Dutch opposition irate over plan to sell defense system to Israel
Israel to use the system for maintenance of its own air defense system; opposition parties say deal violates Dutch policy.
By DPA Tags: Israel defenseOpposition parties in The Netherlands responded angrily to a plan to sell an air defense system to Israel in November, announced by deputy defense minister Cees van der Knaap in parliament on Tuesday.
It concerns an outdated system, parts of the HAWK helicopter, which Israel wants to use for maintenance of its own air defense system.
The countries are due to sign a sales contract in November, Van der Knaap said. If the United States gives permission for the arms deal, Israel will receive the parts by 2008.
The Greens (GL) and Socialist Party (SP), both members of the opposition, claim the sale violates previous Dutch agreements not to sell arms to Israel.
The parties requested foreign affairs minister Maxime Verhagen to clarify the deal.
Verhagen on Tuesday promised parliament to look into the matter.
He stressed however that if a country requires arms for defensive reasons, this might not fall under the terms of earlier agreements not to sell arms.
Attempts by the Greens and the Socialist Party to stop the government from allowing Israel to use Dutch territory to transport arms from the U.S. to Israel, remained unsuccessful.

These disgusting quislings say nothing when islofascists murder progressive Dutch, but are 'irate' about dealings with the vanguard of progressivity -- Israel. Truly a self-loathing group, not long for this world.
Me, are you referring to one of my posts here? just don't make sense your comments.
These soldiers make a career in the army/navy, it is a well paid risk to be in the war zones. I have seen from closeby that soldiers returned from naval missions (6 months), having cruised around the oceans, done absolutely nothing, returned to receive a red carpet treatment and a big fat bonus which allowed them to buy a new motor cycle ow down payment on a new house (on top of their well paid - and yes risky - jobs.) Dutch soldiers chicken out when it comes to real action, check out history facts about Dutchbat operation in Srebenica, where 1000 men and boys were slaughtered under the watchfull eye of Dutchbatters.
The alliance between the leftists and the Jihadists is the same everywhere.
Dutch congress were already infiltrated by mohamedans who wants to take over dutch country.
Historic claim, huh? Try that in a court of law -- but of course when has the law ever concerned Israelis. Or the Fourth Geneva Convention, for that matter.
the only thing the dutch know how to make besides cheese is beer. so, they need to keep their mouth shut...because they may need israel someday. besides, it is a country founded on neo germanistic values.....TRUE JEWHATERS
"Opposition parties in The Netherlands responded angrily to a plan to sell an air defense system to Israel in November..." Not surprising in light of the fact that 3/4 of Dutch Jewry was exterminated during World War II--with the active and even eager participation of Dutch authorities. Dare we also note that thousands of Dutch volunteered for service in the Waffen-SS. The final stage of socialism is...anti-semitism.
Contrary to another poster who thought the Dutch need money to fund their lousy military, I suggest that Holland needs money because of the growing Arab immigrants sitting on their State welfare ranks, sucking off the system while they spend their time cursing their Dutch hosts. Unlike their actions for the Jews who worked hard in Holland, the Dutch welcome the blood-suckers from the Middle East with open arms.
They had no problem selling parts to Iran
Chickens??? You go and serve in a combat zone,Aaron, and then come back and be treated as you say. Were you in Afghanistan? The Brits,US ,Canadians are doing the bulk of the combat, but the Dutch are there too. You sound like an unemployed loser to afraid to sign up for the military, and now you're crying when they get their justly deserved honours.
I think you have it quite wrong. There is no comparing Israel's defenses with Syria or Iran. Syria/Iran has never been targeted for elimination by anyone - neither the State or its people. Israel has. Syria/Iran make public threats on UN members, and even support proxy groups in attacks. Israel has often called to be left alone, and pushed for peace. For you, I will make it more simple. The group that is attacked more deserves defensive weapons. The group doing the most attacking deserves to be castrated!
It is another knee jerk reaction to anything Israeli,American or level headed by a European left, kidnapped by anti semites and bigots. As the creation of Eurostan rolls on Isarael can be used as a rallying cry by the huge ammount of Muslims and hangers on as it is the only thing that they think they can agree on.They certainly can,t agree on a love of the free press, democracy or much else that should be dear to their hearts as this would require support of Israel, the US and the idea of a democratic and reasonable Europe. Two websites explain this excellently: boycottisrael.org.uk :and: eurostan.eu
The Dutch obviously see a defense system as an offensive system as it allows Israel to defend itself from its enemies who belive it has no right to be there. If Israel needs air defense systems then should be investing in development of its own systems which there will never be a shortage of parts over because of politics and can be exported to others There are also no hellicopters that are designed for air defense there is however the HAWK missle which is an anti aircraft system which Israel bought from the US in the 1960s. It has of course been upgraded over the years and improoved but fact is its still an aging system.
Then why is Israel wasting its good money on this joke? Between domestic ingenuity and US support, why in the heck does Israel need dutch weapons? Israel should encourage that these weapons be sold to Syria and Iran, what a joke.
No wonder the so-called Zionists think that they are shunned and despised. The are constantly bomarded with crap that you delivered in your last post. So, why is Israel in the West Bank? Might it have anything to do with the fact that Jews were denied access to their holiest site, Israel was attacked by all its Arab enemies, including Jordan, in 1967 and when it offered to withdraw based on a peace agreement and access to Jerusalem was met with the famous 3 "no's". Do you think countries should be entitled to invade others with impunity. If they aren't successful, they simply can insist on getting everything back. What incentive does that create. Anyway, Jordan gave up its claim to the West Bank and Israel has a historic claim that pre-dates by millenia the Pal claim. As to killing PALS, look, before the PALS decided to kill and maime Jews in their stupid intifadas their was no killing of Arabs. Arabs, on the other hand killed and pogromed Jews well before their was a state of Israel.
it makes sense.
@ Aaron : You're posting nonsense. Dutch soldiers are fighting and dieing in Afghanistan right now. Instead of posting nonsense why don't you go read up on international affairs. You're just making a fool of yourself. And the HAWK system is being replaced with the more advanced NASAMS II. That is why the Dutch are selling it.
and boycotting the Hamas. I think its time to see how many dutch served under Hitler, let me guess, more than any other occupied country.
" Hey Aaron, don`t you know that it well may be US tax payer money that will pay for the defense system. " Exactly my point Janice, so sad to be so dependent on a big brother. Of course, without the help of big brother, Israel would have been nothing today, may not have existed anymore even. so, THANK YOU AMERICAN TAX PAYERS !!!!
The Germans would never resort to such hypocracy in todays mad mad world. thank god for Angele Merkel...thanks for nothing Holland
The weapon system is an American one and was most likely sold to the Netherlands with the understanding that it could not re-sell it without US permission. Most US or even Russian weapon systems are sold with all sorts of checks about transferring it to another nation. If the Netherlands wanted to sell it to Poland, they would probably be required to get US permission for the re-sale. I only hope Israel got it cheap. What you say is generally true but not exactly in this instance.
"They`re defensive arms. So what`s the Netherlands` problem?" Good question - perhaps can be answered by someone from Israel who are always screaming when Iran or Syria buy defensive arms.
I guess the opposition are the descendants of the Dutch people who turned in Anne Frank and collaborated with the Germans during WWII. The beat goes on.
my mother was a member of the Dutch Resistance, that got caught, and also was in the Dutch Army. She also supported the SP.Holland has become a a moral pigsty.
"uuuhhh Dutch arms" You haven't even grasped that it is about American weapons. Why not read the funnies and leave the rest of the paper to the adults???
The Dutch army was in war in former Yugoslavia, and now in Afghanistan and Africa. The army needs money badly so they will sell just anything they can. The soldiers overseas get paid well, too well for the stuff they do. They are scared chickens compared to US and British armies. They screwed up big time in Bosnia not long ago. Since the army in Holland is not compulsary, they need to offer big money to get some volunteers to sign up. Naval man/women are sent on a mission for 6 months, then return from their voyages accros the 'dangerous'zones and are welcomed back like heroes, receiving medals. It is a real joke this Dutch army and navy.
They're defensive arms. So what's the Netherlands' problem?
There is nothing unusual in the fact that a weapons exporting country reserves the right to prohibit the re-sale to a third party. Not that such formality would be exercised in this specific case.
Hey Aaron, don't you know that it well may be US tax payer money that will pay for the defense system. If Israel wants the money then they have an obligation to obey those who pay. But don't worry, there is scant if any chance that the US will turn down Israel's request. There are too many in our Congress who will not allow any request that Israel wants to be turned down.
Interesting, but I recall a certain cargo plane -- Israeli -- crashing outside of Amsterdam some years ago. People started getting sick, but the Israelis assured the Dutch there was nothing dangerous in the cargo. Assured them and assured them... until they conceded they were lying. Turns out the cargo was toxic. And the Dutch are going to believe Israel when it says the technology will be used strictly for defense? How is it even conceivable that any country would sell military equipment to a country that for years has been occupying another, stealing their land, killing them with impunity, and telling the rest of the world to bugger off? From the Zionists on these boards you'd think the whole world shunned and despised Israel.
Luckily Israel still has friends that mean well (as opposed to 'friends' like the current resident of the White House). Of course, there will be those that blindly believe everyone is against them. Luckily they are wrong. But friendship needs to be deserved. Israel should act very wisely to move the conflict, decisively, into the right direction. Luckily the Dutch government doesn't contain GL and SP, but the radicals of the former-marxist SP almost had enough MPs. And they might pip Labor in the next elections. And even Labor met up with Meshal's lackeys this summer. The consequences of the disaster of a Left wing government will be more serious than losing a refueling harbor. I can already hear some geo-political geniuses laugh about this. Yes, the Netherlands are far away and face very different challenges than Israel. But it has proven to be a true friend. And that might mean sometime you sometime have to listen and consider some sound advice.
That's what Isreal needs! When was the last time that the Netherlands went to war? Have they even used these weapons before?
"parts of the HAWK helicopter, which Israel wants to use for maintenance of its own air defense system." - DPA I think this garbled. It probably means the HAWK missile system.
The sentence about the US of A granting permission to Israel for buying the parts, is very scary and show how dependent Israel is of its main and most important ally. Very sad in a way, this dependency.
