EU: Hezbollah may be ready to become political movement

Spanish representative to European parliament says group conditioned change on end to Israeli 'occupation.'

By DPA

Hezbollah would be ready to transform its armed resistance into a political movement, if all occupied Lebanese territories were freed, a Spanish representative to the European parliament said on Sunday.

"One of the positive elements of our meetings with Hezbollah was that they declare that they would like to become a political movement ... when the occupation of Lebanese land ends," David Hammerstein told reporters at the end of a three-day visit by an EU delegation to Lebanon.

"When asked when the occupation ends, they said clearly the 'Shebaa Farms'," Hammerstein added. "We all clearly support such an idea of placing Shebaa under the temporary jurisdiction of the United Nations and urge Syria and Israel to cooperate with this idea which will end the tension on the borders between Lebanon and Israel."

Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora has requested United States and European Union help in pressuring Israel to withdraw from Shebaa, but so far no action has been taken.

This inactivity is putting pressure on the government, as UN Security Council Resolution 1559 calls for the disarmament of all armed Lebanese groups, including Hezbollah.

The disputed Shebaa territory is a 25-square-kilometer region the mountainous region between Lebanon, Syria and Israel.

While Lebanon lays claim to the territory, the UN supports Israel's contention that it withdrew fully from Lebanon in 2000, and that the territory is part of the Golan Heights.

The damn Israelis are OCCUPYING it, Michael. It isn't their land, no matter how many ways you look at it. Israel can vacate it on condition that the UN moves in, and say ABSOLUTELY that the moment a rocket is fired from it the IDF will lay waste to the area. Nothing in that implies that the Israeli government is recognizing Lebanese sovereignty of the Shebaa Farms. Or, for that matter, Syrian sovereignty of it. But for crying out loud! You zionists sit your Big Fat Ass on a bit of territory that isn't yours, and you conclude "hmmm, quite comfortable, really..." You are OCCUPYING land. Two other nations claim it for themselves, and both are angry with YOU for OCCUPYING it. Get the Hell out of it and let them both fight each other over it, rather than bringing grief to YOU. After all, are you really suggesting that the Syrians and the Lebanese aren't going to go at each other like Junkyard Dogs to get a piece of that land? It's not as if they are buddies.

#1 Slibovitz - UN is looking into Shebaa again per UNSC 1701

Slibovitz, the UN is not as sure as you are that they have decided the border. The UN has gone back and re-mapped the area based upon maps and land titles they didn't have time to review as Israel rushed out of Lebanon in 2000. UNSC 1701 gives the UN the authority to unilaterally change the border that they unilaterally set back in 2000. The only input Israel has on the matter is as a "Liasion" to be conferred with, but with no decision making role. It is far from the done deal that you imply it is. And if the dispute is between Lebanon and Syria as you say, then Israel should be more than happy to get the heck out of the way and let UN troops do their job and stand between them in Shabaa.

Hezbollah IS a political movement that is integrated into Lebanon political system. They have members in Lebanese Parliement. Hezbollah members are part of Lebanon Civil Society. They just rejected to become the object of Israel occupation, therefore they created a resistance movement, being called as MILITIA/PARAMILITARY in the WEST. When Israel occupation ended, those military wings of Hezbollah will be irrelevant, they will be dismissed FOREVER. No doubt.

...for the EU's double standards: When it comes to Israel, the EU demands to keep to each and every single full stop and comma of UN-decisions. But when it comes to Arab countries and terrorist groups, suddenly UN-decisions (like the one that Shebaa belongs to Syria and not to Lebanon) are not longer this important, and the EU is ready to look the other way.

You look at a political map and think you know everything. Let me suggest that you look at a topographical map. Shebaa Farms is high ground between the three countries. Hizbollah wants it so that it gives them an excellent vantage point from which to shoot katyushas into the Galilee.

Hezbollah is armed by Iran. Iran smuggles to Syria, which in turn smuggles to hezbollah fighters in Lebanon. The world must stand together to fight terrorism, not just bow down and surrender. What in the hell is wrong with you people. Hezbollah will never just lay down their arms, unless they are dealt a major blow. The only way to crush hezbollah is to deal with Iran. Now Iran is on the path to getting nuclear weapons to threaten the entire region. If Iran is allowed to continue, they will keep supporting terrorist attacks all around the Middle East. To stop hezbollah, you must deal with the countries that support them. This means Iran and Syria. Fight radical Islamic terrorism.

For negotiating with a genocidal terrorist organization that has vowed to eliminate the state of Israel and the Jewish people. As usual, they will go millions miles to pick up any ambivalent crumbs of unofficial statements that these organizations make to give the impression that they are not so extreme. While at the same time they will conveniently ignore all the official hatred and violent threats coming out of the snake head Natzyralla and his friends. Israel should immediately reciprocate and send a delegate to talk to the most extreme Basque organization and get some unofficial ambivalent statements regarding Spain.

That is funny. A terrorist organization that currently holds Israeli hostages and is responsible for deaths of hundreds of people since its organization is looking to be a recognized entity, IF Israel gives in to all its demands. And, that will mean what? Does it mean it will stop the terror, will release the hostages and will live in harmony with the Israelis? BTW, Johnboy, just what land does Israel hold that isn't held due to Arab hostility? What land has it annexed and what land is occupied in order to secure the safety of the Israelis? What did Israel gain by handing over Gaza to the Arab Palestinians?

S:"It is just a smokescreen for continuing violent Hezbollah activities in violation of multiple UN Security Council Resolutions." Then Israel should withdraw from the Shebaa Farms area and call Hezbollah's bluff. It is 25 square kilometers. Withdrawing from it ain't gonna cause Israel any pain. What reason does Israel have for keeping it, other than it is land and, well, Israel does kinda seem like it LIKES the idea of keeping a hold of Other People's Land.

    Shebaa Farms

    • 16.04.07
    • 04:08

According the UN, the Shebaa Farms area is part of the Syrian Golan Heights. The UN has certified that Israel does not occupy a single square inch of Lenabon in a Security Council Resolution, the highest level of international certification. The UN has previously stated that the Shebaa Farms dispute is between Lebanon and Syria, not between Lebanon and Israel. It is just a smokescreen for continuing violent Hezbollah activities in violation of multiple UN Security Council Resolutions.
