Egypt media group agrees on massive Israel boycott

Al-Ahram group, considered most powerful press syndicate in Egypt, bans meeting, interviewing Israelis.

By Jack Khoury Tags: Egypt Israel news

The London-based Arabic-language daily A Sharq al Awsat reported Monday that the board of directors of the powerful Egyptian media group Al-Ahram had decided to boycott Israel and Israelis of all positions.

The Al-Ahram group is considered the most powerful media body in Egypt. Al-Ahram publishes newspapers considered to be the official mouthpiece of the Egyptian government.

The boycott, approved by a majority of nine board members over six following a heated debate, includes a ban on meeting with and interviewing Israelis, and a ban on participation in events (seminars, conferences, lectures) in which Israelis are taking part.

According to the report, the board of directors also banned Israelis from entering the building housing the Al-Ahram offices. The ban includes Israeli diplomats stationed in Egypt.

During the same meeting, it was decided to take action on the matter of Dr. Hala Moustafa, the editor of Al-Ahram's Democracy magazine, after she stirred anger and disapproval earlier this month when she met with Israeli ambassador Shalom Cohen.

A statement regarding the board's decision has been personally delivered to Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

A senior editor at the Al-Ahram daily said that the Al-Ahram group has always been a supporter of dialogue, and an opponent of discrimination, including discrimination against Israel, but the fact that Israel has "gone against peace and elected an extremist government which opposes peace and supports killing and destruction" had changed the group's outlook.

He added that the group will work toward preventing "normalization" and contact with the Israelis until the achievement of a lasting and just peace, "which means Israel's withdrawal from the occupied territories."

Dr. Moustafa said Monday that she had yet to receive any notice regarding the board's decision. However, it is believed that an investigation against her will begin Tuesday. Moustafa said that she will defend her stance and argue that Israel and Egypt signed a peace treaty and as such, a meeting with Israel's ambassador is not a violation of Egyptian law.

a nominal peace between governments... NOT between peoples. which is why the arab peace iniative lists the conditions that it does, and it's why they refuse to consider "negotiating" ANY of them. their intent is for REAL "peace"; not just an agreement between governments. what they envision is essentially a unified neighborhood of nations that includes israel, which not only will lead to a strong front against islamic extremism(which is a threat to them, too), but will also eventually lead to cultural and economic interaction, mutual cooperation, trade, tourism, etc. but they realize that in order for this to happen, the issues that inflame regional antagonism towards israel need to removed in order for "peace" with israel to be accepted by their "people"...and you can't really have peace and normalized relations between nations unless its embraced by the people. without that, all you have is a peace on paper between governments...like the one with egypt.

Egypt, A primitive country with a tiny strata of educated people who hold on to power for over 50 years. Just see Mubarak! Do you think he'll ever relinquish his seat? What is even worse,he wants to pass the sceptre over to his son! A feudal-like system. Not unlike the regime of Hafez Assad who passed the reins of government to his son. (We remember how Mubarak mocked the methods of Hafez Assad,& said such a thing cannot happen in Egypt) Ha! Ha! Ha! It goes without saying, there's no such thing as free elections in ANy Arab country. See Iran. Only recently. And Israel has to deal with these lying & corrupted regimes! They know no other way.

Israel and many in the world community argued that no one should talk to Hamas until it jumps through several hoops and show that it wants peace with Israel. The same should be done with the extremists running Israel's government. Until they declare that they are willing to leave the occupied territories, including occupied East Jerusalem, they should be boycotted by all Arabs

Al Ahram is a STATE CONTROLLED paper but private papers are free to write what they want as long as you don't call people names. The only bias we have in our media is that we overlook the previous mentioned rule when it comes to israel and israelis. And how do you judge our freedom of press? Do you know Arabic? Do you read Egyptian news papers? And finally, what is there to talk about? Right and wrong are clear and you knowingly justify wrong. Enough said.

This didn't come after the Gaza operation, during which Egypt sealed its border near-hermetically against its Arab brethren. This came after "enlightened" Mr. Housny, the former Egyptian Censor, antisemite, and book burner was not elected as UNESCO chief, obviously a Jewish-Israeli conspiracy. And, strange as though it may seem in the UK, boycotting Israel is more difficult than you think. For a journalist, it's actually quite stupid. Guess I have to cancel my Al-Ahram abo now.,.

of boycotting Israel knows no bounds. No doubt this won't matter and Israelis will wheel out the same old excuses merely dismissing it as a holocaust denial, anti semitism, we should never have signed a peace treaty with Egypt Israel supporters will then point out that they aren't boycotting Sudan, Zimbabwe. North Korea or Iran without understanding the irony of their position. Placing Israel with such enlightened regimes. But one thing for sure the calls for boycotting Israel are becoming louder and more common since Operation Cast Lead. It can even be said it is even becoming an acceptable form of protest.
