German microbrewery finds niche market in kosher beer
First 30,000 bottles of Simcha pilsner have sold out since being put on the market at the end of April.
By The Associated PressA microbrewery in eastern Germany has found success with a new niche product: officially certified kosher beer.
The first 30,000 bottles of Simcha pilsner - a name that means joy in Hebrew - have sold out since being put on the market at the end of April, said Wilfried Gotter, a spokesman for the new product.
Brewed under the strict Bavarian purity laws with only water, hops, grain, and yeast, almost all German beer is technically kosher - fit for consumption according to Jewish law.
But Simcha goes one step further, having Berlin Orthodox Rabbi Yitshak Ehrenberg oversee the brewing and bottling process and give it official kosher certification.
For very religious Jews the availability of kosher beer is tremendously important, Gotter said. The certification takes it to the next level.
The Jewish organization Saxonian Friends of Israel and SCHALOM, a Jewish restaurant in Chemnitz, came up with the idea of producing a certified kosher beer and approached the brewer at the Brauerei Hartmannsdorf in Saxony for help.
With samples of popular kosher beer from elsewhere to work from, the brewmaster there came up with about a dozen brews before the group finally decided on what became Simcha, Gotter said.
The first batch sold out mainly to German Jewish organizations, restaurants, stores and private buyers but Gotter said the beer was also sold to buyers in Israel, the U.S., Belgium, and other European countries. The second batch should be ready by the end of August, he said.
Berlin kosher grocery store owner Ore Plaezl said that, with the advent of Simcha, he has stopped stocking imported Israeli beers Maccabee and Goldstar because they are too expensive. His customers liked the Saxony brew so much that they bought out his first delivery.
"It was well received," Plaezl said.

"By me holding the sons and daughters of the Nazis resposnable for their parents is not a form of racisim" Adam, whether you hold me responsible for what my parents did (BTW what do you know of my parents?) or not is absolutely of no meaning to me. You refuse reconciliation, that's OK, but don't expect that we humiliate ourselves to deserve your forgiveness. Stay in your world of hate, I couldn't care less.
"Just FYI, the German Beer Purity Law, while still adhered to by many brewers (in and out of Germany), it is not enforceable by law in Germany any more." ... but rest assured that no quality beer in Germany would survive which does not adhere to the purity law. You Brits with no written constitution know that there are laws which never change.
Adam, I lived in Munich with a German family for 6 months while I was studying there. When they found out I was Jewish they went very far out of their way to try and apologize for what happend in the 1940's, even though none of them were alive until 10 years after. The soul searching is constant, and permiates life there more than you would imagine or admit. The holocaust is and will always be a scar on German identity. Even though the vast majority of those responsible are long dead, they will always have to deal with it. Harping on it any more than it is already will only stir anti-semitic sentiments in the country, sentiments which in six months I never came close to feeling.
You deviate from my argument. Yes, more needs to be done in Sudan. The Germans have a special responsability though, because of their involvment in the Holocaust to insure that genocide never occurs again. The GERMANS need to act in Sudan. The Germans need to speak out agains Iran! The Germans should expell the Iranian diplomats in Berlin for their denial of the Holocaust. The Germans were responsable for the murder of 6 million Jews and millions of other peoples. Its now time for Germany to be the leader in preventing genocide from ever happening again intead of contiuing to ride on the back of the bus with blinders on. BTY, I don't forgive the Germans!
" But why do the germans continue to sit on their hands when millions are being murderd in sudan?..." The United States has, itself, done little except dish up the usual lip-service and abandon the issue.
Is it not true that the Germans overwhelmingly supported hitler? BTY, I drive an American car and enjoy Belgian and Dutch beers
I am sorry, but you are wrong here. It is not the unemployed rabbis who are out to make easy money here, but the brewery, who think that they will increase their sales.
By me holding the sons and daughters of the Nazis resposnable for their parents is not a form of racisim that is equal to or compareable to the crimes and atrocities commited by the Nazis, its much much different! The Germans bear a unique responsability to defend those who face genocide! But why do the germans continue to sit on their hands when millions are being murderd in sudan? why do the germans sit on their hands when Iran threatens to wipe Israel off the map? I don't support the sons and daughters of the nazis because they have done so little to atone for what their country and what their parents did. The Germans don't like to talk about the holocaust; they wish to sweep it under the rug so we all forget. We will never forget and I personaly will NEVER buy your death brew or your death cars.
You take a lot of things for granted. One of them is that there are no female mashgikhot. My niece passed a course and is certified to do this work. Incidentally, not ALL religious people are crooks, neither are all non-religious people.
Everyone has to believe in something,... and I believe I'll have another beer!
Schmaltz Brewing Company is making an absolutly delicious Bitterweet RIPA named in honor of Lenny Bruce. Their Pomegranite Ale is also quite good. Very strong, very tasty. KSA supervized. Redhook Brewing Company is also supervized. OU. Their Longhammer Ale is very drinkable in the heat of the Summer months. Enjoy!
I'LL DRINK TO THAT.
He'Brew (U.S.) Coors Beers (U.S.) Blue Moon Belgian White Layla Lager (Israel) Miller Beers (U.S.) He'Brew Messiah Gold (U.S.) Cobra (India) Ramapo Valley Brewery (U.S.) Redhook Ale (U.S.) There are quite a few more, and most can be ordered online (if you're prepared to pay the postage). Cheers!!
Just FYI, the German Beer Purity Law, while still adhered to by many brewers (in and out of Germany), it is not enforceable by law in Germany any more. The EU decided that laws limiting ingredients from one German state to another (the purity law was only enforced in Bavaria) was anti-competition and struck down the law. Again, it is not legally binding, but it is a mark of quality assurance if your brewer just uses the 4 allowed ingredients. On another note, I admire Adam and his complete knowledge and family histories of the brewers; how else can he claim they are the "sons of Nazis"? Must be tough for him to keep track of every German, but apparently someone has to do it, if only to protect us from their beer. (I hope he only rides in non-Mercedes sheruts!).
holding the sons / daughters of murderers responsible for the deeds of their parents is a kind of racism because it implies that it is in their tribe/people to be murderers. racism is what caused the holocaust. your state of mind is obviously not so much different than those of the people you condem here rightfully...
This seems like another scheme to needlessly employ yet another bunch of lazy, good-for-nothing rabbis who will extract fees to give so-called kosher certification to yet another product which is inherently kosher. And while I'm on the subject of kosher certification, how come there are no women permitted to do this job? Or gentiles? The job is simple: learn some rules; make sure the rules are being followed; and then certify that the rules were followed thereby representing to prospective customers that the product is "kosher". You don't have to be Irish to be a cop. Seems like anyone regardless of gender, religion or race should be able to do this job. Except that the orthodox have turned this into a racket to provide emplyment to male members of their community. Throw the buggers in jail! In America they'd all qualify for prosecution under the RICO statutes.
the german beer is kosher by the way it is produced, contrary to a few kosher dedicated israeli beer which are sugar doped to increase alcohol content. but what the heck ,the rabbi kosher supervisor will make some money out of it.
they added the rabbi, that's the difference. ;0)
so what if it has been 60 years since the Germans and their european buddies tried to murder all the worlds Jews?? Lets get drunk on their swill!
I am quite puzzled by this quite obvious commercial venture, as I do not know anyone from the chareidi (ultra Orthodox) community in Britain who doesn't drink any beer. I have never heard of anyone not drinking a brand of beer for lack of a kashrut certificate.
According to the German Law of Purity, all beer must be made only from malted barley, yeast, hops and water. Nothing else is permitted, so what in the world is the difference here ?
Whats new about brewing beer according to kosher principles and getting the kosher certificate by that? All the german beers in Israel are kosher and Salitos also, which comes originally from South America and is produced now in Germany and imported to israel. So whats the story, that a brewery gets a kosher certificate? Ask a Rabbi to come to the brewery to inspect and get the certificate, thats it.
... this is the sort of story that brings a warm smile to my face.
