Germany to provide 5m euros for Jewish museum in Warsaw

German envoy to Poland: Germans continue to acknowledge their responsibility for destruction of Polish Jewry.

By DPA Tags: Germany Jewish World Poland

The German government signed an agreement Monday to provide 5 million euros for the construction of a museum in the Polish capital of Warsaw to document the millennium-long history and culture of Jews in Poland.

The agreement, signed by German Ambassador Michael Gerdts and a Polish sponsorship group, will make funds available for the preparations for the museum's permanent exhibition.

The Museum of the History of Polish Jews is set to open in 2010, across from a memorial to those killed in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of 1943.

Before the Nazi German invasion in September 1939, 3.5 million Jews lived in Poland. By 1945, most had been murdered by the Nazis.

Gerdts said the engagement by the German government was meant as a further contribution to redress the great suffering that "was inflicted in the name of Germany upon the Jews in this country and thereby upon the whole of Poland as well."

"It is also to make clear that Germans continue to acknowledge their responsibility for this tragic past," the ambassador said.

The signing took place in a Warsaw office building that was the site of Warsaw's Grand Synagogue prior to World War II.

Speaking at the signing, former Polish foreign minister Wladyslaw Bartoszewski mentioned that Juergen Stroop, the SS commander responsible for crushing the Warsaw ghetto uprising, ordered the synagogue to be blown up as a symbolic gesture that no Jewish areas remained in Warsaw.

Poland was the biggest Jewish center in Europe and should have been the first to have a museum. As to Israel neglecting survivors. The state is stretched to protect its pple. This costs a fortune.

Germany & Poland should save their money. The world doesn't need yet ANOTHER jewish/holocaust museum. As long as there are jews around, no one is likely to forget. I'm sure of that. The money would be better spent on the poverty-stricken holocaust survivors in Israel that the ever so holy Israeli government obviously doesn't care about.

Sorry to hear about your post war experiences and yes, it was a disgrace. There is some work done about incidents you describe by some historians. You have to agree however that there was not "an open season" to hunt Jews as some people claim. There was Police (milicja), Army, UB etc. and criminals (in this case hard anti-Semites) were punished for murder. Look at murderess in Kielce case. Until 1968 Jews who despite anti-Semitism opted to stay put, lived in Poland with no problems. You know our history, Poland was a very chaotic place right after the war, freshly taken over by the communists, with civil war going on. Unfortunately Jews had its role in establishing communist system in Poland which only gave more reasons for anti-Semites to hate Jews and "take action". I always felt sorry for innocent people who survived the Holocaust, had nothing to do with communism and still suffered from the hands of anti-Semites in post war Poland. That had to be really painful.

I wish it was so simple. Poland after the war was a dangerous place for us. I worked in a Jewish orphANAGE , collecting children from Poles n the country. My husband, blond and blueyed was safe to go into the villages, wgere Jews could be murdered, no questions asked. We had a 24 hour guard with arms on our doorstep. If this is not a disgrace in postwar Europe ?

I agree with you. Polish society should have try harder to help their Jewish compatriots but considering the conditions people lived under at that time.... they did a lot. The problem is that some Jews don't know or don't want to know that. They constantly whining about "szmalcowniki" , cases of blackmail etc. Sometimes they simply lie ( Poles were guards at Auschwitz etc.) or openly "spit in Poland's face" with other nonsense. They call Poles "Pollack's" and other names forgetting that at the same time they are insulting 6000 Polish Righteous Among the Nations. THIS HAS TO CHANGE.

About "zydokomuna". Jakub Berman along with with Hilary Minc (also Jew) and Boleslaw Bierut (this one was Pole) practically run communist Poland in the 1944-1956 Stalinist period (you do the math). Berman was responsible for the secret police - political trials, repressions of democratic opposition, killing inconvenient people. Minc managed economy/industry and that meant forced nationalization (he's genuine idea) - including Jewish property that you now want back. Minc also succeeded in destroying virtually all private business and forced socialist economy (which ultimately ruined Poland).

I am also from Poland, and the Poles always refered to Zydo-komuna. Forgetting that Jews were sent to Siberia if they were business pple or Zionists. There was much poverty among the Jews and some turned to Communism, many turned away from it when they discovered its true face. As to Poles in the war, some were more than decent, some turned in their best friends , some did it for money, others from hatred instilled by the church. At a seminar of polish historians I spoke with Polish professors who went public with the opinion that not enough was done to save Jews

First you agree that Marx,Einstein, and others were Jewish and then you ask me if Michnik is also a Jew?? He is not because"His parent were not associated with Judaism"?? I know several Jewish atheists from Israel, who are they? Not Jews? Don't you know there is a difference between religion and nationality? There are many Polish Catholics in Poland and many e.g. Spanish Catholics in Spain-are they all together one nation? For gentiles nationality is not connected with religion. Polish atheist is still a Pole though he is not a Catholic. Michnik says variously about his nationality. It's your big problem:Who is a Jew. Not mine. "Do you still insist that the Jews were responsible for comminism in USSR and Poland?" What is it? You can't understand my two simple sentences? ".. and nothing about many Jews in stalinist regime in Poland after the war"; "And don`t forget Marx - a Jew." (my answer to Absolute Sweden) It means: ALL and ONLY Jews are responsible for communism??!! SICK!

You hate Poles so much that you don't care about the whole truth of Polish-Jewish history. 800 years of Jews (Jewish refugees from almost all European countries) in Poland? You don't care! Poles are anty-Semites and Jew-murderes - it's your truth! 3 million Poles perished under German occupation? You don't care! Poles are anty-Semites and Jew-murderes! Nazi camp Auschiwtz was built for Poles, Poles were the first prisoners and over 75 000 of them perished there? You don't care! Poles are anty-Semites and Jew-murderes! Over 6000 known Polish Righteous, thousands murdered for help your compatriots? You don't care! Your basic "truth": Poles together with Germans are responsible for the holocaust! Poles together with Germans murdered 6 million Jews! You even KNOW:there were "POLISH death camps"! You make me sick

In general, during the German occupation, most Poles were engaged in a desperate struggle for survival. They were in no position to oppose or impede the German extermination of the Jews even if they had wanted to. There were however many cases of Poles risking death to hide Jewish families and in other ways assist the Jews. (Only in Poland was death a standard punishment for a person and his whole family, and sometimes also neighbours, for any help given to Jews.) In September 1942 the Provisional Committee for Aid to Jews (Tymczasowy Komitet Pomocy Żydom) was founded on the initiative of Zofia Kossak-Szczucka. This body later became the Council for Aid to Jews (Rada Pomocy Żydom), known by the code-name Żegota. It is not known how many Jews were helped by Żegota, but at one point in 1943 it had 2,500 Jewish children under its care in Warsaw alone. (See also an example of the village that helped Jews: Markowa). Because of these sorts of actions, Polish citizens have the highest amount of Righteous Among The Nations awards at the Yad Vashem Museum.

The best-kept secret in the U.S. about the Holocaust is that Poland lost six million citizens or about one-fifth of its population: three million of the dead were Polish Christians, predominantly Catholic, and the other three million were Polish Jews. The second best-kept secret of the Holocaust is the greatest number of Gentile rescuers of Jews were Poles, despite the fact that only in Poland were people (and their loved ones) immediately executed if caught trying to save Jews. The Yad Vashem museum in Israel honors "the Righteous Among the Nations" and Poland ranks first among 40 nations with 5,503 men and women, almost one-third of the total, honored for their "compassion, courage and morality" and who "risked their lives to save the lives of Jews

Gentlemen: I do not for a moment hold the current generation of Germans responsible in the least for what happened in Europe under the Nazi regime. That said, the German Federal Republic has less than clean hands. Denazification trials after the end of World War II can be called nothing but farcical and the Federal Republic had many former Nazis in it's leadership well into the 1970s. Finally, the initiative to build a museum is a matter involving Germany and Poland, that's all. And by the way, how many years did wars between France and Germany go on? Why the rush to forget what happened not too many years ago involving Jews?

Yes, gen Jaruzelski is a Pole, but it doesn't mean that Jewish butchers weren't Jews. You know about Adam Michnik (a Jew) from daily "Gazeta Wyborcza" (called often "kosher" because of its staff)? There were some Poles with Jewish blood on their hands but it doesn't mean, as so many Jews want, that the Poles-all nation are responsible for murder of 6 million Jews. bat yam- do you know that number of murdered Jews in Jedwabne is about 400 not 1600 as your Gross teaches you? From a NY Times book review (by DAVID MARGOLICK Published: July 23, 2006)of Jan Gross's book "Fear..." Polish attitudes toward the Germans remain understandably bitter. During his trip to Poland this May, when he visited Auschwitz, the German-born Pope Benedict XVI took care to speak mostly in Italian. But as Gross reminds us, in at least one respect many Poles applauded Hitler: just as he offered a final solution to Germany?s Jewish problem, he was taking care of Poland?s, too. Nazi policies toward the Jews, the legendary underground Polish diplomat Jan Karski reported to his government-in-exile in London in 1940, formed ?a sort of narrow bridge where the Germans and a large part of Polish society meet in harmony.?

They have failed to even rebuild the Jewish Cemetary in Radziejow, Poland. The town of Radziejow has failed to return Jewish property. The site http://www.polandinjustice.com records many of the problems of failing to compensate the Jews of Poland. As far as the Germans go, they don't have enough blood money to pay for the sins of their fathers. However, at least, they are trying.

Are you trying to identify the one and the other? As the article rightly states, it is all about responsibility for things that have been done in the name of Germany and not about personal guilt. As we continue to cherish the good sides of German history and tradition, we need to face the dark sides as well. It's just that simple.
