To ensure high school students are up to date, the Education Ministry decided to add current events classes to the curriculum.

But when questioned on current events themselves, many teachers appeared unqualified to teach such classes.

Carolyn you really are a patronising idiot. Since when was watching the news and reading the paper- I hope you meant several papers in order to get a more balanced take on things - the single element of being a good educator ? I would imagine that teachers - like most educated people watch the news once a day and flick through the papers. After that they sit and mark homework, plan classes, search for more material to liven up and vary the lessons, make telephone calls to team members and parents, build and mark exams and tests ..and then do private lessons or second jobs in order to make ends meet. Carolyn, since when were teachers different from anyone else ? Why don't you think they read the papers - other than out of your own ignorance and ill-placed cynicism?

Here;s another chance to batter teachers who have enough on their plate, perhaps if teachers were paid more they would have time to worry about things besides making ends meet at the end of a month.

"Current events classes" may become an instrument for political brainwashing. This is how it was in the only country I know (USSR) where such classes did exist. Ms Education minister may naively assume that the left hegemony will exist in Israel forever, so that the brainwashing would be "in a right direction". It would be better for the Education ministry to try to return the school back to giving REAL knowledge and values.

Why am I not suprised by this statement, oh yeah because my daughter's 6th grade science teacher last year said that the handle on a screwdriver is rubber so that it doesn't get hot when you turn it! So the statement that teachers maynot be prepared to teach current events doesn't suprise me one bit. I bet alot of them don't watch the evening news or open a paper either!
