Government spokeswoman: Illegal West Bank outposts will be removed

Defense Minister Peretz recently ordered 45 settlement outpost structures to be razed, but nothing done yet.

By The Associated Press

Israel on Wednesday renewed its vow to tear down some unauthorized Jewish settlement outposts in the West Bank - a day after an anti-settlement group said dozens of existing ones had been expanded.

"The issue of illegal outposts is one this government is committed to," government spokeswoman Miri Eisen said at a new conference with foreign journalists. "The illegal outposts will be removed."

Israel is required to take down about 100 outposts - many of them just a few trailers on West Bank hilltops - according to terms of the internationally-backed road map peace plan that envisions a Palestinian state alongside Israel. The three-stage plan, first presented in 2003, has never been implemented.

Eisen declined to put a timeline on the removal, only saying it would start in earnest some time after the Jewish holiday season ends on Oct. 16. From time to time Israel tears down outposts, but many are quickly rebuilt.

On Tuesday, Peace Now reported that settlers have expanded 31 unauthorized outposts since January and built permanent structures in 12 of them.

The demolition of the outposts has been a point of contention in relations with the Palestinians and the Jewish settlers, hoping to prevent a the establishment of a Palestinian state, began building them more than a decade ago to break up Palestinian territories.

Defense Minister Amir Peretz recently ordered 45 outpost structures in the West Bank to be razed, but nothing has been done yet.

At the news conference, hosted by the Foreign Press Association, Eisen also said that Israel's priorities regarding the West Bank pullout have "changed" after the recent war in Lebanon with Hezbollah guerrillas Olmert was elected in January on a "realignment" platform, pledging a unilateral withdrawal from much of the West Bank. But Eisen said the government was now "reassessing realignment."

Eisen said Israel would not negotiate with Syria despite a second overture by Syrian President Bashar Assad. Eisen said Israel refuses to negotiate with countries, like Syria and Iran, which sponsor terrorists and provide them safe haven.

She noted, however, that Israel was always willing to reach out to more moderate Arab governments. Israel has peace treaties with Egypt and Jordan.

"Extending a hand to additional moderate Arab countries is something that this government is interested in doing," she said.

Nope, I haven't lost the argument, you have. You posted your "response" twice, guess you wanted to convince yourself. How can any decent person (I guess that excludes you) justify a modern form of slavery. It's called Universal Sufferage, valid for all countries and peoples. It's getting cold in my part of the U.S. You're continued hot air is of little use, your located too far away. I know it must hurt to have lost an argument, you have my sympathy. Wash you own car and do your own yard work, it'll do you good. Might just counteract some of your venom. This thread is now terminated....

Stealing land? You must mean what the U.S. took from Mexico. Don't talk about ignorance. You have more than your share if you don't realize how the U.S. and it's large corporations brutalized the Mexicans of yesteryear and of today's generation. Those corporations are actually working in your behalf. If you truly feel that they're taking advantage, then YOU should boycott their products and services and pay the additional costs getting them elsewhere. Before the U.S., it's citizens and employers had the Mexicans as virtual slave laborers, receiving far less than decent wages, the jobs were held by "LEGAL" residents and citizens. You can't condone "ILLEGAL" labor just because it's cheap and convenient to have somebody who has no other choice perform work that you're too lazy, cheap, or unwilling to do for yourself. Before you call your betters names, look in your mirror, I'm certain it's a soorry sight.

Your reply to me displays most ignorance , first of all it has no relevant what so ever with my point, I was talking about stealing peoples land and you went to the moon, but I will reply to your comment just to show more ignorance on your part, we the people are not whining about mexicans FYI, it's GW and company that are, without mexicans here for your information, we won't have any workers for the low income jobs, we won't have no farmers, no one moeing the lawns, no maids, no car wash workers, etc etc and all that because they are illegal, give them the legal status and they become bigger then their jobs, you get it? I love mexicans (specially the illegal ones) and don't mind them at all, so does 90% of californians, get your facts straight. now go back and read my other post and duel on it, it's a different subject :)

Olmert & his cronies NEVER LEARN. The last disengagement in Gaza resulted in an increased rain of Kassam's being fired at Israeli targets. The scheduled removal of the outposts will result in increased efforts by Hamas & Fatah to eradicate the Jewish presence. As the old saying goes: Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Is seems that the FOOLS are in charge.

    Removing illegal settlements

    • 23:08

To all those who want the settlements to remain, and you are the majoriy of the respondents. Do you understand that there is no international body that will accept their existence? Isreal is already considered by most nations an international outlaw. Do you want to continue without international support? The Americans will also abandon you, because they are comiitted to the road map. One cannot be right in his eyes only. Survival alone cannot be the goal of a nation; it needs to be survival with respect and dignity. And don't tell me that the whole world is anti-semitic and they will be against Israel anyhow. You will gain support and strength when you act legally. I am not advocating by the way removal of "legal" settlements without an agreement with Abbas. Unilatteral withdrawals will end up like Gaza and (the first withdrawal from) Lebanon. Let Israel be a bastion of justice, not only of strength.

Who does the government think it's kidding? illegal settlements will be removed - no they won't - you're only saying that because Secretary of State Rice is here. If the government were serious about the rule of law, they would have removed the illegal settlements months ago. There's nothing stopping the government from acting - apart from a strong desire not to. So stop lying to yourselves and to the public - you, the government have no intention of moving even one illegal settlement - so at least quit lying about it.

"Kadima gang": You must not forget that Israel is a democracy, this "gang" was elected, by the majority of Jews in Israel, I presume? I am talking as a bystander of course, I still like Israel is a democracy or would you prefer a theocracy, a state more or less like Iran run by the religious nationalist Zionist council of Israel, Judea and Samaria?

Thanks for trying to answer my question, yesterday. My computer crashed just after posting the question. While I think the government's plan to dismantle outposts is sorely needed and overdue, I don't think that in and of itself, it is a panacea. The Palestinians need some way to form a strong central government, capable of enforcing law and actually protecting its people.

C'mon. Like anyone believes this nonsense? It's just fodder to keep the milliards of foreign journalists based in Israel nice and busy. Notice how she doesn't answer the question of when exactly this will happen. "After the holidays" - which holidays? Succot or Pesach? The international community should just accept the fact that those outposts ain't gonna go anytime soon. Nor are the settlements. And especially not the settlement blocs.

Kadima Gang Thinks It Is Easier To Fight Its Own People
    • Ben Israel
    • 04.10.06
    • 20:03

People didn't seem to take it seriously when he said something to the effect that "Israel is too tired to fight any more". Thus, we have the disaster of the recent Lebanon war. Since the Olmert/Peretz gang's gov't has to justify itself, they think it will be easier to take the army and police and attack peaceful citizens redeeming Jewish land in the heartland of the Biblical Jewish homeland where Jews have lived CONTINUOUSLY for 4000 years (far longer than the Arabs) in Judea/Samaria. These post-Zionists like Olmert (whose sons fled Israel and refuse to fight) have no Jewish identity, so he thinks he can attack other Jews in order to justify his clinging to power. IT WONT WORK. The Jewish people will not let this crime be carried out!

Again the IDF will be used against Jews, destroying their homes, uprooting their families, removing Israelis from land that is critical to our defense. When is the IDF going to put a stop to this nonsense and return to its original purpose--defending Jews and Israel?

Israeli government to remove outposts per "the Road-map for peace"? Only those dead from the neck up fail to recognize that the Road-map is dead also. After the Gaza withdrawal DISASTER and the Lebanon FIASCO just what Israel needs is to attack Jewish patriots..It is so sad to see a country bent on it's own destruction.
