Foreign Ministry sources: Lieberman wants to maintain Israel-Turkey tensions

Turkey PM says Israel endangering world peace; Foreign Ministry: Turkey can't lecture us on morality.

By Barak Ravid Tags: Iran nuclear Israel news

Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman is trying to stop Defense Minister Ehud Barak from visiting to Turkey next week, in order to keep up the recent tensions between the two allied countries, Foreign Ministry sources said.

Barak was scheduled to leave for Turkey on Sunday to meet with his counterpart and the foreign minister there, in an attempt to improve deteriorating relations.

Tensions were renewed on Monday, after Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared that Israel was endangering world peace by using exaggerated force against the Palestinians, breaching Lebanon's air space and waters and for not revealing the details of its nuclear program.

Also Monday, Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon summoned the Turkish ambassador in Israel for clarification regarding a recent television drama depicting actors dressed as Shin Bet officers who kidnap babies.

Just three months ago, a similar diplomatic instance occurred between the two countries after Turkey aired the controversial television drama Ayrilik ("Separation") which featured actors dressed as Israeli soldiers killing Palestinian children.

During the meeting, Turkey's ambassador was seated in a low sofa, and facing him, in higher chairs, were Ayalon and two other officials - an arrangement carried out at Lieberman's orders.

A photo-op was held at the start of the meeting, during which Ayalon told the photographers in Hebrew: "Pay attention that he is sitting in a lower chair and we are in the higher ones, that there is only an Israeli flag on the table and that we are not smiling."

According to Foreign Ministry sources, Lieberman is now looking to "heat things up" before Barak's trip, so as to torpedo attempts to mend the tensions.

"We get the sense that Lieberman wants to heat things up before Barak's visit," a senior Foreign Ministry source said. "All of the recent activities were part of Lieberman's political agenda."

The Turkish government was expected to give a warm welcome to Barak, who alongside Labor Minister Benjamin Ben-Eliezer was looking to bring the allies' relations back to stability.

The Foreign Ministry sources surmised that Lieberman's efforts were aimed at preventing Turkey from resuming its role as mediator in Israel's peace talks with Syria.

Turkey PM: Israel is endangering world peace

The Foreign Ministry earlier Monday hit back at Erdogan over his remarks, saying: "Israel is careful to respect Turkey and seeks continued proper ties between the countries, but we expect reciprocity," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement, calling Erdogan's remarks an "unbridled tongue-lashing".

"The State of Israel has the full right to protect its citizens from the missiles and terror of Hamas and Hezbollah, and the Turks are the last who can preach morality to the State of Israel and the Israel Defense Forces."

At a press conference with visiting Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri, Erdogan called on the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council to pressure Israel over its nuclear program in the same way that the international community has been dealing with Iran.

"Israel never denied that it has nuclear weapons," said Erdogan. "In fact, it has admitted to such."

"Those who are cautioning Iran must also caution Israel," Erdogan declared. "If we fail to display a fair attitude in this region, the problems will hit not only the region, but will spread elsewhere as well. The unrest of the Middle East is the unrest of the world."

Until recently, Turkey had been a solid ally of Israel's from the Muslim world. However, Ankara has taken a stance against Israel over last year's war in the Gaza Strip, leading to a deterioration of ties.

"Is the Israeli government in favor of peace or not?" Erdogan said. "Gaza was bombed again yesterday. Why?... There were no rocket attacks."

Erdogan was referring to an Israel Air Force strike Sunday on a rocket-launching ground in central Gaza, where three Islamic Jihad militants posing to fire at Israel were killed. Approximately four mortar shells were also fired from Gaza toward the western Negev on Sunday.

"As Turkey, we can never remain silent in the face of Israel's attitude... They have disproportional capabilities and power and they use them," Erdogan said.

"They do not abide by UN resolutions," he added. They say they will do what they like. We can in no way approve of such an attitude."

During the press conference, Erdogan also declared that Ankara stood behind Beirut's efforts to join the United Nations Security Council.

Hariri termed Israel as an enemy of Lebanon and a danger to its stability.

The meeting between Erdogan and Hariri came after Lebanese army anti-aircraft guns on Monday fired on Israeli fighter jets violating Lebanese airspace in southern Lebanon, a Lebanese army source said.

"The army's anti-aircraft guns fired at four enemy Israeli planes that were overflying the Marjayoun area in southern Lebanon," the source who requested anonymity said.

"In the past two days the Israeli overflights over Lebanon have intensified, and Lebanon have advised the United Nation about the repeated and increased violations," said the source.

Israel argues that the overflights are necessary, despite their being in violation of UN Resolution 1701 that ended a devastating war in 2006 between Israel and the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah.

According to Israel, the overflights into areas near its border are to monitor what it describes as massive arms smuggling by Hezbollah, which is also a violation of the UN resolution.

Lebanon however is insisting that the UN stop the Israeli overflights.

You make a good point. To folIow your logic, Israel and Turkey shouldn't be so seriously estranged because there is more parallelism between the two countries than most Jews acknowledge. There are 64.7 million Turks persecuting 15.18 million Kurds. Israel can compete with that: there are 5.3 million Israelis persecuting 3.8 million Palestinians in the West Bank, Jerusalem and Gaza. A good deal of moral equivalency between the two countries, wouldn't you agree? More Jews should recognize that.

The issue is not about 5 million natives who happen to be Jewish (after they were brought in by force). The issue is that the existence of Israel itself violates the rights of millions of natives who are not born Jewish. What Hamas is asking for is not illegitimate, crazy or illogical. It is the position of millions of Arabs (not their non-representative governments that have been coerced to take positions that are not supported by a majority of their citizens). Arabs simply wish that the natives be given back their lands. You don't think this is a legitimate demand, we think it is. You think that, under circumstances that you pick on your own choosing, land theft is justified and that the victims must go on with their lives and make room for other "more worthy people". The 2 state solution benefits the colonists, the oppressors, it does not do justice to their victims. It will not bring natural long lasting peace.

Turkey should re-consider its relationship with the apartheid state of the Middle East. Israel is an oppressive theocracy that discriminate against natives born in the wrong religion. This colony that was forced on us by the use of violence and force will not last forever. Arabs are never going to give up on this.

A fervent Israeli supporter until the aftermath of the 1967 occupations became evident, I didn't need Palestinian propaganda to become an archenemy of Israeli propaganda and its human rights violations, and harsh and humiliating occupation of Palestinian territory. I pointed out 3 false Israel propaganda claims why US benefits from relations with Israel. 1. Only democracy in ME. A lie. So are Turkey and Lebanon. 2.Military bulwark in ME. Lie. Israeli participation would have destroyed coalition in Gulf war. You say, "so what?" Any equipment they supplied could have come from any sophisticated military force. "Hav Naps" were not used because of politics of using Israeli jointly designed weapon (with Boeing) against Arab nation. You're right. "So What?" We don't need them in any case. 3.In front line of war on terror. Lie. You agree. In recent 4-day period, Saudi Arabia killed 15 Al Qaeda members and they have over 200 in prison. How many Al Qaeda members has Israel killed or imprisoned?

Israel has always has world critics, you contend that it is at a unprecedented level. In the U.S. support for Israel seems to have remained constant. The propaganda machine for the Palestinians pushed into high gear in the mid 80's and has been highly effective. It has worked well on you. But to important points. 1) What other Democracy is in the ME? 2) In the Gulf War Israel was "asked"(and complied) to stay out...by the U.S. because it would have destroyed the coalition. So what? They still supplied many items (i.e. "Have Nap" air launched missile from B-52's, Israeli Pioneer pilotless drones for reconnaissance in the Gulf, Mind Plows, Night vision goggles, Mobile bridges etc.) 3)Now you state other countries...you name four.. are currently supplying more intel than Israel. About time! Wouldn't you say? Since the terrorists come from the very countries you name. Money for Israel. The military builds stuff here in the U.S. and it goes to Israel, Ron it's called jobs.

You are so right. Why does Israel need Turkey? Turkey, a NATO member, an associate member and candidate member of the EU, member of the Council of Europe, founding member of the OECD, member of the OSCE and a member of the European bloc of UN voters, is a great enemy to have. But Israel must hope that Turkey, and the rapidly growing list of nations who are tired of Israel's violations of international law doesn't say the same thing about Israel, "who needs them?" There are already an unprecedented number of campaigns for boycotts, divestment and sanctions against Israel. Israel doesnt need one more enemy. Israel can only say, "who needs them," so many times before it finds itself isolated in the international community. I am sure Israel would rather continue to try to starve 1.5 million Gazans than have another friend in the international forum.

Israel is a serious liability for the US, and few Americans realize it. The US has protected Israel for 60 years: in the UN with vetoes, guaranteed international loans and aid, last year, $3 billion. Since 1948, total cost to US is over $3 trillion. The US has sacrificed its own national interests in the ME for Israel's. And Muslim radicals attack us because of it. It's been a bad investment. US receives little from its unnatural relationship with Israel. Israel says US benefits because: (1) Israel is the only democracy in Middle East. False (2) Israel is military bulwark for US in ME. Irrelevant. In the Gulf War, Israeli participation would have destroyed the coalition. (3) Israel leads in the war on terrorism. False The best US allies on war against Al Qaeda and the Taliban are Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Kuwait and the Gulf States. Israel plays no role in that war: Hamas and Hezbollah don't attack the US. And the Arab states don't run espionage operations against the US.

    1. PKK Terrorists unlike Hamas, donot hide in populated areas. Howver many innocent Turkish citizens have been arrested and tortured bythe policesome even died in detention under questinable circumstances. I know one person in 1970ies in Izmir. 2. There was nevber a state of Kurdistan just like there was never a state called Palestine in history. 3. Turks came from Central Asia and took Anatolia from the Greeks. Are you planning to go back to Uygur land? 4. Today there are 5 million Jews in the ME most born there and know Israel as their origin. Ther are also Arab neighbors who deserve a decent life. The solution is to create 2 states side by side. First step is for both to start respecting each other. Most Israelis do but I am not sure about the Hamas.

No one needs that after meeting Lieberman. He's not addictive at all. Just the opposite, so I can't imagine the Turks tearing their hair and gnashing their teeth at this. The stupidity is that we're very short on friends and allies these days - Turkey is very essential to us in many more ways than just being ugly Israeli tourists in their country and we can't forever coast on helping them out after the earthquake. As with all those who we invite to get chummy with us like the ancient quote: "Those whom the gods wish to destroy they first make mad", so Turkey offered to help us and now we've made them mad at us. Perhaps we only ever want to destroy the friendships and alliances we make. With Lieberman we certainly succeeded.

If Israel then invites or encourages friendly countries to not be, that surely will be an easy option for them to take. Rather bizarre behaviour from Lieberman. What can his plan be?

Religious Fundamentalists, be they Christian, Islamic or Haredi, are people who have an inability to live in the present which compels them to inflict their vision of the past upon all of us. The answer is not opposite ignorance or one of them would eventually prevail. The answer is what humanity has learned over the thousands of years of history. That is our strength against them. That is what we have to use. The 'old testament' God of vengeance, murder and conquest is not the benevolent and compassionate God of Sufi Islam, nor the god of later Judaism, it is not the Christian God who gave his son so that men might live. Fundamentalists worship a sadistic, monstrous and inhumane God which demands blood sacrifice of non-believers (of all faiths). Fundamentalists worship a God created by them in their own image. Unlike the rest of us, humans, with human foibles and human decency, created in the image of God.

Mr. Lieberman seems to think the job of Israel's Foreign Minister is to alienate, insult and annoy as many nations and people as is possible. He also seems to think the important thing is gaining headlines in Israel for himself even if it means alienating, insulting and annoying the world. The thing he never seems to be concerned about is maintaining proper diplomatic relations with other nations and seeking to promote good will towards Israel amongst the world's nations and peoples. Were I one who wished the worst for Israel I would be most amused with Mr. Lieberman. I would be delighted every time he opened his mouth - which is to say every time he did harm to Israel. I find Mr. Lieberman's behavior destructive of Israel and appalling to watch. There are those who like his style and will no doubt conclude anyone who is appalled by Lieberman must be an anti-Semite and determined to destroy Israel. Rather it is Lieberman who is God's Gift to anti-Semite.

Turkey is just echoing world opinion. The world is turning against Israel not because people there are Jews, but because of how Israel acts. Bin Laden did not attack the US because of its religions or "way of life,' but because of the US's ACTIONS. Israel knows what it has to do to bring peace and stability to the ME, but judging by the attitudes of Israeli respondents, it is not going to happen. Israel thence becomes more and more isolated, and it is not because it is a "Jewish" state!

The transparent opportunism of Chris Linthwaite
    • Feh!

    • 01:48

Jihadists hate Israel and blow up airplanes. In conflating these facts to portray Israel as the sole reason for Islamist terrorism, Chris conveniently overlooks some other facts: Jihadists are commanded by the Koran to kill the infidel. Jihadists hate Christians, Hindus, atheists, agnostics...not just Jews. Jihadists blow up their fellow Muslims in much higher numbers than they blow up non-Muslims. Jihadists blow up people who live in countries which have nothing to do with Israel. Jihadists seek to establish a global caliphate (on a piece of land ever so slightly larger than Israel). If Muslims succeeded in destroying Israel, jihadist terrorism against Westerners would INCREASE, not magically disappear as Chris would have us believe. Jihadists would realize that terrorism works and the West is weak. Weakness invites aggression. Nothing would have a more galvanizing effect on jihadists than Israel's demise. They consider that the FIRST STEP on the path to the caliphate.

Can't rely on Turkey. They denied Israel during recent NATO exercises. On the ethical front, they are genocide commiters and also DENIERS. According to the Koran, murder is the second worst sin. Non-belief of God is first. The penalty for murder is execution. When the Saudi government beheads a convicted murder, do you suspect there has been some complaint about a crime made by another Muslim? There are constant complaints by Muslims against radical Muslim terrorism. Why do you think Saudi Arabia revoked the citizenship of Osama bin Laden? Why do you think that in a recent 4-day period Saudi Arabia killed 18 members of Al Qaeda? Why do they have over 200 hundred of them in prison? Why is the Pakistan armed forces attacking Al Qaeda and the Taliban in West Pakistan? What does the Afghanistan army do for a living? What, again, is the difference between Islam and other religions?

Turkish support for Hamas terrorism makes Barak's visit unwise
    • Realist
    • 12.01.10
    • 00:57

The latest statements by the Islamist government of Turkey are overtly supportive of the anti-Israel Axis led by the Iranian Dictatorship with its nuclear program and its proxy terrorist organizations Hamas and Hizbulla. The Foreign Minister is absolutely right to oppose this visit which can only give a false impression of Israeli weakness and encourage Turkey to continue its anti-Israel policy. There can be no justification for the Defence Minister of Israel to pay a friendly visit to an "ally" while that "ally" is supporting the terrorists who are firing rockets at Israeli communities. Barak needs to focus on his job of defending the country and not interfere with foreign relations which are the job of the Foreign Minister, Lieberman.

    • Eli
    • 12.01.10
    • 00:51

Explain to me how your post is not a spin on the legitimacy of terrorism against the USA by Muslims extremists. Natalie, Chris, your points make no sense for reasons to stop supporting Israel, if we say that Democracy and strong ones will not tolerate threats and terrorism. More so your logic is so incredibly faulty that with it it is so easy to construe arguments that are equally false and morally reprehensible. For example one could easily construe an argument against Muslims Americans, Muslim immigration and movement of persons from Muslim states to the USA. This would be an incorrect argument but nevertheless your logic works perfect. We could say that the aforesaid persons are a liability to our Security. or we could say they are a liability to time, becuase of "their" actions we now must wait in line at airports so why not ban them from moving inside of or entering the USA? Why? because this logic misses the point, instead of attacking the issue it finds a scapegoat.

You have hit upon a brilliant idea. Break all relations with Turkey. Support Kurdish aspirations, give them aid, agitate among them to overthrow their masters, campaign internationally for their independence, and perhaps sign an oil deal, although there is no readily observable way for Israel to get oil out of any Kurdish lands. The Palestinians will support your efforts, because they are smart enough to know such actions will finish the job of completely of isolating Israel from the world community. Turkey, a NATO member, an associate member and candidate of the EU, member of the Council of Europe, founding member of the OECD, member of the OSCE and a member of the European bloc of UN voters, is a great enemy to have. When Israel begins to collapse, totally isolated by boycotts, divestments and sanctions, undoubtedly the Kurds will rush to the aid of Israel. The cry, "Long Live Lieberman," will replace "Allahu Akbar" among the Palestinians.

But, we have seem way to much of Israel's whining and double talk. They force the world to turn it's attention to a country that doesn't even have nukes.Meanwhile Israel's nukes ranks right up there. Why should Israelis whine and complain about nukes, when they are the only country in the ME to have nukes and banned weapons. Why do the world allow Israel to decieved them as much as they do. They talk about peace, then they continue to build settlements on stolen land. It is clear, if Israel's nukes are not addressed also, then the US and Britain should not be forcing Iran to come clean. Remember there are terrorists in Israel also,Iran is not the only country to have crazy people. Turkey good for you for speaking up.

You obviously have a very short memory. IN 2006 Hizbollah launched katyushas into Israel in an unprovoked attack and kidnapped Israeli civilians. That was the reason for disallowing them under 1701. Whether they've fired them (yet) is immaterial. I'm shocked that you would only take the anti-Israel side. No, I'm not. Oh, and by the way, it's funny how you only criticize Israel over tv shows. It's just another example of your pathetic attempts to single Israel out. American support of Israel is a liability. Osama Bin Laden himself said that American support of Israel was a major motivator in the 9/11 attacks. Israel has used American weapons to kill many hundreds of innocent civilians. America has supplied unlimited political support in the UN. Israel is still expanding outside its borders with no end in sight. America is still supporting this, financially, militarily, and politically. I suggest you give Bobby Kennedy a rest and focus on 21st century issues.

It was only because the IAF killed the three terrorists just before they fired their missiles that this Islamist liar is able to claim that "there was no rocket attack". If Turkey is going to continue to support Hamas terrorists Israel should think about starting to repay the compliment by helping the PKK. Maybe a few missile attacks in Ankara will wipe the bloodthirsty smile off ErDOGan's ugly face.

Although Terrorism cannot be justified under any circumstances. The fact is the West's continued support of Israel masakes us targets of radicalised young moslems who would do unspeakable things in the name of Islam to protect their 'muslim brothers' from Israeli aggression and the West's support of that aggression. Support for Israel by the west is getting it's citizens killed, and it's citizens are beginning to realise this. Blind support for Israel by western governments is no longer a vote winner it is a vote loser. Israel's isolation will only increase in the future.

During 2009 the Turkish military forces pounded the Kandil mountain and other mountains in the south east of Turkey as well as some in northern Iraq using F16s and tanks that were modernized and modified in Israel against Kurdish rebels who are armed only with Kalashnikov or AK47 guns and home made molotov koktails and some IEDs. Not to mention the Israeli made Heron's that were delivered early 2009 with Israeli staff to operate them until Turkish staff would be trained. Proportional force does not win a war. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan made the usual false statements. "endangering world peace" If Israel disappeared tomorrow "world peace" would still be a problem. Remember most conflicts in the world today involve Islam. The Iraq/Iran war, the Iraq/Kuwaiti war, Pakistan/India over Kashmir, Warlords in Somalia, Turkish/Kurdish conflicts, Iran/Kurdish conflicts etc. all have nothing to do with Israel. "Those who are cautioning Iran must also caution Israel," Regarding nuke capabilities. Israel unlike Iran doesn't sponsor worldwide terrorism. Israel doesn't threaten to "wipe countries off the map". "There were no rocket attacks." At least 20 rockets were fired at Israel this week. And as the article states: " where three Islamic Jihad militants posing to fire at Israel were killed. Approximately four mortar shells were also fired from Gaza toward the western Negev on Sunday." What? Israel should wait till they launch the rockets or mortars first.

regardless of the reasons. The fact is Israel is preparing the ground for another invasion of Lebanon. Whatever Hezbollah is alleged to have in Southern Lebanon as long as it is not fired at Israel then there is no problem. Same with bombs planted a kilometre from the border with Israel. Israel complains that the Goldstone Report is an attack on it's ability to defend itself. Likewise Israel is attempting to manipulate UN1701 to prevent Lebanon from defending itself. And since when has Israel had the right to censor other soveriegn country's television programmes. Not only in Turkey but increasingly in the United Kingdom with repeated attempts by a group based in Jerusalem to censor the British Broadcasting Company. I won't even mention attempts by the Israeli government to change English law to favour Israelis.

Ataturk was from the Balkans and he knew how hatreds flared up. He wanted Turkey to keep at peace and not have wars with its neighbors as in the Balkans. In the Balkans, I think feudal families fought among themselves; and those people have been fighting with each other ever since. The many different groups in Lebanon can sometimes be a problem causing fighting; however, making Turkey for the Turks did not solve Turkey's problems either. Somewhere there is a solution - but Turkey, Israel, Lebanon have to find it. They haven't found it yet.

This idiot is sounding more and more like his buddy Ahmadinejad with his lies and hypocrisy! Turkey is about to lose all its chances to join the EU. Sarkozy was right all along: You can not trust a country run by islamists.

Erdogan is getting crazier and crazier faster. HE IS THE REAL DANGER NOW, as all madmen are, such as Ahmadinedjad, his new friend. And Hariri is just a typical Lebanese a... licker, and will go with the wind, just like Dumblat the mad Lebanese Druze chief; let them both embrace their Hizbolah brothers for now and Erdogan kiss Hamastan and hope they all stab each other in the back as they know best to do........especially Erdogan now. Soon, Erdogan will anounce his mariage to Hugo Chavez and Gadafi....what Carnival world we'd live in....... And if Turkey join the E.U., God help us all. Whatch out the Turkish army reinforcements in Cyprus and soon to be excuses for showing their muscles to Greece....... Guess what is Erdogan's problem ? Yes guess, because if I write it, Haaretz wont' print it. What a disappointment Erdogan turns out to be. What a pity he is moving toward you know who, I am trying hard to remain politically correct here, but how can we and be genuine ?

I congratulate Turkey's resolve to state facts concerning Israel's conduct. More and more nations and citizens are beginning to voice their criticism of Israel--even in the US. Hopefully, within a few years, the BDS movement will be mainstream throughout the world.

Erdogan is finally revealing Turkey's true colors--they will fall into the Moslem extremist camp, just like all the other Moslem nations eventually. Their governments, which are dysfunctional and corrupt, will never give their people any economic or political horizon, and so they will drift to extremism and religious fanaticism. Nation-building doesn't work with these people--they aren't capable of it.

    Israel Should Sign the NPT

If Israeel wants to be a modern nation and if Israel wants security in its own region of the world it must start acting modern and progressive. One obvious step would be signing the NPT treaty and let inspectors monitor the Israeli nuclear stockpile. I don't know why Israel is so worried about Iran getting the "the bomb", since Israel already has many. In Iran's eyes, Israel is the threat to the region. Wake up, Israel its the 21st Century get modern and join your regional neighbors against the outside threat of Iran.

"There were no rocket attacks"? - Blatant Liar, Erdogan puppet

Why is he lying? We still have the holes in the ground from the mortars that were fired from Gaza. As for Israel being disproportionate - maybe Israel should start manufacturing crude drainpipes with rocket fuel and exlosive warheads and jsut fire them at random into Gaza. Then that will be proportionate, won't it?

Sheesh, if it isn't the two burnt pots calling the kettle black! I don't hear him complaining when Jews are gunned down, or for that matter copts in Egypt. But of course, IDF always uses "exaggerated force". He should be asking if the PA is in favor of peace or not (Hint: the answer is No)
