U.S. adviser: Washington hopes to promote Hezbollah 'moderates'

Hezbollah not 'purely a terrorist organization', assistant to the president for homeland security and counterterrorism says.

United States President Barack Obama's administration is looking for ways to build up "moderate elements" within the Lebanese Hezbollah guerrilla movement and to diminish the influence of hard-liners, a top White House official said on Tuesday.

John Brennan, assistant to the president for homeland security and counterterrorism, met with Lebanese leaders during a recent visit.

"Hezbollah is a very interesting organization," Brennan told a Washington conference, citing its evolution from "purely a terrorist organization" to a militia to an organization that now has members within the parliament and the cabinet.

"There is certainly the elements of Hezbollah that are truly a concern to us what they're doing. And what we need to do is to find ways to diminish their influence within the organization and to try to build up the more moderate elements," Brennan said.

He did not spell out how Washington hoped to promote "moderate elements" given that the organization is branded a "foreign terrorist organization" by the United States.

"We don't deal with them," he acknowledged. Last month, the United States and Israel accused Syria of arming Hezbollah with increasingly powerful missiles and weapons technology. Brennan said he raised those concerns during his recent visit to the region.

The main goal of Hezbollah's political wing was to ensure that it's military wing operates legally under state cover, it is an extension of their military wing. In recent years however, I think the United States is has been trying a carrot and stick approach with Hezbollah to lure it into the political scene and away from military activities. I believe some elements in the US administration envisage HA undergoing a smooth transition that will diminish it's emphasis on military activities. This is not exclusive to Obama's administration but in fact started during the Bush administration time, although now it's more comfortable to talk about it in public.

What Brennan is referring to... is that Hezbollah has a political and military wing, as well as an extensive social-aide network. In Lebanese sectarian politics... this may prove to have a fracture the west can exploit. Hezbollah moderates is more of a faint hope... then anything else. Lebanon has recently gone through a regional elections with confusing results... and the US can’t simply sit on their hands and wait for a perfect alignment of the stars. The Obama administration is merely laying the groundwork for a frank dialogue with Saeed Hariri, who is about to visit Washington. And like Israel, has a difficult and coercive coalition to manage.

the same story w/hamas. the so-called moderates within hamas haven't been able to change the main direction of the movement an inch. in iran you've got plenty of moderates as well, & unmistakably so. once they raised their head in opposition to the core establishment they were finished. i'll get interested when you hear a more moderate language from the top hezbollah leadership. so far, the opposite is the case.

Hizbollah ran the IDF out of Lebanon in 2000. Thanks to Hizbollah, Lebanon is the only territory occupied by Israel for any appreciable time in which no settlements were built. Israel is an aggressive, expanding, oppressive, occupying power. It makes sense for Israels neighbors to be as well armed as possible.

When Reagan was President Hezbollah set off a bomb at the Marine barracks in Beruit killing a lot of Marines. Other than that I know of no terrorist acts . Hezbollah seems to have evolved into a political para-military organization. Pretty much the same way the Haganah, a Jewish terrorist organization, evolved into the IDF. During the last Lebanon war Hezbollah captured two Israeli soldiers hoping to trade them for a lot of people kidnapped from Lebanon and held in Israeli prisons. Israel launched a massive military adventure with the stated goals of freeing the two captives and destroying Hezbollah. Hezbollah fought the Israelis while the Lebanese army sat in their barracks refusing to engage the invadeing Israeli army. Hezbollah made a serious effort to protect the country and prevented Israel from achieving their stated goals. Hezbollah has since won seats in the government and continue to improve their military assets as a first line of defense from any attack from Israel.

..you forgot, rather trying to jump over historical facts , to mention your aggressions against Lebanon since 1949 and then your first occupation 1978 .. Hezbollah was founded as a respond to your aggressions here and there and your attempts to humiliate the Lebanese nation which you cant fool any but ur self about it , specially during the 1982 invasion; killing innocents, estimated by ten of thousands who have nothing to do with PLO, demolishing villages and further occupying Beirut . You even tried to set up settlements in Kafershouba (south Lebanon) .. Hizbollah very first core units were established after the second occupation on 1982 the official Manifesto of the party was announced only by 1985..some facts I wont hurt , it will certainly though if you tried to deny and continue to threats and challenge our people !

the idea that hezbollah, which is an iranian proxy, would have "moderate elements" is amazing nonsense. hezbollah is a radical shia islamist group which takes its orders from the "jurisprudent," namely, the grand ayatollah khameini. hezbollah is wholly funded, trained and armed by iran. hezbollah does not have factions. hezbollah, meaning the "party of god," is a vertically structured and fully integrated group.

The fact that hezbollah is actually a breakaway group from an earlier one that's aim was to remove the Palestinians from Lebanon shows that they were not always so anti Israel although thats what they have come to be now. The group has transformed so much in its history and is now a large social provider for the Lebanese people. The US may as well try to promote moderate parts of the group, the political side over the terrorist side perhaps have what happened to Sien Fien and the IRA in Ireland. What harm can it do, but the benefits could be large.

The tenacity of the Western schemes to keep Arab and Muslim peoples under their sphere of dominance is formidable. They always have multi-layers appeoachs. Lebanon ethnic groups are well known for their inclination to make deals for immediate gains. Principles, national sovereignity and other values can be compromised for a little pay. Hezbullah came to prominance in the lebanese scene by reneging traditional dealing and wheeling. It became an instant household reality to ndesperate and humiliated Arabs when it was able to cut Israel myth of invincibilty in pieces twice. ending the occupation and dispanding the once feared SLA and defeating a world supported aggression against Lebanon that had for the first time Arab regimes openly siding with their 'ennemy -Israel' . Now the West is back to divide and conquer, ie. trying what worked for Gen. Patreaus in Iraq (Sahwat) and officer Lawrence (of Arabia) decades before (WW I). If Iran is brought to its knee, may be then Hezbullah would be broken.

Only the besotted Arabists in the US State DEpartment can possibly come up with a delusional take that there are moderate elements in Hizbullah. Hisbullah has only one objective -- to control Lebanon and force all its citizens to become Shiite Muslims at the point of a sword. Its desire to destroy Israel is only a means toward achieving this goal as, in the Middle East, the more you hate Israel the greater your chances of winning popular support by the illiterate mob of benighted Arabs.
