in my opinion as an American is just too harsh on everyone. There are so many thousands of sick people who we call addicts in prison who only need rehab in order to get over their problems, so many people serving 5 years for petty theft it isn't really funny. Lighter but more fitting sentences are needed around the board. So you can easily see why I do not have sympathy for Pollard when I happen to know people who just got addicted to a dangerous drug who need help serving 60 year sentences in Prison. So Israelis life may seem harsh to you, unless you study our penal system for longer then 5 minutes and see that Pollard was very lucky in comparison to some poor people who are much worse off.
People, If Israel can make a deal on Pollard, I think it would be great. On the other hand, there has always been this underlying theme on the Pollard case of: "Well gee, you know, he was spying for -Israel-, it's not like he is a real spy, not one of those nasty, awful -Russian- or -Chinese spys, so just let him go and give him a plane ticket" Even worse is the implication that his imprisonment is somehow related to anti-Semitism, and that he is in jail as a conspiracy of Nazi sympathisers. If it weren't for this bogus crap (Largely promulgated by American Jews), Israel probably could have gotten him out a couple of years ago.
The idea that Esther Pollard has a secret channel to the White House, and that the WH is just waiting for Olmert to call is absurd. I can't blame Ms. Pollard for being desperate, butt such a scam is not likely to yield the results she wants. The problem with springing this spy from prison is that there are countless men and women in the US serving equally outrageous sentences for crimes far more petty than Pollard's serious one. In my state, for example, there are people doing life for stealing a pizza, lying on a driver's license application and stealing a couple of golf clubs. The US leads the world in per capita incarceration rates as well as absoulte numbers with some 2.1 million people in jail. Compared to many of these poor souls, most of whom are people with a medical problem (addiciton), Pollard got a pretty good deal. I wish him luck, but he'd be very low on my list of inmates deserrving of release. There are hundreds of thousands ahead of him in line.
I would be thunderstruck if President Bush ever allowed Pollard out of prison. The political cost would be far too high. Every former CIA Director is also opposed. For Americans, Pollard is a sore chapter in Israeli ? American relations. Israel spends far too much diplomatic capitol on Pollard.
