Gadhafi to Arab MKs: I'm against Zionism, not Jews

Delegation describes meeting as 'wonderful', calls for inclusion of Israel's Arab sector in Arab world.

By Jack Khoury Tags: Libya Israeli Arab Israel news

Libyan President Moammar Gadhafi hosted a delegation of Israeli Arabs, including lawmakers, for a dinner meeting on Sunday evening.

During the meeting, Gadhafi stressed the importance with which he viewed the delegation's visit, and said: "We are not against Jews, but against Zionism."

This was the first time Israeli Arab MKs have visited this state in official capacity. Members of the delegation are not traveling on Israeli passports, but using special entry permits issued by Libyan authorities.

During their visit, the Israeli Arab delegation asked the Libyan leader to voice an initiative among Arab states to invite Israeli Arabs to visit, and to accept them as students in their various universities.

Ghadafi responded to the request as saying that Libya would be happy to enroll Israeli Arab students in its schools.

In a text message to Haaretz, MK Taleb Al-Sana described the meeting, which took place in a tent in the city of Surt, as "wonderful."

In his talks with Gadhafi, Al-Sana also compared Israel's occupation of Palestinian land to that of Italian colonialism in Libya, and said he hoped the prior would soon end as the latter did.

The Israeli Arab MK voiced criticism of Israel's settlement policy in the West Bank as "emptying the two-state solution of all meaning."

In response, Gadhafi told the MKs that a "human explosion is stronger than nuclear weapons", advising them to have as many children as possible.

The 40-member delegation to Libya included Knesset members Ahmed Tibi, Mohammed Barakeh, Chairman of the Higher Arab Monitoring Committee Mohammed Zidan, as well as journalists and religious leaders.

The visit raised a storm of criticism in Israel. MK David Rotem, who chairs the Knesset Constitution Committee, said the MKs must "decide where their loyalty lies."

A Zionist and A Jew: Are they different?
    • Janet

    • 09:19

What is the difference between the two? Jews are people who follow a particular religion, namely Judaism. Jews, like Muslims do not constitute a race -- nor a nationality. (Is this not the reason why there are European Jews, African Jews, Indian Jews, Arab Jews, etc?) A Zionist, on the other hand, is a follower of a particular ideology; he/she need not be a Jew: there are many Christian Zionists, for instance Joe Biden is one. Therefore, the distinction favoured by Gadhafy is very reasonable.

Only Arabs invited. No Jews. No Jewish State's passports. Ghdaffi: "(Arab) human explosion is stronger than nuclear weapons (against the Jewish State)". Arab Israeli Knesset members describe this racist fest as "WONDERFUL". So do the boring anti-Semites with their anti-Semitic wet dreams. Oh, I forgot: They are not against Jews, just "Zionism" which they declared equal to racism. The more it changes, the more it stays the same cynical, poisonous and genocidal anti-Semitism as ever. Would Haartez please be so kind and publish my post? This is my third attempt already !

During the meeting, Gadhafi stressed the importance with which he viewed the delegation's visit, and said: "We are not against Jews, but against Zionism." Dear Mr. Gadhafi, can you take out the heart of a sheep and keep the sheep alive? Even you could understand the above analogy! Zionism is the heart of the Jewish people, you take Zionism out, and the world will no longer have the ?people of the book?. And without the book the world will be left to barbarism, terrorism, ?and the meek will rule the land?, including your family, your country, and the rest of the world. The same applies for Jerusalem: You cannot divide a holy place and still maintained its holiness, not for Jews, Christians, and Muslims.

which completely overlook the nature of Gadhafi's statements. You may disagree with his views, but I stumbled across a very pragmatic commentary of his, in which he voices his views on the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. In it, he voices an opinion that the Palestinians and Jews should bury their differences and live in cooperative harmony as a single state. But I'm sure that none of YOU would agree with his reasoning for saying this, because you see- he points out the fact that Palestinians are descended from the Jews who remained 2000 years ago, and they are essentially brethren of today's Jews. Anti-Jew? No. Anti-Israel? No. Anti-Zionism? To some extent. Why? Because it advocates the dispossession of Palestinian rights and their land. Who said that old terrorists can't change their outlooks? After all, look at Begin and Sharon.

"Now that I*ve learned that Libya extricated its Jews" It actually began under ITALIAN rule, ITALIAN Law in Libya. The Jewish folk Libya expelled were likely to be allies of a hostile state. It is not un-common to either inter or expel such persons during war. The US, Australia et al expelled and interred Germans, Japanese, recently folk from Islamic countries. . "Now that the Jews are gathered in one place, he wants them mowed down." TwaddleSpeak 101. "I*m learning how the Arabs think: focusing on one goal on their mind only that is: wiping off the Jews" You learn by taking Hasbara classes?

of their own in his book. If I recall right the Book is called the "Green Book". He writes books in various colors. Back then he probably was the only Arab and Muslim to recognize that Israel has a right to exist. Now that I*ve learned that Libya extricated its Jews, it makes sense why he was of that opinion. Now that the Jews are gathered in one place, he wants them mowed down. I*m learning how the Arabs think: focusing on one goal on their mind only that is: wiping off the Jews. Israeli and the Western politicians should acknowledge this FACT and not expect the Muslims ever to compromise on it! It is against the teachings of the Koran, their highest authority they*re unwaveringly obedient to.

So Israeli Arabs have a lot of kids and the population exlosion pushes out Jews. What becomes of them? They become just like their poor brothers over the border. Anti- Zionism is the glue that binds Arab nationalism. Without it, they become Arab progressives against Arab fundimentalists and the fundimentalists will win hands down. Israeli Arabs need to realise they have the best of both worlds with the legal protection of a modern democracy. Their lives are far better within the borders of a "Zionist state" than outside. Gadhafi offers nothing for them except another form of tyrany

To me saying you are "against Zionism, but not Jews" is exactly like saying: "I'm not against Libyans, I'm just against their right to national self-determination." Why is it that Zionism is supposed to be such an ugly word when all it means is the movement to re-establish a Jewish homeland where the Jewish people have sovereignty, autonomy, national pride and can protect themselves? If history has taught us that ANY people need their own government/country/army to protect themselves from the majority society they are dispersed amongst, it is definitely the Jews. Anti-Zionism = thinly veiled anti-Semitism. Plain and simple. How were Jews treated in Libya, Mr. Gadhafi? How many left for Israel, Mr. Gadhafi? How many are left, Mr. Gadhafi?

After 62 years of an effort to have both Arabs and Jews living in the state of Israel living in harmony, the gap between the two seems to grow. This might be a signal to many Israelis that peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians is just impossible. More over it can hurt the Israeli Arabs survival. Without trust, how can anyone hire people who want to destroy his very being? Occupation is a natural result of a war. The winner end up establishing defensive posts as far away from their own home as they can. Only positive development of a relationships between the two may allow the removal of this defensive posts be it Military posts or civilian settelments. "Winning by demography" may sound logical yet, it will lower the quality of lives of both parents and children. The realization that getting along is a "learned situation" is a lot more promising and we can only hope that daily threats and demands will not replace it.

Let's be real here. Asking Israeli Arabs not to have feelings of connection towards other Arab countries is like telling American Jews not to have feelings of attachment to Israel. People complaining about this are either hypocritical or totally ignorant. On the other hand, if you against Zionism then you are also against the 2 state solution, since being an anti-Zionist means the Jews have no rights to ANY part of the historical Land of Israel. Both sides need to make changes...first and foremost by attempting to insure their respective leaders are adults...not children fixated on zero sum games or mythology.

I wonder if Ghadafi would be happy to host Israeli Jews in Lybian universities? Does the fact that he is against Zionism mean he is against the existence of the State of Israel? I would bet the answer to the 1st question is no and to the 2nd is yes.
