Three IDF soldiers wounded by explosion on Israel-Gaza border
Investigation under way into explosive device detonated on southern part of Israel-Gaza border, which left one soldier wounded lightly to moderately, and two others lightly wounded.
Three Israel Defense Forces soldiers were wounded on Tuesday morning in an explosion on the Gaza Strip border.
In the early hours of the morning, an explosion was heard near Kibbutz Nirim, near the southern part of the Gaza Strip.
The IDF estimates that an explosive device that was detonated at the site was what caused the soldiers' wounds.
One of the soldiers appears to have been lightly to moderately wounded, a military official said. The other two were lightly wounded.
The lightly-moderately wounded soldier received medical treatment at the site before being taken by helicopter to Soroka Medical Center in Be'er Sheva.
At the time of the explosion, military forces present at the site were patrolling the border fence.
Some two weeks ago, a roadside bomb was detonated in the same area, seriously wounding a company commander from the Givaty Brigade, Capt. Ziv Shilon, who had arrived at the site to open one of the border fence gates. Hamas later assumed responsibility for detonating the bomb.
Over the past few weeks, the IDF has identified repeated attempts in the Gaza Strip to harm military activity taking place along the border fence and nearby. Tuesday's incident is the fourth to take place in the past three weeks in which military forces operating along the border fence have been wounded. On October 26 an explosive device was detonated in southern Gaza, near Kisufim, damaging an army vehicle. That same week, mortar shells were fired toward IDF soldiers that were patrolling the border.
This week, a ceremony took place to change commanders of the Gaza Division. Brig. Gen. Miki Edelstein, one of the most experienced commanders in the IDF today, replaced Brig. Gen. Yossi Bachar on Sunday. At the ceremony, Brig. Gen. Edelstein said, "The enemy before us stands to challenge our liberty as a nation and a state. The events that have taken place over the past weeks show that the terrorist elements in Gaza are constantly seeking new ways of harming us. This reality requires we prepare for all events, at all times, at all places."
