Egyptian officials on Sunday said border guards have wounded an African migrant woman and arrested 18 men from Ethiopia and Eritrea trying to infiltrate into Israel.

Security and medical officials said border guards tried to stop the woman from crossing early Sunday south of the Rafah border crossing.

They said the guards first fired warning shots in the air but then shot her in the arm when she refused to surrender.

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media, said the woman was taken to a hospital.

Many migrants seeking political asylum and jobs try to cross into Israel with the help of Bedouin traffickers.
