Egyptian paper: Mossad chief is 'Israel's superman'

Al-Ahram calls Meir Dagan the 'brains' behind last week's assassination of an Iranian nuclear scientist.

By Jack Khoury Tags: Israel Mossad Israel news

The Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram claimed on Saturday that the head of Israel's Mossad, Meir Dagan, is "Israel's superman" for successfully thwarting the Iranian nuclear program.

The article in Al-Ahram, written by the paper's analyst for Palestinian affairs Ashraf Abu al-Haul, claimed that Dagan is the "brains" behind last week's assassination of an Iranian nuclear scientist.

"Surely the Iranians know who stands behind the assassination of the Iranian nuclear scientist Massoud Ali Mohammadi in Tehran last Tuesday. Any Iranian official understands that the magic word is 'Dagan'," the article read.

Abu al-Haul claims that "without Dagan, the Iranian nuclear program would have been complete years ago. Nevertheless, the director of the Israeli Mossad, whose name is mostly unknown, works away from the limelight and the eyes of the media."

According to al-Haul, in the past seven years Dagan was able to successfully hinder the Iranian nuclear program. "Whoever follows Israeli domestic politics understands that the head of the Mossad, who was appointed to his post in September 2002, was able to accomplish feats no man can describe. From the Iranian issue and limiting the military force of the Syrian army to facing Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Islamic Jihad," the article read.

Al-Haul also writes in the article that Netanyahu explained his decision to extend Dagan's term with the claim that Israel was facing serious threats that required the Mossad head to continue in his post, without appointing a successor.

48 Persian Kitty, the only side that really benefited from the killing was the Israel side. It was an operation that was designed for intimidation, but poorly thought out. An Israeli signature. Not 100% certain, but 95%. #51 Mark Lincoln, for Israel, 'winning' has two objectives. The first is to secure political possession of the land of Israel. The second is maintenance of the influence (mainly economic) that allows it to weather storms. So far it has had enough support from abroad to maintain itself. That is running out. The only way Israel can buy time is to up the ante in the terror war (and get more allies) or to make peace. It is trying to escalate the 'war on terror' through proxy, but Israeli leaders seem to not understand where that is leading. The war on terror does not end in a good place for Israel, unless it ends soon.

    Define 'win'
    • Mark Lincoln
    • 17.01.10
    • 22:58

There seems to be a lack of understanding over what constitutes victory - wining - in war. One wins when one achieves the goals for which the war is entered. If one is attacked, repulses the attack and does not lose ground then it is easy to see that one has 'won' as the goal was to survive intact. The enemy has 'lost' because it failed to achieve it's objectives. So victory is not just kicking the crap out of someone. Victory is achieving one's goals or thwarting an opponent from achieving it's goals. Engaging in massive warfare without achieving one's goals is losing no matter how much of the opponent's land is destroyed or how many of one's opponents are killed. Americans on the right like to pretend we 'won' in Vietnam because we inflicted far heavier casualties on the VC and NVA that we suffered. Never mind that we did not end up with the regime we backed in control of the country. . . Did Israel destroy Hamas in the Second :Lebanon War? Did Lebanon turn on Hizbollah?

What an idiot! The professor was a physicist NOT a nuclear physicist. he had no connection to the nuclear program thus of no high importance for the mossad to have him assassinated in of all places TEHRAN. There are a lot more relevent and pertinent figures for the mossad to focus if it wanted to. As I posted before, this was done by the IRGC intel security who also assassinated mousavi's nephew. This particular entity is heavily influenced by khamenei's son mojtaba. The professor was pro Green and this was done as a warning to the green 'leaders'. Btw, the triggerman was actually a lebanese hezbollah member who goes by the pseudonym "abu nasser". We know who he is and have him on vid. The next big showdown is Feb 11th....we are here, we are countless...and we are GREEN!

"Thus the 2006 Lebanon war was a failure for Israel" In the end, it doesn't matter who you or I think won that Lebanese war. If you like, we can congratulate the leaders and heroes of Hezbollah's courageous army on their stunning victory over Israel. I just want to know why these same heroes did absolutely nothing to follow up their great victory by not doing a thing to help their colleagues in Gaza in December 2009.

It used to be viewed as one of the 'ethical' spy agencies. Even killing a few innocent people didn't much tarnish its image. But more and more the only positive references to it are hack references. That article does not seem available in the English Al-Ahram, but I'm guessing it does not have the effect suggested by some.

It seems to me that the argument that Israel would have no reason to risk intel assets to whack a guy who was innocuous is a legitimate suggestion. I guess that the Haaretz censor feels that argument risks national security. The Egyptian article strikes me as blatant propaganda intended to inflame rather than enlighten. But since the obvious argument that Israel would be unlikely to risk assets in place in Iran to whack a guy who was not part of the Iranian nuclear program appears to be unmentionable. . . Then perhaps I was wrong about the Egyptian article. As silly as it seems, Haaretz seems to want us to believe it is true.

Marc: Israel did NOT lose the war in Lebanon. Israel could have inflicted 1000 times more damages to Lebanon in a time equal to 1/1000 of what it took to teach your beloved hezbollah some lesson. Just think how easily and quickly Israel can knock the power plants in Lebanon. Those who went to Entebbe cannot neutralize all of them in 90 minutes? Those who used to dismantle entire radars in the Sinai before you were born cannot teach more lessons to your beloved islamic morons? Use your brains if you have any! Before hezbollah and lebanon and Marc there was ISrael. During hezbollah and lebanon and Marc there is Israel. After hezbollah and lebanon and Marc there will be Israel. Israel IS REAL!

Same as the saying goes 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder"....victors of war are explained in the aftermath. The poor folks in Lebanon had their infrastructure decimated. Even Nasrallah had to admit that he did not think the IDF would smash into Lebanon as they did. Now Nasrallah hides in some bunker and the Lebanese people are wary of his intentions.

losing or winning can only be judged by the result of the israeli operation .I have news for you today more then ever the hizballa do not send katusha missiles to the north of israel and they do not attemp to cross the border kidnapping israeli soldiers or civilians and the price tag of such actions is known to all lebanesse who will not support hizballa provocations agaist israel.Even among the shia in the south, not oppenly but among themselves they do not like the result of that war.In arabic the biggest swear word you can say to a person is may your house be destroyed the house mean the enlarged familly, many shia had their house lost and that is their reality they have to live after the hizballa campaign. so who lost and who won ,no winners, big lossers south lebanon shia, and nasralla is the cause for that loss

He had signed open letters opposing Khamenei/Ahmadinejad crackdown on students, he participated in street demonstrations. A lot of Iranians are saying he was assassinated by Iranian regime's own death squads to scare other scientists.

You are not lebanese or at least you do not live there. Also don't forget, Success depends on your objectives. Hezbollah objective was to capture soldiers, survive, and trade them for prisoners with Israel. They succeeded in that. Israel's objectives, both in Lebanon and Gaza, was to retrieve kidnapped soldiers and crush or demoralize Hezbollah and Hamas. They did not retrieve their soldiers, and both Hezbollah and Hamas grew stronger after that war. Thus the 2006 Lebanon war was a failure for Israel. Even though Lebanon suffered much more than Israel.

Well the idiot should have known seeing how strongly Israel responded to Gazan acts of war shortly before that. Anyhow, Hezbollah's greatest defense is their integration into their civilian population that they bind to their offensive weapons as reactive armor; when Israel strikes back and invariably cause some civilian casualties Nasrallah counts on quick world opinion denouncing Israel, where they were mostly silent when Israeli civilians were first targeted to initiate the fight. Visit Beirut and listen to the sounds of the nightly party where its sewer rats can now entertain themselves in what once was Nasrallah's Forbidden City that even Lebanon's president couldn't previously enter.
