The body of a 72-year-old man was discovered by police in his Bat Yam apartment on Saturday.
Investigators initially suspect the man's wife stabbed him to death, yet pathological reports indicated that the man most likely committed suicide. Magen David Adom medical crews who tended to the body in the man's apartment pronounced him dead shortly afterwards.
The woman called the police to her home at around 10:00 A.M. on Saturday. Officers found the man with no sign of life, having suffered numerous stab wounds. Suspecting the wife of involvement in the murder, police escorted her to the Ayalon District Police headquarters where they subjected her to questioning.
"At 9:40 the wife of the deceased called and reported that her husband was on the floor with stab wounds near his heart," Commander Yisrael Tal told Haaretz. "We are now investigating what exactly happened in the apartment. All possibilities are being looked at, including murder. We have detained the wife for questioning on such a suspicion, but all the possibilities are being examined."
Tal said that the man's wife sounded highly emotional when the officers reached the apartment, and that she was in a state of shock. There were no signs of a break-in at the third-floor apartment.
Neighbors said the couple led a quiet lifestyle and they did not recall any unusual incidents that would suggest domestic strife.
