If anything can be learned from the hollow letter Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent on Sunday to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, it is that Kadima's unexpected entry into the coalition probably won't bring about any breakthrough in negotiations over a permanent status agreement in the territories.

Akiva Eldar is absolutely correct: Mofaz hardly seems to fit the mold of the great savior who will push his coalition-partner Netanyahu towards suddenly making an about-face and embracing renewed, meaningful peace-negotiations with all the compromises and concessions incumbent on that process. But, of course, we are more than willing to be pleasantly surprised, should a breakthrough actually occur - against all indications and expectations.
thank you
