The whistle-blowing website obtained some 250,000 diplomatic cables between the U.S. and its allies, which Washington had urged the site not to publish.
In a June 2009 meeting between Defense Minister Ehud Barak and a U.S. congressional delegation, Barak claimed that the Israeli government "had consulted with Egypt and Fatah prior to Operation Cast Lead, asking if they were willing to assume control of Gaza once Israel defeated Hamas."
"Not surprisingly," Barak said in the meeting, Israel "received negative answers from both."
While similar reports of such attempts to link the PA and Egypt to Israel's war with Hamas had already surfaced in the past, the cable released by WikiLeaks on Sunday represents the first documented proof of such a move.
In the document, Barak also expressed his feeling that "the Palestinian Authority is weak and lacks self-confidence, and that Gen. Dayton's training helps bolster confidence."
The meeting which the cable documents took place just days before U.S. President Barack Obama's Cairo speech, and a few weeks after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's first visit to the United States, a visit which revealed the deep differences between Obama and himself.
The cable also refers to what Barak describes as the debate within the Israeli cabinet in regards to a "development of a response to President Obama's upcoming speech in Cairo."

the PA really has turned their backs on their people with the help of Israel. You can't bargain with the Palestinian National Cause
poor americans, all their carefully-sewn propaganda is falling apart. i thought that the PA wanted to "help" the gazans and was just pushed out by mean old hamas???
What would be amazing news is that the Palestinians were finally being honest with themselves and Israel behind the scenes and renouncing violence, revisionism, incitement, etc., so they could get on with the important and extremely serious business of actually building a State. Unfortunately, if there was a Wikileaks counterpart for the Arab/Muslim world, it would say just the opposite.
"the Palestinian Authority is weak and lacks self-confidence'. This is absolutely true and you know why? It's because THe PA authority is not the will of the Palestinian people but the one of West and of Israel in particular. That's why PA represents self interests of few traitors not the people they are fighting for their freedom.
He refused to play ball with Israel.
Abbas refused to cooperate with Israel.
I can't wait to see tomorrow's headlines around the world. US exit. Nobody is going to speak to them.
who cares? Israel still beat hamas either way, and its not like they did anything wrong. I dont understand why this is even news
It's likely that a weakened Abbas, will now be seen as an Israeli ally! This is good for no one, not for Israel and definitely not for the Palestinians! Peace in the ME is a long way away! :0(
But is this wikileak an other tramp to stop the ridicilous ''peace'' process? I dont know! It's not gonna be peace anyway....
Well, Israel has yet to "defeat" Hamas, so far they have only strengthened them. It is perfectly understandable that neither Egypt nor Fatah would assume control, because Gaza would turn into a chaotic mess where some extremism would spawn, and Israel would immediately link the extremism to Fatah/Egypt, making it look as though they had caused it, when it was really the scale of damage and death caused by Israel.
Although I'm against the expansion of settlements, Isreal should not unilaterally disengage from the west abnk. the PA are weak and do not have the necessary institutions for self- rule. hopefully they will have in the coming years. If hamas got into power in the west bank all moderates are in trouble.
Is anyone surprised that neither Egypt or Fatah believed Israel would topple Hamas with Cast Lead? Clearly Israel was so deluded that it thought it might. How could Israel topple Hamas if it's plan was to avoid casualties and not close with the enemy? Savage attacks upon the infrastructure were not going to topple Hamas anymore than they caused Lebanon to turn on Hizbollah. What has been confirmed is that the Government of Israel was way out of touch with reality in June 2009.

in that if he could enlist the PA's cooperation in deep-six-ing Hamas--thus being left with only the PA to deal with--and then whisper (or threaten to) in any number of ears--all of the tits-for-tats that had gone on--well...I dunno...but he might just have a certain party--by what we used to call "the short hairs!" (FYI, I can come up with roughly 10 conspiracy scenarios--in any given half hour--which beats watching TV reruns.)
this just confirms the obvious to the non believers of fatah that abbas is a show pony and a traitor.
Revolution!!! Nah....The world will go on turning and it will be the same old place tomorrow as it is today. Only a few fools believe that these leaks are world shattering events. Those who leaked this stuff will be the only ones that suffer . Quite frankly they'll deserve all they get.
It works! This is the default web page for this server. The web server software is running but no content has been added, yet so big lie oh my god come on guys stop hack the truch
Everyone knew that since we had heard some Security official of Fatah discussing this with the IDF... That news is nothing new. Yet, it is just another piece of the puzzle showing "Abu Mazen" is on Mossad's payroll...
The headline should've read: Israel fails to coordinate Gaza war with Abbas. Because, tomorrow, Al-Jazeera will say your beloved Abbas had only tried to coordinate - not that he REFUSED. And Ha'aretz seems to be the only source reporting this. For now. Good night.
Undermining Western style democracies while turning a blind eye to human rights abuses by real, shameless, murderous tyrants around the world, including Hamas, and Hezbollah. Im all for letting the truth be known, but its the tunnel focus on exposing and sabotaging the good guys, and only the good guys, that makes Haaretz the WIkileaks of Israel.
Egypt prefers to keep the Moslem Brotherhood locked up in Gaza not spreading jihad in Sinai At least Hamas is clear where they stand " no peace ever"
"Production of sausage and diplomacy are not suitable for public area. Because they are both disgusting" I dont remember the owner of these words regarding the confidentiality of diplomacy. But he is right. Diplomacy became sausage thanks to Wikileaks.
But it is not any different from how Egypt, SA, Syria, Lebanon, or for that matter, any of the other 21 Arab states feel: persona non gratis.
but abass didn't bomb the people or the buildings . this is the reason abass didn't want eletions he can't win . but abass is still leader for now
Abbas performed as he had to. He kept the West Bank quiet. Were he allow it to spin into chaos, then Israel would have had an excuse to savage the West Bank as it was Gaza. Abbas has been working for years on the premise that israel would reward the Palestinians with a State if the Palestinians proved they would live in Peace with Israel. Israel is delighted that Abbas has kept the peace. Israel has proven it will never allow a Palestinian State. Was Abbas a perfidious man? No, he has not betrayed Palestinians. Has he been used, and abused by perfidious men?
The only cred this creep has is his portfolio of suppressing violence and believing US lies. Get rid of Arafat and we can make peace. Abbas rejected the Goldstone report. I knew they fought Hamas in Gaza but buddying up with Barak and hoping Cast Lead eliminates Hamas discreditis you. Retire
He must go and make way to the next generation.
Israel has been saying Iran will have the bomb "next year" since the 90s. Just like they did with Iraq and tricked and deceived the US/West to attack Iraq under TOTALLY FALSE and FABRICATED premises. Nothing surprising just good to confirm.
I am not a politician but If Egypt does not want Gaza and PA is too weak to own it, why not Israel take official control/ownership? I bet within weeks after Hamas is out, Gaza will flourish! - only the smarts can see it. why wait for iran to take full contro?
Unfortunately to Palestine and Palestinians is their biggest enemy are the Arab states. At least Israel is declared enemy. Arabs only pay lip service and stab Palestine in the back. Change can only come when Arabs and moslem states take one united stand and take orchestrated ACTION.
So what exactly did mr. Barak envisioned prior to 'Cast Lead'? To let the IDF murder a few thousand innocent Palestians, in a war started by Israel, and that Fatah would march the blood stained streets of Gaza? This is just once more vivid proof that Israeli leaders are out of touch with reality.
Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Bahrain, Egypt, and UAE are the axis of treason and Arab/Palestinian defeatism. Traitors that will fall soon and there real change will come.
it would be highly unlikely either the PA or Egypt would accept as this is stated within the leak. However I think it was wise of Israel to try and it is a great shame the PA did not stand up to the challenge. Again no damage here for Israel.
And if so, to what extent have they collaborated with Ehud Barak's plans to attack Gaza? Mahmoud Abbas and Hosni Mubarak KNEW that Israel was about to attack Hamas. They maintained Barak's secret, hoping that an Israeli victory over Hamas would benefit them too... As it happened it didn't even benefit Ehud Barak [who hoped that victory would increase his popularity and so that he could win the Prime Ministership]... AND MY Q: Did Abu Mazen agree on the SIEGE that Barak still imposes on Gaza? If he does, he'll loose the little credibility he has among the Palestinian people!
The Palestinians have never had an honest leader who wasn't arrested by the IDF or bought off. That is their dumbness. Why should principled people from around the support such a morally bankrupt "solidarity" movement.
For doing this expose :)
It also means the US was involved in this crap
Imagine --he qwas the defence minister. A real monty tpye --not. more like Custer.
Wikileak'd!
Israel tried to enlist Abbas. Abbas refused. Where is the problem, exactly?
or he'd be toasted now But the real expose here is that Israel was planning to defeat Hamas, not just "defending itself." And thus, that the operation totally failed in its objecitve.
Why do you think this is bad for Abbas? What a nation of self-deluders we are, or is it just our supporters?
but yet the jews and the us refuse to talk with the true govt of the Palestinians. this tells us that they are forcing a chang on the people that the people do not want. but thanagain its whats been going on in the us for decades. we cant expect anything else from them.
Why would he want to collude against his own people?
