Diplomats: Weak climate deal is harbinger of failure on Iran
Diplomats say China's muscle-flexing in disputes with U.S. heralds dim future for talks on Iran sanctions.
By Shlomo Shamir and News Agencies Tags: Israel news Iran nuclearThe weak accord with which the United Nations climate summit closed is a harbinger of world leaders' likely future failure in efforts to impose tougher sanctions against Iran, diplomats said Saturday.
The historic climate talks ended Saturday after a 31-hour negotiating marathon, with delegates accepting a U.S.-brokered compromise that gives billions in climate aid to poor nations but does not require the world's major polluters to make deeper cuts in their greenhouse gas emissions.
Following the end of the summit, diplomats said that China's flexing of its political muscles in its disputes with the United States at the conference should serve as a warning of what will happen when the Obama administration seeks to bring tougher sanctions against Iran for UN Security Council approval.
The diplomats, who were referring to the dispute over Iran's nuclear ambitions, spoke on the condition of anonymity.
The Obama administration has said that time is running out for the diplomatic approach to resolving the crisis, and six world powers are expected to consult by telephone on December 22, and are considering a fourth round of UN sanctions against Tehran come January.
Earlier Saturday, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said that Tehran was ready to consider a recent proposal issued by Western nations under which Iran would obtain nuclear fuel from outside sources rather than producing it itself, the official IRNA news agency reported.

Faceless and cowardly "diplomats" who speak on the condition of anonymity so they can live another day to work toward worldwide chaos and communism, as usual have it backwards. The years of self-interested foot-dragging and politically correct big lies by Iran and it's fellow west-hating sponsors - China and Russia, were the predictor that there would be no real deal in Copenhagen if the United States was not prepared to surrender unconditionally to the demands for tribute from "developing nations". Actually shocking that Obama did not agree to terms! Likewise the Shalit "deal". So called negotiations are nothing but a prolonged psychological warfare campaign for wearing down Israel to accept the unacceptable.
The climate deal is not a nuclear negotiation. US Republicans were there to prevent a deal just like Sudan tried to do and for the same reason, to protect profits for BIG OIL. China has always had an interest in not having conflict with Iran. Conflict with Iran would hurt China. Obama is not yet done talking with Iran. He may yet make a deal and disappoint those who want a war.
was not reaching an agreement with the United states over Carbon dioxide emmission reductions. China's problem was Obama's demands of verification that would be required to ensure country's were abiding by their promises made at Copenhagen. It is a completly separate issue from the proposals to move towards sanctions to prevent Iran achieving parity with Israel.
