German firm cancels deal with Iran port due to Israeli pressure
Israel envoy to Berlin tells German officials Israel would see contract as aiding terrorist arms deal.
By Barak Ravid Tags: Shimon Peres Iran nuclear Israel newsAfter heavy diplomatic pressures from the Israeli government, a German construction company on Monday canceled its end of a contract to renovate the Bander Abbas Port in Iran.
Israel's ambassador to Berlin told Chancellor Angela Merkels' top aides, as well as foreign ministry officials, that Iran has been exporting weapons from that port bound for Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
Ambassador Yoram Ben Ze'ev stressed that the Gaza-bound weapons ship "Francop," which was recently apprehended by the Israel Defense Forces in the Mediterranean, had been dispatched from that Iranian port.
A political official said that the Israeli embassy received word just over a week ago of a deal in the works between the Hamburg Company, which is partly owned by the German government, and the Iranian agencies.
Ben Ze'ev stressed that Israel viewed the contract as German assistance to an Iranian arms deal with terror organizations, and a violation of United Nations resolutions.
At Israel's request, German officials contacted the company owners and hinted that ir preferred the deal be terminated. Several days later, the company announced that it would withdraw from the contract.
President Shimon Peres arrived in Berlin on Monday ahead of international Holocaust Memorial Day on Wednesday, during which he is scheduled to address the German parliament in Hebrew.
The president will also speak to Merkel regarding Germany's financial ties with the Islamic country.

Yes, you are right. It is not public news in Germany. Yesterday no word of it in the leading news, whether papers, online or tv. Haaretz made it public also to the German readers. Thank you!
No German jobs will be lost. It is business as usual. Siemans contracts will all be honored to Iran but through the back door. It will not be necessary to fire up the crematory ovens just yet. Sorry you'll have to wait till later. Merkel will get her day in the sun and out next election.
Who do you think will pay for it, government or Israeli workers?I know you don't care,I know you are just mad that your claim Israel is isolated worldwide was proven as a wishful thinking faaaar away from reality.Right, dear anti-semite? Yap,when Israel talks, others listen.
weapons to Iran. Weapons OK. Port facilities not OK. Double standard much? Then again, who's making money?
Brazen, Murray and the like. They are rearing to trash any people, religion, culture, etc. with the most obnoxious insults if people don't do Israel's bidding! And for the Einstein who accused Germany of aiding murder - IT'S A PORT, genius! 99% of the cargo is civilian - food, medicine, basic material, etc. If you really want to stop brazen murder (pun intended) lift the blockade off your concentration camp, i.e. Gaza! You fanatics really aren't doing Israel any favors!
I agree Germany is a great Nation but this is what you get when you in "BAD" Company.I hope Germany will get out of this mess before it is too late.
I would be surprised if this is public news in Germany, especially when Merkel's approval rate is on a fast declining trend.
while the rest of the world's nations take a free pass and continues this 'back door chicanery.' It is time to bring this Iranian saga to a close - one way, or the other. Unfortunately, the burden will fall on us. Show time is fast approaching...
Thank you Haaretz for publishing this news. As usual you can't find any actual report about this in German media. They simply silence it. Unbelievable for our 'free' press.
"Iran is as much a dangeur to Germany as it is to Israel. " Israel is a much bigger danger to Iran than vice versa....in terms of raw power, based on the rhetoric coming out of both countries...Israel makes clear they want an attack on Iran. Israel even links movement on making peace with her own neighbors with how much threats are leveled against Iran Who is a threat to whom? Thinking is sometimes required.
Germany (and China nowadays) is the biggest exporter of the world. So it is not so special that Germany is Irans biggest trade partner. By the way the United States is splitting their export through different countries. So maybe they would be the biggest exporter to Iran if they dont use this fixed statistics. If it would be Israels decisions we couldnt trade with half of the world. Russia and China can step in, maybe the USA will step in. (Thats what the US is hoping for.) --- But of course, in German companies we are 100 % Nazis. This should be the explanation. By the way: The Iranian Nuclear programm was started by the US. At that time they were already enemy of Israel. If you're friend of the US it doesent matter if your enemy is Israel - just if you're not friend with the USA. Why is the US Trading with Saudi Arabia - They are the most Antisemtic Society i know knowadays.
1/3 of all parts for irans nuke program come from Germany. what a surprise huh? good ol germans. it's not at all a surprise that german industry, led by many ex nazis who morphed into regular society post WW2, and many younger sympathetic closet nazis are STILL trying to achieve what they set out to do... The real question is; will germany be a part of a peaceful future or do they belong only to their stained past?
first of all we should stop delivering and paying for weapons such as nuclear subs to Israel. Israel/Palestine is a crises region. By basic German law it is absolutely forbidden to export weapons to such places, especially to such a rough state that violates basic humans rights on a daily basis. For such a state to interfere in ordinary economic ties between two other states is just another peak of chuzpa. Of course Merkel is bought and sold and has no spine to defend a German State company that is repairing a port. To bad we have to suffer another 4 years from this neo liberal government that does not have the guts to support Obama in times were it really matters. Schroeder recently met the Iranian president and he confronted Bush on his war on Iraq. This we can't expect from Merkel if she does not even manage to withstand a little pressure from Israel. It would be so easy to say, okay we leave the job to the russians if you evacuate your settlements. That would be a deal, wouldn't it
Why should Iran be a danger ? They want to buy a lot of German products. They are running out of water and need to import a lot of engines and stuff which germany offers. On the other side Europe wants to get the gas resources, to be more independent off Russian gas. The so called Nabucco Pipeline is just efficient if Iran put the gas in. To make sanctions on Iran gives Russia the Monopol. Together with Iran Russia has 75 % of world gas resources. Thats the only reason i could imagine Russia is not giving full S 300, S-400 supply to Iran before they dont have exclusive rights in the Iran gas.
Talkback's good for men who want to enjoy themselves in bashing each others. More than being concerned about our countries we maybe have to be concerned about us as men. How come that we're so disposed to cynical, brutal behaviour? Do we actually believe we'll be rewarded for that?
Already the starting point is wrong. I cannot see a reason why Iran should be sanctioned to export arms, whereas Israel is doing so a lot. Germany is just manipulated by a strong Israeli mafia. This is a pity. Mrs. Merkel obviously does not speak for the German people.
Iran is as much a dangeur to Germany as it is to Israel. YOU know it as well as I do. You try to mis lead by pointing to a few dirty penny lost by some rich scum, but it will not work. The real representative of Germany Angela Merkel, know better.
Are you saying that Jewish lives are more precious than others? Heavy racism it is. Such things do not go gown well in Canada. When are you leaving for Tel Aviv?
I bought Russian stocks 8 month ago and I am absolutely satisfied. Thanks Israel for the support of the Russian stock market. Should I keep my stocks ? Of course the German trade with Iran is considered to be "Nazi trade". Have you lookes lately at the American trade with Iran ? Its uprising will a big rate every year. Of course anybody In Israel can imagine how much we in Germany like it that you support Russian and American trade with Iran, but European trade with iran should be forbidden and is of course "very Antisemetic". And the next day you wonder why feeelings of "Antisemitism" is spreading in Europe. Really ?
Axel, I am of those who believes that the life of anyone of the 6 million Jews who died in the Holocaust is worth billions of those Iranian harbours that export Terror. Think twice before you understand what you write, O Intelligent!
Brazen, greetings from Germany. Initially I was very sympathetic of the jews, but you show that they aren't victims only, you sound much more like a hateful extremist. And on your argumentation: "Illegal", nothing illegal about renovating a port. Who cares what rights israel has or has not, who cares on your right to defend yourself. Stop being so self-centred. This isn't about israel-iran, this is about Israel influencing German interior politics. Germany is one of the FEW friends of Israel that stand solidary to it no matter what happens, probably the only one that is a friend by own choice, USA is only because of their own Jewish minorities pro-Israel influence. If you abuse that friendship, there won't be anyone with significance left in Europe to support you. Israel is a small country, surrounded by people that don't like you too much. You can't nuke everyone else, and if you did you would destroy your own would die as well. I hope the people in power aren't like brazen.
and yet again Israel thrives to make itself hated.
Heinz most likely is a "new German" only repeating what his imam says from the pulpit he doesn't care to shame Germany masquerading as a real German, with the only German name that he knows.
To give in to terrorists blackmail, will invite more blackmail.
"Damaging German trade is a shame" Yes, it's such a shame terminating deals which serve criminal purposes.
" Does Israel pay compensation" Why should a contract which aids criminals require compensation if cancelled? What planet are you on, fruitloop? Should a government compensate companies for busting up mafia relationships they are involved in?
so all German credits would go up in flames. Israel is doing you a favor warning about it.
Hie punctuation and lack of capitals is not the best, but what he wrote, was right on!
They can keep busy in Haiti for 10 yrs.
Israel accusing others of violating UN resolutions? Pull the other one!
late night phone calls, emails, visits by embassy officials, faxes, just an annoying ex girlfriend! mind your own business Israel, Iran never attacked anyone, but you did, so zip it!
The Germans voted twice for Frau Merkel. Now enjoy her, love her, adore her and take all the crap which comes with the package!but please don't complain!
So, Brazen, somebody does not like Israel?s meddling in another nations commercial affairs and you call him Euro trash. Since Heinz is identifying himself openly as a German, I give you credit at least for not calling him Nazi trash. On the other hand I completely agree with Heinz in that it is totally absurd that this country of 5.5 Million Jews thinks it?s got the God given authority to interfere in the commercial affairs of another much larger, peaceful and important nation. Your aggressive style goes well with the aggressive style of the little country which you so defend.
"After heavy diplomatic pressures from the Israeli government..."
helps the present Iranian regime that guns down its own people, kill demonstrators and tortures them to death in prisons, sets up terrorist cells all over the world like Hizbollah in Latin America, hangs gays and tortures women, teaches pals suicide bombing and seeks to kill the future children through nuclear weapontry to help this regime is the most deplorable irresponsible act and will come back at the low souls who do this. Glad to hear that a German firm understood and backed away.russians and the chinese are way too greedy
I ask myself: Why was there no pressure on that company from inside Germany? - Because nobody cares. Angela Merkel makes the world think that relations between Germany and Israel were at its best. But the truth is that a new mood is growing in the country because people feel disappointed. While German Jews are respected, a majority has no positive thoughts about Israel: Voting for Lieberman and Netanyahu's concessions to the settlers as well as the (inappropriate) pressure on the Palestinian people as well as the misterious Gaza military operations and Israel's latest undermining of the freedom of speech legitimated thinking about Israel as an uncivilized, hateful country that is not interested in peace. While Merkel is greeting Israel's politicians, trade with Iran goes on. Some years ago most Germans felt allied with Israel. Now many Germans don't feel responsible to support Israel any more. Their protest is silence. They just don't care any more.
So Germany can't sell to Iran, but Germany sells Israel U-boats for its nuclear arsenal. Poor Germany, it's no wonder China is the top exporter now. China and Russia are smart: Muslim markets are well over a billion people. Thanks to the West's bias deals benefitting Israel, the West is losing billions and unemployment is rising.
The Germans are the losers here not the Iranians. China or Russia will be happy to pick up the project. I like to get a statistic on the reaction of the Germans.
During the international boycott of South Africa decades ago, Israel became South Africas best friend, selling them weapons and nuclear data in spite of the boycott. Israel is one of the worlds major weapons dealers, and they have sold weapons to many shady characters and regimes, including some that America struggled against in Central America. Israel, as in many things, sets the examples for doing business despite boycotts
Do you hate Germans also? They're a great people who did much to make this world a better place....quantum physics, jets, rockets, diesels.... Even the great German Jew scientists achieved much thanks to German schooling. Eurotrash? Go jump in the lake. Salaam/Shalom
Who is the loser? Not Iran that is for sure.
And the next article is from Der Spiegel...
You have fallen into a deep deep well. Get out and assert your independence.
Why should Israel pay compensation to those involved in making money out of murder. Germany made billions in profits during the war with slave labour. Most firms from Boss to Krupp were all involved in blood money. Time to be quiet you two.
Sure Axel, they have to be compensated, as well as Schaeffler's workers who have not been given a chance to finish human hair supply in their textile. Do you want me to continue this logical line? Or you say that it never happened?
You mean that germany cant carry out any back ally (illegal) trade for the selfish benefit of a few rotten aristocrates/politians. Oh were sorry we spoiled your little party heinz. By the way do you call saber rattling, and the call for the total destruction of a sovereign nation unfounded. Israel has all the right to protect the population of its country, wether eurotrash like yourself likes it or not!!!
they will be able to upgrade Iranian ports after they have finished in Syria. And of course Russia is against sanctions against Iran. Perhaps Netanyahu will embark on another secret visit to Moscow.
All these ridiculous sanctions only help to make Iran stronger and more self sufficient.
Should German workers be laid off because of the contract cancellation?
It is time to investigate Israeli weapons merchants, and their ties to overseas death dealers, particularly in the former Soviet Union and the United States. Decisions like this (canceled business deal) are good opportunities for Israeli sleuths to track their end of the problem. Just keep the government out of it.
I am confident that this interference in the inner German trade affairs by Israel will backfire since in times of economical crises and the need for contracts in Germany, many Germans will simply not accept such allegations that are mostly unfounded. No one should astonish when Germans look at Israel as a paria state and most dangerous to the World at all.
cheap charade
