While not a 'red' fruit, the Hebrew word for orange was quite controversial in its day, provoking cries of cultural Bolshevism from famed poet Shaul Tchernichovsky.
From a young age, we are told never to compare apples with oranges. But in Israel we do just that when use the word for the commonplace orange, tapuz. In the day, the word was remarkably controversial.
