Education Ministry Director-General Shmuel Abuav on Wednesday informed Education Minister Yuli Tamir that he was resigning from his position.

Abuav will apparently remain director general of the ministry until the middle of October, when elections will be held to find his replacement.

His resignation marks the end of years of public service. The director general's associates said he plans now to "turn to other projects."

Abuav, 48, has served as director general of the Education Ministry since May 2006. Prior to that, he served as the director general of the Housing and Construction Ministry.

He also headed the Kiryat Tivon Council from 1989-2004 and has served as chairman of the local government's education committee since 1995.
