Egypt: Israel West Bank heritage list risks peace

Egypt FM says Cairo does not recognize Israeli actions in the Cave of the Patriarchs, al-Aqsa mosque.

Israel's move to add two ancient tombs in the West Bank to its list of national heritage sites is a "threat to peace," Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit said Tuesday.

Israel's decision last week to add the Tomb of the Patriarchs, in the West Bank city of Hebron, and the Tomb of Rachel, in the West Bank city of Bethlehem, has met with a storm of regional protests.

"Egypt and Turkey do not recognize any Israeli actions in the tomb of Abraham or the al-Aqsa mosque," Abul-Gheit said in a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart, Ahmet Davutoglu, in Cairo.

"Israeli actions in Jerusalem, and its adding of the Haram al- Ibrahimi to the Israeli heritage list are a threat to peace," he said.

Tradition has it that the patriarch Abraham, revered by Muslims, Jews and Christians alike, is buried at the site in Hebron. A mosque stands at the site, known in Arabic as the Haram al-Ibrahimi.

Muslims know the site reputed to be the burial site of Rachel, wife of the biblical patriarch Jacob, as the Bilal mosque.

Davutoglu said that his country would follow the issue of the holy sites in the West Bank closely, out of a concern for maintaining peace in the Middle East.

Earlier on Tuesday, Davutoglu had met with Egyptian President Hosny Mubarak in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

Egypt and Turkey are the largest of the countries in the region that have diplomatic ties with Israel,

Mark of Lewiston, there is a very simple reason why ALL American Jews are subjects of Israel. They have not gotten over their wish that Israel exist, and there fore have not been able to accept the idea that Israel and they are different. American Jews have become unwilling hostages of the Israeli right. Even though most American Jews vote left, they are unwilling to tell the Israeli right that they disagree with them. So Israelis believe AIPAC and the republican right that American Jews are right wing extremists. Why should they think different? Are the most right wing extremist of Settlers American?

If Turkey and Eygpt would like to heritage those sites we are trying to preserve them not cash in on the beauty. It will make peace since so many fight over them. What would your restrictions be. If not what if a terrorist group gets a hold of them. How can we preserve your peoples heritage. You want to obstruct every good deed everyone does thinking someone wants it to do what with. We make peace offer not war and you want to be upset. We are trying very hard to stop the hate. For instance I read two articles about the blockades in Gaza and how the world blames Israel except we are providing for our own. Here is the USA screaming make blockades here is everyone else trying to open eyes and keep the world peaceful. We are wanting peace and neutrality. We were once friends. Why would we hurt your heritage sites.Look up helping hand organizations around the world. Religion doesnt matter to most we are one people on one planet cooexisting from day to day with the same worries.Rankoo-Karoon

How dare anyone tell us that we cant visit maarat hamachpelah or kever Rachel. Just because you put an arabic word onto a Jewish Living Historical site doesnt make it arab. This is my mind is a good enough reason for Israelis to have massive rallys. There is no room for negotiations on this point. They do not belong to anyone other than the Jewish people and state. It is "Haram and aieb" that the arabs think that they have any claim at all to these places." Funny thing tho. Israel did it to all those Palestinian towns. Slapped jewish names on them. Seems to work for the Jews so why shouldnt it work for the arabs? When will you zionists get it that you guys are no better than these Islamic radicals? Stop trying to belittle them when you are both at the same level! You are no better than they are. Hypocrite! Absolutely amazing.

the became as fools" The reason why Israel needs to "claim" those sites can be illustrated with what happened to the centuries old Buddha statues in Afghanistan under the fundamentalist Taliban. The same destruction of any archaelogical evidence which shows Jews are not recently converted Khazars is ongoing under the temple mount mosque. For that matter, look how much regard Arafat had for the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. Anything that shows their Koran is incorrect is fair game for destruction.

I'm surprised that Abdullah and Mubarak haven't gone to Washington already to rescind the Peace Treaties. The Arabs already got what they wanted, LAND. Their side of the bargain was empty promises. See how easy it is to undo their commitments. THIS is why Land for Peace is such a sham. Israel gives up something tangible (land) for something that blows in the wind (promises). There you go, Ivor. Your suggestion almost undid the whole transaction. Easy.

"Have you even once considered that there is a difference between Israeli and Jewish?" Just as there is a difference between Muslim and Palestinian Arab, right? So that means that the PA does not need to control the Temple Mount, right? Especially since the site has been administered by the waqf and freedom of worship for Muslims (but not Jews or any other religion) has been allowed for decades. In any case, the key problem here is not administration. It is the fact that Muslims have built their sites on top of sites sensitive to other religions (in this case Judaism - from which they also borrow much else). When faced with this, Muslims seem to practice a combination of denial and rock throwing that makes them especially unappealing.

Hebron is the site of the oldest Jewish community in the world, which dates back to Biblical times. The Book of Genesis relates that Abraham purchased the field where the Tomb of the Patriarchs is located as a burial place for his wife Sarah. According to Jewish tradition, the Patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and the Matriarchs Sarah, Rebekah, and Leah are buried in the Tomb. Hebron has a long and rich Jewish history. It was one of the first places where the Patriarch Abraham resided after his arrival in Canaan. King David was anointed in Hebron, where he reigned for seven years. One thousand years later, during the first Jewish revolt against the Romans, the city was the scene of extensive fighting. Jews lived in Hebron almost continuously throughout the Byzantine, Arab, Mameluke, and Ottoman periods. It was only in 1929 ? as a result of a murderous Arab pogrom in which 67 Jews were murdered and the remainder were forced to flee ? that the city became temporarily "free" of Jews. After the 1967 Six-Day War, the Jewish community of Hebron was re-established. It has grown to include a range of religious and educational institutions

What a smoke screen the Arabs are laying down. The sites have always been revered by religiuos Jews, many of whome lived in Hebron until they ware massacred by the Arabs in 1929 (sounds like Hitler to me). Meanwhile, Jerusalem is under Israeli control (whether the UN likes it or not), but the Arab Muslims are allowed to control the Temple Mount, despite the fact that they often shower the Jews with rocks. And, by the way, Jews were forbidden to enter the Old City to pray from 1948-67, even though the Western Wall is the most sacred site in Judaism. Enough of the Arab crying and rioting. To paraphrase Shakespear, "Bigotry, thy name is Islam".

Egypt should not even open its mouth on this. They are busy digging up and finding all kinds of ancient stuff which they value as their heritage. They would not like other people to lay claim to their heritage, would they! There is no doubt about it - the Tomb of the Patriarchs and the Tomb of Rachel belong to the Jews. Arab claim to it is just pure greed, bad-mindedness and an evil attempt to deprive Jews of their heritage and history. Just because they built a mosque on the site thousands of years later does not mean they have first claim to it. The remains of the biblical people in the tombs are Jewish, not Arabic. Egypt can have its heritage but the Jews cannot because the Arabs want to steal it from them? Is thievery an Arab trait or an Islamic one or is it applicable to both? Disgusting.

It's all in the timing, meant to incite and then when there are understandable protests throw out the punch line that Muslims and Arabs and Turks are trying to destroy the history of the Jewish People. They have done this with the Temple Mount as well. No one denies the connection of these sites to Judaism and the Jewish People. It is the state of Israel under this government that is saying: "they belong to us and not to you and we will not share". Otherwise, this world heritage step would not have been taken. It is meant to provoke.
