Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit was abducted in June 2006 by Hamas-linked militants from Gaza in a cross-border raid on his IDF base. Hamas and Israel have been negotiating since then for his release, mediated by Germany and Egypt.
The footage below is from a video filmed by Hamas on September 14 2009, which was handed over on Friday in return for Israel's release of 20 female Palestinian prisoners.
TRANSCRIPT:
I am Gilad, son of Aviva and Noam Shalit, brother of Hadas and Yoel, who lives in Mitzpe Hila. My identification number is 300097029. Today is Monday, September 14, 2009. As you can see, I am holding in my hand today's edition of the newspaper Palestine, September 14, 2009, published in Gaza.
(Close-up of newspaper so the date becomes clearly discernable)
I read newspapers in search of information about me. I hope to find some kind of information indicating that my release and return home is imminent. I have been waiting and hoping for a long time for the day that I am released.
I hope that the current administration, headed by Benjamin Netanyahu won't waste this opportunity to achieve a deal, and as a result I will finally be able to realize my dream and be released.
I want to send my regards to my family and to tell them that I love them and miss them very much, and pray for the day that I will see them again.
Dad, Yoel and Hadas, do you remember the day you came to visit me at my base in the Golan Heights, on December 31, 2005, which, if I'm not mistaken, is known as Revaiyah Bet?
We took a tour around the base and you took my picture atop the Merkava tank, and on one of the old tanks at the entrance to the base. We then went to a restaurant in one of the Druze villages, and on the way, we took each other's pictures on the side of the road with the snow capped Hermon Mountain as our backdrop.
I want to tell you that I feel well, in terms of health, and the Mujahideen, of the Iz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, are treating me wonderfully. Thank you very much, and goodbye.
(Shalit stands up briefly and video ends)

I read the store of Gilad Shalit with great concern considering how the relatives are being tortured psychologicaly day and nite, It is even worse to himself, Gilad psychologically he does not know whether he will see the next sun rise despite being kept properly in term of physical health It is my plea to both sides concerned to hasten the release of Gilad, Let one God of ours guide us all in our decisions. yours Concerned Earth Citizen
Hi, im brazilian jew and I'm ashamed of mine president. He should watch this kind of video instead visiting Iran. I was reading some news abou Lula that refers to brazilian people approving theirhis mandate. It is not true. All people from high society group, who have some educations degree are not happy with his acts. WE are praying for Israel and Gilad. I hoppe he comes back soon!
As an American Jew, I hope Gilad Shalit is being treated EXACTLY the same as ANY Palestinian prisoner in ANY Israeli jail or prison. Amen.
I really feel sorry and sad for every political prisoner among which is Gilad Shalit, but the question araises: what about thousands of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails?
I love that (Israel's, population 6 million) "war of attrition against the Muslim world". Quite a compliment, isn't it?
I am sure you know about Hasköy in Istanbul... I am from there where Muslims, Jews and Christians were living together... And now we are lying together in peace in our Graveyards nearby each other... Jewish one is on the top and down to the slope, Christian and Muslim ones... Even after death, they show how was our harmony and life... And they give us lessons that in our short life we have to live in piece... I am sure Gilad will be saved and Turkish Goverment can do something for this, beleive in me... Just some talks and communication, it could be succeeded.. I beg all the parts just to live prejeduces and to colloborate in this kind of stuation. Reconcilaitons and peace talks without getting tired has to be continue without secrificing them for the internal political games... Gilad will be free for sure...I pray in my relegion...
Thank you for the kind words Gilad Shalit and for your hope that there will be peace. But please note that it is the written policy of Hamas (and a significant percentage of the Palestinian population) that Hamas does not recognize Israel's right to exist in any form or shape. According to Hamas, not one meter of land should be given to the Jews. The whole war started because they did not recognise the original 1949 version of the map decided by the United Nations. If you combine Gaza and the West Bank, there is enough room for both Palestinians and the Jews, but the issue is not just territorial, but philosophical.
Shame on the Jewish People. Another aggressive unprovoked act by Arabs. Remember Hamas would love to maime and dismember him in the most attrocious manner and are not for propaganda to the world. Israel is nothing less than acting weak. The only response required here is: An ultimatum to return him in 24 hours or Israel will remove Arab city by city from Israel and remove all Hamas leaders shot day by day. In 6 hours, Gilad would be returned.
Negotiations about the release of Gilat has come symbolyse the way forward on the conflict between Palestinians and Israel. The issue is if the life of each one of us is so important then let us stop loosing more lives otherwise the negotiations are a contradiction of the intent to save and release Gilat Shalif. Avoid Lip service especial those who have power to excise on behalf of the citizens!!
I hope this boy will be released soon... As we have only one chanse of life, it has to be good and happy... All the mothers and fathers may suffer in this stuation, I hope his parents will hug him again, his girlfriend will kiss him again soon... Nobody deserves this...
Ahhh young boy!... Life is given only ones to us and you fell into this position. You had dreams, you had love, you had future... I wish peace will come an nobody will be in your position again in any corner of the Middle East and the world....
It certainly makes the captors look good that he has no injuries and does not appear too scared. If he is released under any circumstances, it will be helpful in convincing the world community that his holders are civilized and honorable. Killing a prisoner is as despicable as killing a civilian, something both sides have done.
I am glad to heard you are alive. Thank to Lord! You will come release soon. All things are possible with God.
and remember that they can redeem themselves as human beings by making as accommodating agreement as possible with the aim of allowing the release of Gilad. Everyone is with you Gilad and your wonderful brave and loving family.
Gilad Sharlit You are not alone, I prayed to God for you, that He keep you and bless you. Do not lose hope - Hatikva - Soon their release will be a reality! Never leave a soldier! Happy Chanukah at home with the family!
What if Gilad becomes an anti occupation activist upon his release? What if he supports giving Palestinians their full rights, and says things many Israelis wouldn't like to hear? Would Israelis still feel the same about him? Gilad: I am awaiting your release, and I am wondering about the type of surprises you'll have for us all!
Dear Shalit, You look fine and well taken care of. Why you are still alive God knows, because after you many have died in wars that came as a result of your capture. Surely the LORD has a reason for keeping you alive. The people who have held you captive are your brothers; the more they see you the more they get attached to you because of the presence around you. You are not alone you are a sibling of David our forefather. God gave promises for us and our children, that he will never leave us. God is with you as He was with David. David believed he would see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living and so be unto you. Our God is not an idol He hears and replies talk to Him and understand His mission through you, A leader lies in waiting in a mission like you. Meditate on the beauty of the LORD and let the peace that passes all understanding be with you. Shalom and God bless you son. Amen.
my heart goes out to Gilad every day and his wonderful enduring parents and family. This is a sad weekend.
Gilad looks like death warmed up. I hate to be so pessimistic, but please people, take a close look at that poor boy.
i take pitty on Shalit and admire his valour,i think he should be released and wait for the out come , which i believe would be positive.
for international inactivity and apathy. Hamas has shown that they have an ability to make humane jestures and for that I thank them and hope that they can provide the release of Gilad and there by they would be recognised as being humane. That is all.
Whoever suggested that Britain be boycotted - is not the brightest person ---- Britain is our friend..
What about the other missing soldiers - Gilad Shalit is not the only one - the search for Gilad should be just as strong as the search for the other soldiers
"of the Pals, by showing kindness and releasing Gilad. This would strengthen their position in the eyes of the world and the Pals. A simple human gesture? Why not?" Of course you are right. But if you see it from a palestine perpective people are taken to prisons every day. Sometimes because they cross the street in a bad moment. Of course they can let Gilad Shalit free. I'am sure he doesent mean anything to Hamas. But whats with the thousands of people in Israel prisons who are often not allowed to speak to their family too ? You come back to the question: Why must things be done anyway ? Why not doing peace. But surely we can not answer it hear and now. And lets just say the attack on Gaza with some thousands dead 90 % civilians - that doesent really help to his release.
"Gilad is a uniformed member of the armed forces held by the government of Gaza with no access to the IRC or other provisions of the Geneva Convention. Apparently that didnt make any UN reports either." Firstly. He was captured not by Hamas. Second, most Israelis do not consider Gaza as state and Hamas not as a government but as a terrorist organization. A terrorist organization is not able to do a war crime, what they do are acts of terrorizm. And the Geneva Conventions is neither accepted by Israel nor by Hamas. Which the Goldstone Report has proven. Of course if Hamas would be considered as a regular Army the should give acess to the International Red Cross/Red Crescent Organization. As far as I know the Israeli government, the USA the EU don't recognize Hamas as a military organization yet and Gaza not as a state - but as a terrorist organization. That doesent mean that what they do is legal or even morally right. But he is not a prisoner of war according to ICRC.
Am I the only one that is so sick to my stomach at the site of this clip and feels that Gilad looks positively awful? The site of him is frightening. He looks terrfied, totally lacking any sense of self there. Did you see that forced smile on his face? The look of fear in his eyes? The terror when he kept glancing up, obviously receiving instructions? Do you hear the tremor in his voice? I've never seen anyone so beaten, so obviously tortured for so long. This is worse then I could have ever imagined. My thoughts and prayers with the family...and hopes for good news soon
of the Pals, by showing kindness and releasing Gilad. This would strengthen their position in the eyes of the world and the Pals. A simple human gesture? Why not?
is trying to blame Israel for everything and anything rather than continue the good work and retrive Gilad back to Israel.
Boycotts are in theory illegal according to WTO, and members of the WTO are forbidden from boycotting eachother, especially for political reasons, Israel being a moral country will surely not fall for your crap, and will probably keep trade relations, despite the 5000 geniuses that decided to march in the UK. Chris, you have way to much time on your hands if your purpose is to create a boycott between Israel and the UK. Oh and great job on making the world a better place Chris, it really adds a lot to things you post. Like how you are a moral person and by extension a Goldstoner.
Wish him to get back home as soon as possible ... n hope to normal life...whatever "normal life" meanz .
I, as a Palestinian am glad to hear that Gilad is still alive. I have been following up with the story since the incident. Like someone else had mentioned in the previous comments there are many Palestinians being tortured and rotting in Israeli Prisons. Some for no reason at all. This conflict needs to end because we are ALL sick and tired of it. I am sick and tired of my American tax dollars supporting Israeli's.
yes, it sounds quite 'out of context', its knowledge only one of the attending parties of that visit can have. maybe his family demanded he would talk about this trip for (further) proof its him...
Gd bless you that this boy, now a man was taken from his people and is being treated wonderfully if these words were not coerced. I am sure Shalit is a wise jewish and at first he was frightened. If the Mujahideen did perform acts of loving kindness to Galid while denying him his freedom. A muslim and a jew never met a jew to interrogate what is it about this Jewish boy like our boys who will one day teach peace.
Hope you are coming home soon.
The poor kid is a gentle soul being put through hell on earth by the evil one. The evil one loves to torture the Creators gentle children. I wont comment on his condition or appearance. Only his Moms' opinion counts anyway. I will say that under the circumstances he probably did not get a lot of fresh air and sunshine or exercise. Hopefully the army will pay him all he has coming to him, so he can start a normal life as soon as he is released. PLEASE do not launch any gung ho rescue operations PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!
Do not lose faith. This is what keeps us all. "From your mouth to G-d's ears", that your wish should come true. Shana Tovah to you and yours.
so glad to see that Gilad is alive. Please g-d he will be home with his family soon.
I am happy. now, can we just make peace. most American are tired of this conflict.
Gilad is a uniformed member of the armed forces held by the government of Gaza with no access to the IRC or other provisions of the Geneva Convention. Apparently that didnt make any UN reports either.
Anachnu ohevim otkha ve anachu meetpalalim beeshvilkha ve ha mishpocha shelka.
I am pleased that I was wrong about Shalit being dead. However, his speech seems rehearsed and not spoken freely. I suppose he was given a script or his speech was edited before he was allowed to appear in this video. Yes, he looks thin, but I think those who claim malnutrition in Gaza is the cause forget that the Arabs' first action, after destroying the synagogues and homes, was to destroy the greenhouses and gardens which supplied fresh fruit and vegetables not only to the Jewish families in Gaza but to observant Jews throughout the world. I used to be able to buy them at a kowher market, but they are no longer available. (And yes, you have to kosher vegetables to make sure they are free of insect infestation, usually by imersion for several hours in ice water. You did not have to do that with the lettuce from Gaza.)
OUR SON!
..to talk about the visit at Revaiyah Bet? Sure looks like a hidden message to me. Remember the movie "Capricorn One", when Brubaker gave a hint of what was really going on with an innocent sounding remark about a family trip? I guess Shalit knows that film.
Shalit is one, there are 11000 Palestinians like him rotting in Israeli jails! At least this one is a soldier and had been killing Gazans prior to his capture...
Connie the premise that you suggest is thus.... If the world fails to support Israeli crimes against humanity then one day the west will fail and become one big Something-Stan. Does this mean that it was inevitable before Israel was created and given free reign to commit its crimes against the Muslim world? And are you suggesting that unless Israel continues to receive the worlds support for its war of attrition against the Muslim world in general then we will all lose the way of life we espouse to? You seem to be a rather brainwashed Zionist who simply believes in convincing the world to win Israels battles regardless of the level of deception and depravity you must stoop to. Much as the current regime in Israel, I would add.
20 very costly prisoners, which amount to a thorn in the side. If the current govt wanted him released then he would already be released. The Palestinians will never accept a lesser deal and they will leave him in Jail forever because it scores them political points. For Israel he is an excuse to continue aggressions which the Palestinians know is counter-productive, His chances at release are negligible.
Of course, as evidenced by the exchange of a murderer for the bodies of two innocent Israeli youth last year. Not even Shalit can keep a straight face when saying he is in good health and treated well--and you can be certain that behind those cameras were men forcing him to utter such lies.
I'm afraid you've been reading too many comics Rob. The Palestinian prisoners in Israel have Red Cross visits, family visits, conjugal rights, medical care and can get an education if they so wish. Samir Kuntar, the triple murderer from Lebanon, got a university degree while serving his prison sentence in Israel. Studying is available to any prisoner who desires it.
I am absolutely sure the Shalit family do not need well wishes from a person as yourself. Dont worry your little head about Netanyahu. Most Israelis approve the release of 450 terrorists. There are 1000's of terrorists and wannabe terrorists in Gaza, Judea and Samaria - so another 450 wont make any difference. These prisoners will be closely monitored on their return home. Of your million marchers, I'm sure 90% of them were Muslims. Britain has become laughable.
Gilad from myself and my family we wish you good health and to stay strong; one day you will be reunited with your family, and G-d willing your captors will pay the ultimate price.
You have got to be kidding. What about all the Israeli soilders that were killed, r u actually serious? You should familiarize yourself with what is going on. Ignorant.
The only reason he is alive (he is in so much pain) is because he is being used as bate. MORALITY on the part of HAMAS?!! Are you CRAZY?! (that was a rhetorical question, because frankly I already know the answer). Palestinian militant and terrorist organizations such as Hamas are just as likely to kill there own fellow Arabs (example: Fatah) as they are a Jew or Christian. I don't see any morals in that.
Suppose he was a Pal-prisoner in Israel. He would long be tortured to death as so many. Arab morality have given the Jews a lesson in morals.
Well done Victor, you've finally noticed the malnutrition in Gaza - according to the UN over 50% of the children are malnourished - I wonder whose to blame for that? Oh yeah and there is problems with movement in Gaza too - maybe Gilad is a good metaphor for the whole of the strip - a prisoner of prisoners.
Your expression of pleasure that Gilad Shalit looks well falls on deaf ears because it is empty of any feeling or caring for any Israeli or Jew. Secondly I personally would not be proud to know that I live in a society (u.k.) that boasts one million people demonstrating in favor of Hamas. How warped and sick that is. Believe me I have no feeling for the U.K....they have alot to answer for themselves but I can tell you one thing...the best is yet to come for you..one day when you least expect it you will be a citizen of Londanstan...with sharia law and all the ugliness that goes along with living in an islamic country. Keep supporting hamas and remember that turning your back on Israel can be a very dangerous thing because we all answer to a higher authority and he knows what is right and what is wrong.
He doesn't care about the truth why should I. Actually the million marched against Lebanon2. But what's a war between friends when I am trying to organise a boycott of Britain. Afterall we get a Christmas Tree from Norway every year, clear evidence of a Christian plot against Israel. But I digress, it is very good news that Gilad Shalit is alive and well. Now the question is how Netanyahu and Barak will respond, and how the Israeli people will react to their reaction all good.
i went through similar thing with my husband, it ended well for us. i wish him only good, ...m
He is just a little kid who got caught in a situation that is too big for him or anyone else to handle. I hope that he and the other prisoners return to their families soon and for sanity to prevail.
No not 1,000,000. About 5,000. Where the hell did you get that from???
I guess he looks thin because there little food available to feed the hungry in Gaza, maybe if Israel let people live, things could be better. Any Ya Ya maybe more wars and massacres on innocent people is needed!! Ask America this time to support with more waepons and bombs...
Thanks Nate,#1,That was a step toward peace, but a great step to permanent peace between Israelis,Palestinians, and Arabs countries. Thanks Germans and Egyptians for their efforts.God bless you all.
his arms are those of a person who has no movement and they are totally undeveloped !
This is a very heart breaking, and emotional video. Although Gilad looks o.k., you can tell that this was rehearsed, and he is instructed to follow direcition. You can feel the fear in his voice. LETS FINALLY BRING GILAD HOME!!! NO ONE KNOWS WHEN THE NEXT OPPERTINUTY WILL COME. Where is the Internation Red Cross to check on Gilad? Hamas will be dealt with at a later time!!!........
looks healthy in the circumstances and mentally appears to be coping remarkably well. I am pleased the naysayers who had predicted he was dead have been shown to be spectacularly wrong. The onus now is on the Israeli government, and the pressure on Netanyahu is going to be immense as the Israeli public demand that Gilad comes home to his family after three long years. On a passing note Mr Lieberman can you please boycott the United Kingdom as 1 million people in the UK marched in support of Hamas during Operation Cast Lead.
Good to hear Gilad is alive and well and is being treated well by Hamas. As a Palestinian, I say both Palestinians and Israelis need to live in peace once and for all. We need to put our differences aside and make it happen.
