Turkey's highest circulating newspaper Hurriyet on Sunday released photos of Israeli navy commandos who had been embroiled in the clash aboard the Gaza-bound Turkish aid ship Mavi Marmara last week.

The Israel Defense Forces released a video depicting the activists aboard the ship attacking the navy commandos. The activists argued that they had been attacked first. Nine activists were killed in the melee, and dozens, including Israeli soldiers, were hurt.

The photos published by Hurriyet on Sunday, under the headline "tears of a commando", Israeli soldiers are seen beaten and bleeding, being carried below deck by Turkish activists.

In the accompanying article, the paper reported that the photos had been censored and deleted by Israeli fighters aiming to prevent embarrassment for Israel and the IDF, but the activists were able to restore them. The paper further reported that in some of the photos, activists belonging to the IHH organization are seen caring for the wounded soldiers.

IHH is the group that organized the flotilla that attempted to carry tons of aid to the blockaded Gaza Strip last week. The Mavi Marmara was one of eight ships that participated in the effort.

The IDF Spokesperson's Unit issued a response to the Turkish photos, saying that the "published pictures serve as clear and unequivocal proof of Israel's repeated arguments that aboard [the Mavi Marmara] were mercenaries who intended to kill Israeli soldiers."

"The photos would have looked different if the soldiers had chosen to shoot every citizen that came their way," the statement continued. "It was only out of empowerment and a deep understanding of the event that the navy commandos were able to tell the difference between peace activists and terrorists."

Meanwhile, senior officials in the Israeli Foreign Ministry said Saturday that Israel has no intention of apologizing for the Mavi Marmara raid. The remarks were made in the wake of Turkish threats to sever diplomatic ties with Israel if the latter failed to apologize for harm caused to Turkish citizens.

Good in the short term, because it clearly shows, that Israeli troops were not welcomed with roses on the big flotilla ship. But very bad in the long term, because the pictures are extremely embar- rassing for the IDF, and they make Israel look incredibly weak and vulnerable in the eyes of the Arab/Muslim world, which will certainly rather increase the possibility of future armed conflicts in the region, should there be no breakthrough on a viable Palestinian state over the next 15 months......

So people, commando's board your ship with guns... what do you do...try to talk to them?..the worst part is that the isreali cabinet took 1 week prior to the arrival of the Flotilla to come up with this resolution...it took place in International waters..anything goes...who outweighed the other?....strange that israel had an overkill of weapons to deal with something! 9 dead (civilians/activists)...7 israeli's hurt (bruised, couple of cuts)..who's better off?? a few questions to be answered..dont you think?

The photos show that they didnt want to kill soldiers, rather than kill them, as the IDF spokesperson cleverly spinned it. You have proof that commandos were literally in the arms of activists, if they wanted to kill them they would have done it on the spot

If the aid workers wanted to kill these crying commandos they would have done it easly. They would have killed other soldiers by using these stupid guy's rifles but they just wanted to make them scare but the other soldiers came later and shot people randomly. Most of them were shot in the back what brave killers. if they knew that the other soldiers was going to shoot . Your cyring commandos and many others was going to be dead

When your commandos get beaten and taken hostage by civilians armed with pipes what do you do? answer: make it look like a sign of the commandos restraint rather than weakness. Spin!

Turkey needs to be expelled from NATO. The actions of it's government show it to be nothing less than an Islamic State in the same vein as Iran.

Only people killed were peace-activists - by soldiers who had supposedly no intention to kill - hmmmm

Beaten israeli commandos, are u sure? What kind of commandos are there? They enter a ship on international waters, give their weapons to peple which have no guns and Haaretzs claims, the soldiers were innocent. By the way, israely army should fire these commandos and send them back to the kindergarten.

1.As a Turk, I do not blame the Israeli commandos because they have been put into this trouble due to bad leadership and operational planning. Nobody wants to be in their situation. 2.On the other hand, the course of action chosen by Israeli leadership (political and military) was the worst they can choose. They have attacked a ship well off the territorial waters of Israel. And on the other hand, do not forget that Gazza is not part of Israel. They should be clever enough to handle the situation more smooth way. I believe there were other options. 3.If this incident should have been occurred vice versa, I mean if an Israel ship has been attacked at international waters and dozens Jews who are only carrying bars&sticks would have been killed by some other countries armed soldiers, than Israel would probably try to take revenge and would probably assassinate the planners and executers of this operation that caused civilian Jewish lives. 4.Please be honest to yourself. I understand your will to support your troops BUT there is a very big mess that your troops left behind because of bed leadership not at tactical level but at operational and strategic level. 5. No tactical success can prevent a failure at operational and strategic level.

Let the Turks first apologize for the Armenian massacres of 1915 the deliberate and systematic destruction (genocide) of the Armenian population of the Ottoman Empire during and just after World War I by the Turkish Army, implemented through wholesale massacres and deportations, with the deportations consisting of forced marches under conditions designed to lead to the death of the deportees.

Israel wanted these photos published in the world press to show the brutality of the hired thugs aboard this Hamas supporting flotilla. So they pretended to delete them from the cameras expecting that the Turkish press would publish them in an attempt to embarrass Israel. The trick worked and now the world (and the investigators) can see these soldiers did need to take action to defend themselves from a life threatening attack. And since the source of the publication is Turkey itself, who can challenge this?
