Word of the Day / Rahit: Making a word part of the furniture
When a word for furniture was needed, a long-forgotten synonym for crossbeam was drafted from the Bible.
The Hebrew word for furniture is rahit (ra-HEET), often found in its plural form, rehitim. Either way, the term has only been in wide use for around a hundred years. In the Bible, rahit appears but once: “The beams of our houses are cedars, and our panels are cypresses.” (Song of Songs 1:17)
