U.S. Democrats and pro-Israel lobbies slam Republican Senator's call to halt Israel aid
Tea Party representative Rand Paul tells CNN’s Wolf Blitzer he has a lot of respect for Israel but he doesn't believe the U.S. should be funding the Mideast arms race during financial crisis.
By Natasha Mozgovaya Tags: Israel news Jewish World J Street US Middle East peaceU.S. Democrats and pro-Israel lobbies slammed on Thursday comments made by newly elected Republican Senator and Tea Party representative Rand Paul who suggested that the United States should halt all foreign aid including its financial aid to Israel.
In an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on Wednesday Paul said that “Reuters did a poll, and 71 percent of American people agree with me that when we're short of money, where we can't do the things we need to do in our country, we certainly shouldn't be shipping the money overseas.”

When asked by Blitzer if he wanted to halt an annual $3 billion that go to Israel, Paul replied affirmatively, explaining that Egypt recieves almost the same amount .
"You have to ask yourself, are we funding an arms race on both sides? I have a lot of sympathy and respect for Israel as a democratic nation, as, you know, a fountain of peace and a fountain of democracy within the Middle East. But at the same time, I don't think funding both sides of the arm race, particularly when we have to borrow the money from China to send it to someone else. We just can't do it anymore. The debt is all- consuming and it threatens our well-being as a country,” Paul said.
Pro-Israel Jewish lobby J Street issued a statement in response to Paul's comments saying it was “alarmed” by his suggestion.
“Senator Paul’s proposal would undermine the decades-long bipartisan consensus on U.S. support for Israel. Any erosion of support should concern Israel’s friends on both sides of the political aisle, and we call in particular on leaders and donors in Senator Paul’s party to repudiate his comments and ensure that American leadership around the world is not threatened by this irresponsible proposal," the statement issued by J Street read.
National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC) President and CEO David Harris also condemned his statement saying that “Paul's suggestion is negligent, shortsighted, and just plain wrong,” adding that “foreign aid in general, and aid to Israel in particular, is crucial to Israel's security and its pursuit of peace. Senator Paul's statement is yet another illustration of how the Republican Party continues to grow increasingly out of touch with the values of the vast majority of the American Jewish community."
Congresswoman Nita Lowey, Ranking member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations, called the initiative “shocking”.
“Israel is the only democratic nation in the Middle East and one of our most stalwart allies”, Lowey said. “A stable and secure Israel is in our national security interest and has been a staple of our foreign policy for more than sixty years. Using our budget deficit as a reason to abandon Israel is inexcusable. It is unclear to me whether Rand Paul speaks for the Tea Party, the Republican Party, or simply himself”.
Meanwhile, Republican Jewish Coalition Executive Director Matthew Brooks issued a statement saying "we share Senator Paul's commitment to restraining the growth of federal spending, but we reject his misguided proposal to end U.S. assistance to our ally, Israel."
"Moreover, based on his comments in an interview with CNN, we are concerned that Senator Paul may not grasp the fundamentals of our alliance with Israel. In 2007, the U.S. and Israel signed a ten-year 'Memorandum of Understanding' (MoU) to govern U.S. assistance going forward. A critical aim of the MoU was to preserve Israel's qualitative military advantage. Accordingly, any concern that U.S. assistance might undermine Israel's security is groundless," Brooks said.

US Senator speaks truth to power. Why borrow money from China to support the war against the Palestinians. Israel should pay for all of the costs of occupation. Egypt gets a similar amount and that military expenditure should be axed also. Occupation should be done in Shekels not Dollars
Finally someone is starting to speak the truth and the obvious. Enough free money to Israel. Keep that money in the US for the US citizens. Hopefully soon the money going to Egypt and Jordan will be stopped. Between these 3 the US will save about 10 Billion.
The US should cut off aid to Israel since Israel refuses to stop settlement expansion and negotiate in good faith. It is time for the US to let the UN mediate peace talks. Obviously, the US is to pro-Israel to be a mediator. Israel, with US help, tried for a decade to destroy its enemies but its enemies are stronger now than before.
More American Officials recognize that the United States needs to focus on its normal citizen first and foremost, not undermine its international standing on human rights and equality to all citizens of the world and start with one of its closest allies, especially when that Allie undermines its interest with no care.
Rand Paul and other Senators first prority is domestic issue, then foreign. YES, we should not increase the deficit giving away foreign aid. The current Isreali leadership is a threat to middle east peace and stopping foreign aid may actually make them more responsible for their own affairs. All the settlement activites and creating so called facts on the grounds are not in US interest nor for middle east peace
it's about time to turn off the tap
Senator Rand Paul's father, Representative Ron Paul, has long opposed US aid to Israel.
Rand Paul is exactly right. The U.S. should immediately cease funding the Israeli war machine. The U.S. is 14 trillion in debt and we should not be borrowing money from China in order to send it to Israel. And we should stop blindly supporting Israel; maybe it would be different if our money bought one iota of influence with israel- it doesn't. We can't even get them to stop building settlements on occupied territory - a clear violation of the 4th Geneva Convention. All the world knows that Israel just wants the land, the religious sites and that there is no plan to allow the state of Palestine to come into existence. Shame on you, Israel, get your boot heel off the collective necks of the Palestinian people. And everyone knows that the U.S. is the "enabler"; we give Israel money and weapons and political cover at the UN. Question: is all the world wrong about Israel? I don't think so; the U.S. is wrong for allowing Israel to behave like a small, spoiled child.
Isn't owned by ideology or swayed by money and power.
A sensible position from this movement. Start immediately with Israel but do demonstrate compassion when it comes to deserving countries.
There is support and then there is welfare. Israel keeps telling the world how great its economy is. So what's the problem?
That makes 100% sense, why is it that we should pay for Israel's arms? Why is that all Israel does is take, and never give? The USA is almost broke, but you guys still want money.
no funding for israel, egypt, lebanon, gaza, and saudi arabia... okay... try passing that bill that through american congress, goodluck
Its hard to argue with the logic. Especially if Israel insists on ignoring US policy in terms of the settlements, Road Map and so on. At least that's my non American view- accepting that whoever the Americans choose domestically is up to them.
Rand Paul, Thank you!!!! at least some grew some balls to say the right thing to free america from Jewish community which is holding us hostage.
Paul is right and the NJDC is wrong. US aid has not brought a sincere effort at peace from Israel and we can't afford to indulge the building of more settlements. we need that money for our schools and debt relief.
started debating foreign funding - especially the funding of 'allies' such as us who take their money then proceed to say 'thank you' by spitting in their collective face. Welcome to Israel.
But Lebanon holds fair elections. The Palestinians held fair elections. How can this person say that Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East? He is just plainly wrong.
I'm no fan of Rand Paul, but he is absolutely right. What he proposes should have been done 20 years ago when George H Bush the Elder was president. All of this time Israel has been either a blood sucking vampire or a blood sucking bed bug. It's always take, take, take, and give nothing back.
His daddy Ron Paul had the same ideas. Both do not understand how foreign aid benefits the US.
What he is saying is true. However this poor mans political career just went down the gurgler. You cant mess with Israel and survive pollitcally. Just a shame Americans are blind to that fact and are allowing themselves to be taken over like this. The begining of the end for the once almighty USofA every great civilization falls and the US aint falling its collapsing as we speak. The Middle east/ North africa has had enough of US placed/backed pollies is finally revolting Tunisia Egpyt Lebanon Yemen who next. As we speak Irans influence is geater then ever and it seem Hillary Obama and the rest have no idea.
Maybe this huy Rand Paul - the guy with the first name last and the last name first - should consider joining the Nink-In-Poop Party. He's be a good President.
We love Israel but pay your own damn bills. We are more broke than you !
LOL. Yup Israel is BIG FOUNTAIN OF PEACE Mr. Paul. I guess you need to do your homework better before you open your mouth.
This Republican must be unique in that he believes he's elected to represent the interests of the American taxpayer, not the Israelis and their delusion of a Greater Israel.
I am Jewish and I agree. The U.S. is hurting now and we need the money to help solve our problems Which we have many of unfortunately. We shouldn't be giving money to Egypt either. Israel has some of the most powerful weapons in the region and can develop weapons that could even surpass the most developed nations including the United States and Russia. Israel could probably sell these weapons and make a profit which not only brings money into the country but also improves skills and the labor force as well. Although that may hurt the weapon industry in the United States.
There is a rich nativist vein that runs through the Tea Party. That has always been a red flag for Jews wherever we have lived. Rand Paul is only the tip of a deeply held antagonism toward Jews, Asians, Blacks - all minorities in America. When I see Jews embracing tea party politics, I want to vomit.
in his father's footsteps. And, as usual, J Street jumps to keep sending US money down this mideast rathole.
Israel will be in a better position when the US stops foreign aid, because Israel will be able to withstand Obama's pressure for suicidal concessions to Israel's enemies.
There is something to be said about a people (the Americans) who don't have access to health care because they can't afford to pay for health insurance, and their government tells them it's too poor to help them...Yet it's sending billions of their hard earned tax money to Egypt and Israel. What exactly are the Americans getting for this? They are being fed the line that Egypt and Israel care for Americans and Egypt and Israel are using the money to insure the safety of Americans at home. As a result, many Americans truly believe that paying for this scheme is indeed more important for their well being than using this money to get the healthy care they so desperately need. If tables were turned, I wonder how many Israelis and Egyptians would accept that their hard earned money be sent to another nation on such a massive scale and on a yearly basis, effectively turning what was supposed to be aid into a right for the recipients and an obligation for the donors. No wonder Israeli politicians treat their American donors with complete disregard.
This is a major reason to cut US aid to a country that for last 43 years. At least 1 year of the 43 I saw by my own eyes the abuse as a soldier in the West bank. Most poloticians in US have no guts and principles when come to the Israeli abuse of Human Rights. And J-street, were is your dignety, don't you know the reality in the occupied teretories?
The "proud" state of Israel begging on it's knees for welfare payments from the "Christian Nation" of America. Disgusting.
This is a very responsible act,
Yes, I know that much of Israeli aid is indirect way to fund US military companies but if you include the 30yrs of interest, then this is enough to pay tuition for all highschool graduates to attend 4yr state colleges. US must focus its resources where it will help the US the most long term. Yes support of Israel is important but not to same level for most Americans.
He's speaking for the American people. Especially, for the 10 million unemployed Americans.
yeah well, as a center-right guy, I have to say I think these guys are a blight on the republican party. Having said that, the left also has their own dangerous kooks.. what I can also tell you is that as a jew who would vote republican if I could, If my only choice was either rand or some other guy, id take the other guy, regardless of party. I think we all know what these guys are about. I wonder, did he say that israel should be defunded while he was running for office? Anyhow, the whole notion is a farce. America gives foreign aid all over the place. It has done so for a long time. They are generous. 3 billion to protect their ally and interest in the region is peanuts. The american debt problem wont be solved by slashing 3 billion from the budget. Its such a joke that this is even a discussion. America's 3 billion just to be in the ME and support a democracy like israel is a BARGAIN! The truth is, israel has been giving ITS "blood and treasure" for the americans and many others for over 60 years! We all know how hillary loves to popularize the notion that israel cause america to lose its "blood and treasure"...wrong..sorry hillary..wise up....were the front line in a long tough fight and you better understand what is going on...all these ME countries in revolt?, that's trouble.
All foreign aid bloodsuckers should stand on their own two feet and pay their own bills with their own shekels. Now that's what I call tax relief for Americans. Mr. Rand Paul I salute you. Hope you don't get assassinated. Salaam/Shalom
How long before we see the Rand backflip? Israel without $3 billion a year in military trinkets? U.n.t.h.i.n.k.a.b.l.e.
why attack the guy if what he says is true? LOL J-street publicly opposes what Rand says....but secretly likes what he said!
Israel keeps claiming that it is an advanced economy, we sent them over $ 300 BLN in cash, armaments and Government Bond subsidies. What do we get, Zilch. Israel claims that they are the only democracy, I beg to differ, they are a theocracy, an occupier and a bully. We have had enough of that. Dr. Paul you have the full support of those 71 pct of American and more. Please make it happen. Applaude, Applaude.
I agree with Senator Rand Paul, and as an American I thank him for putting our country first.
Israel will carry on and develop this allow Israel to tell the world to shove the aid we will do what we decide to do...maybe the USA would miss the intelligence in fighting terrorism that Israel send them
But, he is entitled to his opinion. Best to invite him to Israel and make our case. I bet he changes his mind.
that an American Congressman would put the interest of America ahead of Israel? Incredible! Unbelievable! This man must be impeached now. Why this could start a landslide.
The US needs to borrow money from China and ship it to Israel while Israel economy is doing just well thank you?
