Greek far-right historian on trial over allegedly anti-Jewish book
Jews tell court Costas Plevris' The Jews: The whole truth led to a spike in attacks on Jewish monuments.
By The Associated Press Tags: anti-SemitismA far-right Greek historian went on trial Tuesday for allegedly inciting racial hatred with a book that denies the Holocaust took place and allegedly contains offensive references to Jews.
Jewish community leaders testified at an Athens court that the book by Costas Plevris "The Jews: The whole truth" has led to a spike in attacks on Jewish monuments in the country.
"After the book was published, attacks against Jewish sites increased," said Moses Constantini, head of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece.
The trial - Greece's first for inciting racial hatred - was adjourned until December 13. On trial together with Plevris are the publisher, the editor and a journalist on a small right-wing magazine that published extracts from the book.
Benjamin Albalas, head of the Jewish Community of Athens, said the book "incites violence... and encourages people to kill us."
Defense lawyers said their clients were being persecuted for freely expressing their views.

Well since i am a Greek i know better what is going on here and for sure nothing antisemitic is exsisting in this country.Writers at the margin of the society like Mr Plevris are everywhere. As far as the history just check the archives what Greek people and Greek authorities did during WWII,and how many Jews souls saved because of them. And they did this when Germans was here and not under the safety of their disgusting neutrality.

A Story Worth Celebrating The Jews of Istanbul: http://www.travel-watch.com/jewsofistanbul.htm Ataturk's influence on "Jewish" life in Turkiye, a Personal View: http://www.sephardicstudies.org/ataturkrz.html
Jake, you its useless to discuss with you,you want to show Greek good, well go on,I dont really care what you think and you say. Turkish-Jewish history is clear,Ottoman and Holland were only countries which welcomed jews of Spain and read some about Turkey's efforts to save Turkish Jews from Nazis,I have nothing to explain to Greeks. My country never NEVER gave shelter to terrorists, never let terror camps in its territory.
This Greek historian went to TRIAL for denying the Holocaust and inciting against Jews. How many Turks went to trial for creating that vicious and diabolical film, a smash hit in Turkey, "The Valley of the Wolves", which among other things shows a Jewish physician taking advantage of the American invasion of Iraq by harvesting Muslim organs? A classic blood libel! How many people went to trial in Turkey for a spate of fatal attacks on Christians? By the way, did you see any polls showing Turkish public perception of America and Israel? They are among the most heavily anti-American and anti-Israel country in the world, thanks to their media.
In Ottoman Istanbul greek-jewish street fights were phenomenon. Just search about the construction of "Hemdat Israel" synagogue in Istanbul: ?Greeks and Armenians agitated widely to prevent Jews from constructing new synagogues when needed in the Empire. The best example of this came with Greek and Armenian opposition to the construction of a new Jewish synagogue at Haydarpasha in 1899. Sultan Abdul Hamid II allowed the synagogue to be built, and assured its opening despite the protests by sending a contingent of soldiers from the nearby Selimiye barracks, leading the contregation to adopt the name Hemdat Israel synagogue, but also the word Hemdat was close to the name of their benefactor, Sultan Abdul Hamid.?
Jake, you dont need to attack Turkey to prpotect greeks right? The Ottomans welcomed the Jews of Spain, and Turkey did everything to save its Jews in WWII,search the doıcumentary "Desperate Hours" or the names Behic Erkin,Namık Kemal Yolga,Selahattin Ulkumen,Necdet Kent etc. If you still say "Turkey is to threaten Israel" its your problem!
Typical greek complex against Turkey, the issue is Greek historian's book, what this has to do with Turkey, what a big complex. On the other hand Turkey is the first muslim country to recognized Israel, the two countries has a defence pact,Greece sheltered terror organizations on its soil,Palestinian May 15 Organization, Abu Nidal group, Popular Struggle Front, Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), PLO, and Black September, and also Lebanese Shiite groups. Face it!
I guess to some people everyone is anti-semetic. I suggest reading the History of Jews in Greece: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Jews_in_Greece If history teaches us anything is that in times of crises, look for help across the Aegean and vice-versa.
The Greek Church was the first Christian institution to preach Jew hatred. Read the foul doctrine preached by the socalled "saint' Chrysostome. They would have made Hitler blush.
A letter is clearly missing from your nom de plume.
Yeah, like those right-wing nut cases named Hitler , Franco, and Mussolini.
a great artist and a great writer. both free thinkers and unorthodox. if they have different opinions they are entitled to it! as #1 said: I fear the suppression of speech more than the speech. I wonder however! why jews are so paranoid and try to intimidate holocaust denials, don't they have enough evidences?
..as it is used to oppress free speech. It is a myth anyway as the holocaust was. Do I have to go to court now?
"the greeks hated evrything jewish they forbade counting of the new month, brit milah, shabbat, and all torah laws, they simply hated jews" The Maccabees did not fight against Greece; they fought against SYRIA, which was under the rule of a Hellenistic monarch, but nevertheless commanded a Syrian army. The Maccabees found 2 allies in that war, according to the books of the Maccabees. First, was the Lacedemonians (Spartans), who were said to have had a long-standing alliance with the Jews based on the belief in a shared heritage. The second ally, surprise surprise, was the Roman Republic. The Levite Hashmonean dynasty founded by the Maccabees was consistently opposed by the Pharisees (proto-rabbinics), who ended up aiding the same Hellenistic Syrian monarchy to invade Jerusalem in a bid to put down the Jewish kingdom, but it failed, and the Pharisees were duely punished for aiding and abetting the enemy.
"And Greece voted against the creation of Israel back in 1947." You mean Partition Plan Recommendation, not "creation of Israel". Perhaps you forgot to check the voting record. If you had, you would see Turkey also voted against partition of Palestine. Turkey also voted in favor of the infamous 'Zionism is racism' resolution; Greece abstained. Greece voted in favor of removing that resolution in 1991; Turkey abstained. Otherwise, Turkey consistently votes against Israel in the UN. But don't take my word for it. Check it out.
I tire of the "racism" expressed in almost every post. All Greeks are good, all Greeks are bad .. such stereotypes are always wrong. Some Greeks are bad and some are good, just like some Israelis are good and some are bad, some Canadians are good and some are bad, some Eskimos are good and some are bad...
No surprise. Anti semitism was started in Greek Alexandria in the beginning of the common era. Anti Jewishness of the new testament is a tribute of the influance of the Greek culture of that time.
the greeks hated evrything jewish they forbade counting of the new month, brit milah, shabbat, and all torah laws, they simply hated jews, mabe on purim you will say that the persians loved the jews.
Talk to any Orthodox priest - they all make their feelings quite clear about Jews. And Greece voted against the creation of Israel back in 1947. Turks and Turkey has always been very sympathetic to the Jews. So get your facts right Tavit.
"Hate literature is not protected by Freedom of Speech, anywhere" So you're against the various Islamophobic literature that seems to be everywhere?

This Muslim has dealt with Anti-semitic writings on a home page called Radio Islam. All he says he does is to defend the freedom of speech and reveal what the Jews are all about. Well he got a jail punishment of 6 month, and for this interview in Al-Manar TV, he should get another year. Not a word is true in what he is saying...
"First it was Mikis Theodorakis now this. Greece has due to the Orthodox Church been traditionally antisemitic and very anti Israeli." You forgot to check your facts before labelling everyone as anti-Semitic. Mikis Theodorakis is indeed anti-Semitic, but he arrived at his crackpot ideas from his affiliations with Communism and the Far Left, not the Greek Orthodox Church. Let's not forget that not a few of our own Jewish brothers and sisters were affiliated with these movements. If you actually knew Greek people personally, you would know they are very easy going people and easy to get along with, and indeed have a lot in common with Jews. Many of them have a high regard for Israel, except their government has in the past been driven by protecting their relations with Arabs, just like Israel has taken certain inexplicable positions to protect their interests in Turkey. Who do you think is more likely to threaten Israel in future? "Anti-Semitic" Greece, or our "good friend" Turkey?
Freedom of Speech is not unlimited anywhere in the world. All rights are provided *within reason*. There is a very good reason why you can't go around preaching hate literature, libel or slander. Anyone advocating this is living in lala land.
The moral of the story has nothing to with whether one is Greek or Turk, Christian or Muslim. There are haters-of-man everywhere. This far-right historian just happens to be one, that's all. Moderate-thinking people in all countries need to continue to strive for peaceful coexistence of all peoples, and all people. As the great American philosopher once asked, "Can we all get along? Can we all get along?"
"Greece antisemitic" - 99.9% of the Greek population have not read this book yet you are willing to blacklist an entire people because of your own paranoia. "Orthodox church has been traditionally antisemitic" - The entire Christian establishment has been "traditionally anti-semitic" and you are living in a country run by an Evangelist and with a puritan heritage.
Just in case anybody is wondering, we didn't make the whole thing up. Nor was involuntary denudement of all possessions, dignity, life, security, and unremitting brush with betrayal and death a clever way to hit the Germans up for easy cash after the war. The Earth is also not flat like a potato latke.
Greeks and orthodox church are not anti-semitic, they have never offend jews in their history. Things like these are particular racist opinions and will be never a main-stream. Look at israels ally turkey, than you will find real anti-semites.
First it was Mikis Theodorakis now this. Greece has due to the Orthodox Church been traditionally antisemitic and very anti Israeli.
I fear the suppression of speech more than the speech. Holocaust deniers may be destroyed with facts. They need not be destroyed by law. It gives them the respect that comes with oppression. Laws limiting speech and burning books are EXACTLY what Hitler favored.
