U.S.: We will stop aid to Palestinians if UN bid proceeds
U.S. Consul General in Jerusalem, Daniel Rubinstein, tells chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat U.S. 'will take punitive measures' against Palestinian Authority if it seeks to upgrade position at UN General Assembly.

U.S. Consul General in Jerusalem, Daniel Rubinstein, told chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat in the name of the Obama administration, that the U.S. would veto a UN Security Council resolution calling for recognition of an independent Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip within the June 4, 1967 borders and for UN membership.

"If the Palestinian Authority insists on going to the Security Council, the U.S. will use the veto," he told Erekat during a meeting in the West Bank city of Jericho, according to a statement issued by Erekat's office.
"And in case the Palestinian Authority seeks to upgrade its position at the UN through the General Assembly, the U.S. Congress will take punitive measures against it, including a cut in U.S. aid," he said.
Rubinstein said his country sees the Palestinians' UN bid as "useless," and that it would be better to conclude a peace agreement with Israel through direct negotiations, according to Erekat.
Erekat said U.S. support for the Palestinian UN bid would actually enhance the two-state solution and peace in the Middle East.
He called on the U.S. to reconsider its position on the issue because "the right decision is to support Palestine's membership of the UN."
Erekat, who had also met with the European Union's representative to the Palestinian Authority, Christian Burger, also urged Europe to support Palestinian efforts to get full membership of the UN.
The European Union, he said, "should take the correct position, not the easy position."
The EU has not yet decided which way it will go when the issue comes up for discussion at the Security Council in September. Some member states, such as Spain, have said they would support the Palestinian step.
If the U.S. vetoes the Security Council resolution, the Palestinians plan to ask the UN General Assembly to vote on the resolution, which needs a two-thirds majority to pass.

After all his appointment was dictated by AIPAC and he takes directions from the zionist. Is he a dual citizen?
the u .ascould keep her so called aid which did not do any good to the palestinian people ,it only bought some p.a. officials and so called n.g.o.administrators ,promoted and encouraged corruption
The USA shows little willing to punish Israel for repeatedly breaking international law and thumbing its nose at their President, while it punishes the Palestinians for taking this logical step towards a two state solution. Seems like Obama was telling porkies... Either that or he's absolutely desparate for the pro-Zionist vote in the coming elections.
Now come the threats... Do you really think you can buy freedom?
That is the utter end of any pretense the USA is anything but an Israeli lacky.
They only reason Obama wants to stop the Palestinians from going to the UN is because he realizes what a mess he's made of things... This is damage control, but the US has already gotten the ball rolling on a complete transformation of the Middle East, and not for the better...
Why do they hate freedom for Palestinians?
US gives Israel unconditional $ (from our tax money!) . US has endless conditions for the paltry sum it gives Palestinians. Time for Palestinians to end that dependency. It is shameful that US puts conditions on Palestinian independence. Palestinians should not accept a cent of US money and should find other sources of funding.
Unfortunately the $450Miillion per year does not buy the US any leverage. With or without the money the Palestinians need a state and the Arabs now feel the US has no power to deliver one to them. As a collective group they are disappointed in the US and see how easy it is to roll the Obama administration without real consequence.
I'm ashamed of America over this bit of blackmailing....
What is there to be ashamed of? I am proud of America for standing by it's staunchest ally, despite the flack from the Arab world. The oly way that peace stands a chance is through direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians without preconditions. A unilateral declaration of statehood sanctioned by the UN will only incite more violence and drive a bigger wedge between the parties who need to negotiate directly with each other.
