Dutch Jews: Germany unjustly not paying Dutch Holocaust survivors
Group spearheading struggle: Some may say Jews are out to get money again, but injustice must be rectified.
By Cnaan Liphshiz Tags: Germany Holocaust Dutch JewsGermany is unjustly withholding money from Dutch Holocaust survivors, an umbrella group for Dutch Jews told Haaretz.
On Thursday, on the eve of the anniversary of Kristallnacht, the group's leaders presented Germany with a petition protesting "injustice to 2,000 Dutch survivors."
The bone of contention is a one-time grant the Dutch survivors received in the 1960s. Because of this grant, most of the survivors from the Netherlands are ineligible for compensation under a new arrangement agreed upon last year.
"We found that because of this one-time grant of some 1,400 euros on average, we're not entitled to a monthly payment of 270 euros which is guaranteed in Article 2 of the Claims Conference," said the initiative's leader, Avraham de Vries.
Along with the de Vries group in Tel Aviv, a group of Jewish survivors in the Netherlands gave the German embassy in the Hague a copy of the petition, which is addressed to German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Article 2 of the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany - a body representing world Jewry in compensation talks - was regarded as an achievement when it was signed in 2006. It awarded needy survivors a lifelong monthly stipend. But anyone who had received a grant from Germany was ineligible.
De Vries' organization, Platform Israel, found that Germany had approved 949 of 2,954 Jewish applicants for payment under Article 2. Five hundred denied applicants live in Israel. The remaining 1,500 are in Holland.
"If Germany wishes to engage in petty bookkeeping, then by all means, let them deduct our one-time grants from what we are owed in monthly payments," says Dr. Eldad Kisch, de Vries' partner in the struggle.
Kisch says the Dutch Jews would never have taken the money had they known it would become grounds for refusing them payment in old age. "They gave us milk money and we were stupid enough to take it."
De Vries says that at the time the Netherlands had not yet recovered from World War II. "We were happy to get anything," he says. Kisch recalls that many survivors used the modest income supplement to buy furniture or a car.
Marthi Herschler, head of Ajalah, a group that represents Dutch Israelis, recalls the points system that was used to determine the size of the grant. "Wearing a yellow patch got you a certain number of points. A murdered parent got you more points."
Each point was worth 15 euros, says veteran compensation campaigner and former Dutchman Avraham Roet. "An orphan who'd lost both his parents in the Holocaust got 200 points, or 3,000 euros, but men who were sterilized for marrying non-Jewish wives received only 750 euros."
According to Roet, some survivors who received only one point, or 15 euros, are now refused a monthly stipend of 270 euros. Roet says the Dutch government contacted the German government on the survivors' behalf, without success.
The German embassy in Tel Aviv received the cosignatories but would not comment on their timing - the 69th commemoration day for the pogrom the Nazis orchestrated across the Third Reich. "The Embassy is aware of this issue and will transmit the petition to the German authorities for further examination. We have been in touch with the Dutch Embassy on this matter," the German embassy told Haaretz.
The cosignatories say they are prepared for a backlash in Europe. "More people are saying that the compensation issue is dragging on for too long," Kisch says. "Some might say the Jews are out to get money again. Let them. This injustice must be corrected."

You are wrong , many if not most [ exept Israelis ] survivors worldwide receive their money directly from Germany . You had only to see the quantity of people at the German Embassy in Tel Aviv [ some years ago ] who came to have a life certificate .
You mention your country. But the Arabs invaded Israel in 1948, and rejected the two-state solution. You speak of a country, yet never in history was there a Palestinian state. There was the British occupation, and before that the Ottomans. Why should Israel apologize for protecting itself from the Arabs? Where is the Arab apology for expelling most of the Jews living in Arab countries - Syria, Iraq, Egypt? Israel a 'monstrous state?" It has per capita income 15 times that of any comparable-sized Arab state. Arabs already have 25 states of their own. How many more do they want?
Perhaps Elly blames Germany Anton, because he realizes that his complaint is totally lost against an all powerful group such as the JCC, and has for some foolish reason a shred of hope left that perhaps some Germans can recognize that they share a great deal of the blame in the situation. Let us not lose sight of the fact that by granting the JCC legal heirship to most of the formerly Jewish owned properties in E. Germany that Germany was making out REALLY WELL! Had it been required that the actual heirs been sought out, then most of them would never have auctioned off their properties for pennies on the dollar. This was a cosy deal for all involved.
Might you are right but it is good to respect own life and see itselfe as worth. I think, hardly you will see any money. EU is economic crashed. Huge costs of wars abroad and titanic security measures. Thousends of people get salary to read Muslim letters, re-write things from authorites and even re-pack in controlled envelops. I am afraid, it will stay just a wish to get some fair damage pay.
East Germans lost their property which was confiscated and sold and ALL the money went directly to the JCC who was supposed to transfer it to the former Jewish land owners. Why do you blame Germany for the JCCs failure to do so?
As a Palestinian I feel happy whenever justice is being respected and restored to the harmed ones. I am also wondering when will the Israeli government and the Israeli people admit to the crime(s) committed against me ,against my family, against my society and against my country ?Will we hear an apology soon instead of continuing stupidly to blame the victims and defend tribally this monstrous state ? Will the daily crimes against innocent civilians ever stop ?Will you stop denying my existence as a Palestinian and my right to the land that is mine according to every moral and legal standard? Will you ever stop your occupation to my land?will you ever stop your criminal measures against Gaza where my family lives?
Germany paid billions, that are now probably worth trillions in today's money. Israel, the Netherlands and all those other countries took the money gladly, but instead of giving it to those people it belonged to (ie the Holocaust survivors) they spent it on everything else but them. That is not Germany's fault. If Germany should only pay more if Israel/the Netherlands can prove that the money they got so far was actually spent on the survivors - but lets be serious, looking at the lavish life style of the settlers and the poor money for the survivors we all know where the money went to in the case of Israel. For the Netherlands it is a different story, there might be more money to be paid by Germany.
The JCC is the party representing the victims. The survivors should address their complaints to the JCC that signed the agreement. The JCC has continually cashed in from Germany huge funds a large portion of which is still in their coffers and can be used to offset any injustice agreed to by the JCC.
"More people are saying that the compensation issue is dragging on for too long," Kisch says. Of course, this compensation has gone on too long and I might add these are the same people who have refused to allow Palestinians their right of return for 60 years. Their double standartds are atrocious. It's the Palestinians who dignity and rights should be respected and compensated today not the Holocaust survivors. Israel should stop bleeding other countries for compensation. It's getting to be despicable-especially in view of their appalling double standards. But that's the Israelis for you--it seems it's all about their kind and to heck with everyone' else's rights. Well, this isn't right and nor will it be accepted anymore. Israel's obligation to the Palestinian people is way overdue and must be fulfilled. Dutch
and good for him. Others were not so lucky.
Obviously holocaust survivors of today were young during the holocaust. Many of them were able to lead quite normal lives afterwards and married, had children and provided for their families. However, many others werent able to adjust to normal life. In Israel they have been taken care of in psychiatric facilities, from their arrival until the present. No-one is asking that these poor people become rich from German hand-outs, but their basic needs should be provided for by the country that wrecked their lives beyond imagination. Someone like myself cannot fathom the horror they went through, even though we've learned many details of their experiences - but we cant feel their pain. Even children of holocaust survivors often have a load of psychological baggage due to being raised by a holocaust survivor. Although many years have passed, its shallow to expect these people to "move on". They are at the end of their lives. They deserve dignity and respect.
Jenny and Miriam you are not alone, I am decidedly disgusted by these endless claims. One day in the not too distant future a terrible scandal will erupt and it will not be kept out of the media like all the others (Swiss Banks) Raul Hilberg spoke out against this massive fraud. The survivors themselves ahve been robbed blind and now it has become a free for all. Ihave never known so many people speak openly about Jews, even those who have been our supporters in the past, so desparingly of us. These people will destroy every last ounce of jewish self respect before they are done. Please, can we not stop this and move on.
a long time ago, to keep going back to get more money is perverse, is an industry, is so transparent only about money. At what point do you get more resentment and hate towards you that the cost becomes to high for jews in general. Move Mikey, move on.
The comments here make me understand how totally morally and historically bankrupt people are. Germany and all the countries who murdered Jews by the million should be made to pay. Where is your sense of proportion?
Go on, honey, don't hold back. I want to hear the one about the "Jewish octapus" choking the planet to death with its tentacles and squeezing money out of the unsuspecting gentiles. Please Jenny, tell us more! And then tell us how all this can't possibly be anti-Semitic, since you are a Jew.
by writing books about the moral bankrupcy of the so-called "Holocaust Industry", and make piles of cash out of it in the process.
I myself would be willing to let bygones be bygones--then again I wasn't at Bergen-Belsen.
If the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany agreed to the terms, and if the Conference does indeed represent world Jewry, the aggrieved Dutch Jews should blame the conference for having sold them out in the agreement--not Germany. Of course, many Jews llike myself do not recognize the Conference as my representative--who gave them the right?--but that is a different issue.
sorry dutch jews, your country of choice, the netherlands, has no special relationship with germany. in order for you to benefit from the hc industry, you must as a matter of priority move henceforth move to the holy land. germany is dsurely paying its dues there. after the revelations of the pensions minister, the next cheques are expected after consultations in a couple of weeks
As a Jew, I find the constant milking for reparations quite off putting. Even if my view isn't ver popular.
""If Germany wishes to engage in petty bookkeeping, then by all means, let them deduct our one-time grants from what we are owed owed in monthly payments," As if jews never engage in "petty bookkeeping" this whole Holocaust industry is based on "petty bookkeping" Shylock from the merchant of venice was engaged in "petty bookkeping" :)
As I wrote in my comment on another article: I'm getting sick and tired of these unremitting cals for reparations 60 years ex post facto. These people are not driven by a sense of justice but by avarice, pure and simple. My father's entire family was murdered in Shoah. He never got a cent from anyone nor did he ask for any. He built a very comfortable life together with my mom for our family practically from nothing. These gold-diggers no longer invoke sympathy in most people but distaste and repulsion. Let's move on already, for goodness` sake! mls.lists@btinternet.com
Similar problem occured with Austrian Jews who had real estate in East Germany. We got a pittance while Germany walked away with millions. They won't budge arguing that "they must follow International Laws." They are hypocrites.
