Sheldon Adelson to Birthright group: Gingrich is right to call Palestinians 'invented people'
U.S. billionaire tells group of Jewish youth on Israel birthright tour that many Palestinians also agree with U.S. presidential hopeful's controversial remarks.
By Revital Blumenfeld Tags: Palestinians Jewish Diaspora Jewish World Benjamin NetanyahuAmerican billionaire Sheldon Adelson, who is a close ally of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and owner of the Israeli daily Israel Hayom, said on Sunday that he agreed with Republican Presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich’s controversial remarks that the Palestinians are an invented people.
Gingrich’s "invented Palestinians" remarks to the Jewish Channel, a U.S. cable TV network, earlier this month were met with widespread criticism.

Addressing a Hanukkah celebration for hundreds of youths visiting Israel as part of the Taglit Birthright program on Sunday, Adelson said, “Read the history of those who call themselves Palestinians, and you will hear why [Newt] Gingrich said recently that the Palestinians are an invented people. There are a number of Palestinians who will recognize the truth of this statement.”
Adelson also appealed to the hundreds of Jewish youth in the audience to study history and be “goodwill ambassadors” for Israel.
“When you return to your countries of origin, speak in support of Israel – don’t let Muslim student organizations take over the campuses. Learn history, go back to the Ottoman Empire and the First World War, and know the issue under discussion, and when you return to our homes you will remember that you are goodwill ambassadors for Israel,” Adelson said.
Adelson and other speakers, including Minister of Information and Disapora Yuli Edelstein, addressed Jewish youth from around the world who are taking part in a ten-day Taglit Birthright tour of Israel to coincide with Hannukah.
Over 290,000 young Jews from 54 countries around the world have visited Israel as part of the Taglit Birthright program, which aims to forge links between young Diaspora Jews and Israel. The Adelson family has been one of the main donors of the Taglit program in the past six years.

before WW2 The Palestine Post (now the Jerusalem Post) was the Jewish English-language newspaper, The Palestine Orchestra (now the Israel Philharmonic) was a Jewish orchestra, The United Palestine Appeal, an American charity, raised money to resettle homeless Jews from Europe in Palestine, Arabs living in the territory of Palestine were called “Arabs” and only very occasionally “Palestinian Arabs” and for two decades before they lost the Six-Day War in 1967 Arabs controlled the entire West Bank, the Gaza Strip and half of Jerusalem - they could have established a Palestinian state anytime they wanted, they never tried; the famous UN Resolution 242, which ended the Six-Day War, makes no reference to Palestinians, but just refers to “refugees” until the 1970s palestinian nationalism was almost unheard-of; it had to be invented after 1967 still, that doesn't mean palestinian arabs shouldn't have a state called "palestine" and finally live in peace and prosperity - the problem is, they never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity to finally get it
The former is not news. Alas by now the latter isn't news either.
I cannot believe these hallucinations. It's beyond comprehension that people would even utter such bull feathers. What countries existed before man roamed the Earth? There you go: they're ALLLLLLLLLL man-made. The people in it are touchable, pinchable, and they will bite back: they are real. Chimpanzees make sense of this without instruction.
So if your ancestors never fought and went on conquests and thus became a recognized empire or kingdom like the roman, assyrian, then the you are not allowed to be a unique, independant, self- determined people. well arabs have been in palestine since the 7th century, thats a history of 1400 years, if your prepared to brush away this history just because the individuals there were always part of a greater empire(ottoman, british) and were never independent, than your a bigot. and hence zionism = racism in that case. but its ok for jews to resurrect their kingdom from 2000 frigin years ago i.e. from the time of jesus
FIRST of all invented peoples is What they call the American people. Most African peoples( If defined by their countries' borders) are an invention of colonial powers and slave traders. Even the jews can be called ""an invented people" as there's no cultural/ethnic/racial link between people like Sheldon Adelson and, let's say, Yuli Edelstein mentioned above. they have different histories, different cultural background etc... YET, they feel they belong to the same people, the jewish people. But what they clain for themselves they think they have the right to deny the Palestinians. what has this jewish people become?.
there was no arabs in Israels until they occupied it 1300y ago by FORCE/tTERROR/Murder
The first and only truth about this matter (invented people) can be found in the Torah. ...."i will provoke them with a non-people (loh am) (palestinians?), and anger them with a vile nation (Islam?) (Deut 32;21)
Your exegesis of the biblical text is remarkable and ingenious. Maybe you could run for president too!
Hi Israel, There never is and never was a Palestine. Palestinian was a invented word of what is arabs and the real arabs are the Jews too. For Abraham is a Jew or Hebrew. So for what ever these Muslims wanted to be pure and claim "Abraham a their ancestor, then these arabs are Jews themselves. regards - Truth
Wrong! The inheritance passed down only through the children of the legitimate wife, Sarah (nee, Sarai), not through the slave girl/concubine, Hagar. The Bible/Torah says so.
1- I decend from a region that is called Palestine, and from a city that is called Jerusalem which is a city of Palestine 2- We have our cultural traditions in this region that are unique and resemble no other traditions in the world, including our own folokloric songs, our unique traditional dress, our unique dishes, our unique spoken dialect. 3- Our region does have natural borders. You can call us Jews if you want because a subculture of the Judean region of Palestine has its unique chararacter as well and that I am part of that region. One thing you can't call me, and that is "Israeli" because this is a modern state that was created on the wrecks of our Palestinian, Jewish entities.
that they couldn't stand another Jewish revolt and as Josephus said he was proud of the Jewish people for standing up to the evil empire, the only folks that did. Jerusalem is the city of David btw, the whole world knows it, if you live in Israel you are an Israeli, too bad
Jews, Christians, and Muslims: all the same 'people'. Then along came the Zionists to disrupt what was, absorbing the Jews from among them as their own, while pushing aside the Christian and Muslims who THEN had the 'need' - which had never there before - to i-d-e-n-t-f-y themselves indigenous to the homeland they lived in since the time the ancestors of the zionists had fled - while THEIRS had remained. Time to put the zionist fairy tales to rest - because if you don't call them "Palestinian" - and accept them as that - then the only honest alternative is to call them "Hebrews"
Wrong! The philitines were exterminated to the last drop of DNA by the Babylonians after the conquest of Jerusalem. Then they, like the Assyrians before them, imported other captured peoples from their conquered lands to work the fields in the newly captured lands of Juda (and philitia). The newbies are what is left in the land today along with the Arabs that migrated into the area from Medina.
BULL!
israel as a nation has mongul pedigree. Composite of citizens of every nationality and race, united only through religion. Since the destruction of the second temple, biblical jewish race have for the last 1800 years been erased. Very few serious scholars in recent times have believed in "the Jews" as a single ethno-biological people or "race". There is no biological connection with the pre-70 AD jews
Still not entirely true! Israel was the name given to Jacob by YHWH-God and it has always been used alternately with Jacob to refer to the Hebrew children collectively.
What a stupid remark by a stupid politician aimed at gaining support of the not-so-educated jews and others. The term is appealing I must agree but only for one minute. The fact remains: Israel continues to exterminate the arabs (christians and muslims) exactly the same way the nazis did do the jews, but without the systematic burning in the ovens. Because that would be anti-semitic. It is sad that Israel turned out to be another genocidal country no matter how subtle a way they try to exterminate the arabs. History is being written.
AND YES THE ARAB PALESTINIANS ARE AN INVENTION BY ARAFAT.ET AL.IN one of my posts I remonstrated the FACT during the British Mandate it was the Jews who were called =Plestinians the Rest merely Arabs...Having said this..Can anyone tell me if Palestinians existed (ever) Who was their king...,was there ever any archeological finds pertaining them EVER FOUND..And many more relevant things no time to put forward here.Truth is: they belong to many diverse Muslim arabs who invaded in the past ,Left and while ALL THE DYNASTIES WHO OCCUPIED HOLLY ISRAEL.CAME AND DISAPPEARED.............While we Jews are still here.............
Yes. Although the Brits did wrong in their partitioning of the lands of Israel. And, for that wrong, they lost their own Empire at the hands of YHWH-God. Consider Obadiah 1:15, What ever you have done to Israel will be done to you.... Vengeance is mine, says the Lord. I will repay!
a rose by any other name smells as sweet. Whether they are called Palestinian, whether Gangerinich says they're invented or Adelson thinks the same so does not matter. These people are on the ground and have the inalienable right to self determination in their country Palestine, PERIOD.
Adelson is following in the steps of Gingrich, the candidate who wants to be "stupid" in chief. Gingrich missed a deadline to get enough signatures to be on the ballot in Virginia. Heck, Virginia is where he lives, his own freaking state. How can this dumb ass miss a deadline to be on the ballot in his own state?
They can never be good neighbours ! 2-State solution was given a good chance and lasted for almost 20 years & ended in all the Arab Countries went to wars to-gather to remove Israel from the face of the world. This must never happen again ! Abbas the moderate joined the Terrorists over night !
And who invented them? Did they invent themselves? That makes them creators, that makes them Gods.
Didn't God "invent" all people? Or, for the more anthropoligically, genetically and evolutionary inclined, didn't all mankind come out of a specific region(s) in East and South Africa? All means ALL.
Newt received PHD in History so he new what he has said. He just had more guts then other people. Indeed in the classic movie "Excodus" (1960) the word "Palestinian" is mentioned many times, but it always has meant a Jew, not Arab. And nobody was surprised at that time.
is that the Palestinians recognise Israel as the homeland for the Jews. But why should they do that when it is now slowly but surely getting bon-ton to deny that there is such a people as Palestinians?
Who would have believed it? Haaretz is the last entity to find that the Palestinians do not have a history other than during the past 150 years. One would think that the as far as Haaretz is concerned that the Jews with thousands of years of history would have and should have a stronger claim when it comes to the core issues. Dream on buddy.
For argument, say the 3 million people living in the occupied lands only have 150 years of relatives who lived there in the most recent period. Further, lets agree that the Jews were driven out by the Romans and went on to live happily in many other countries and not so happily in others. You must agree that the Jews efforts to return to Israel prior to the 20th century were e half-hearted until the holocaust. You must also agree that when the UN created the modern state of Israel, there were several million people who, by your account had been living on the land for at least 150 years. Who has the greatest claim to the lalnd, those whose relatives were living there when the modern state of Israel was created or those whose relatives left 2000 years ago?
and whether you wanna call them palestinians or xyz, these people existed much before you did.
"Granfalloons," Kurt Vonnegut called them. I'm a believing Jew and patriotic American but will happily admit that both categorizations are arbitrary, as is that of Palestinian. Every nation has a random, invented beginning if you look back far enough. The important thing is that there are millions of people who define themselves by and who would happily die for the Palestinian flag -- just as many live and die for Judaism and Israel. In other words...two states for two peoples, still the only just solution to the conflict.
I have to admit that I didn't agree with Newt (I don't on anything), but his statements made some sense to me. I think you just put it best. You changed my thoughts on this.
Wrong! Some of them, like the children of Jacob knowns as Israel are created by YHWH-God.
Guess what: I believe that, too. But Palestinians have their own beliefs that are just as strong. Given that you're not going to suddenly convince them that they're "really just Jordanians" (the same way they will never convince us that we're "really just Europeans"), you have only two choices: kill them or live with them. I simply cannot believe the Creator of the Universe and the Creator of Israel, wants us to be like Nazis.
And should be treated as such.
Adelson is not nearly so much a threat as George Soros.
Just open the King James version of the Bible and see for your self what the first page reads: "Palestine in Jesus Times".
It took Basel' s zionist conference , Balfour declaration, immigrant at the shore of Palestine and tens of vetoes by an usurped US foreign policy to institutionalize the ethnic cleansing of of the Palestinians. Israel will never, ever be a legitimate nation. It is the brainchild of colonialist powers who until this moment annot deal with the Jewish political and economical powers after the holocaust of Hitler. Two wrongs don't make a right except in Zionist minds and for that that want to marginalized Jews in their home country by forcibly painting them first and foremost as Jews. Any of The three great religions holy books describe in vivid colors the assembly and the wiping of the jews. I am amased at the inevitability of this death march.
Yes, the Palestinians are an "invented" people.....but so are we as so called Americans. Before the revolution we were English. If there are true Americans, they should be called Indians or native Americans. But his stupidity does not stop there. What are the Syrians, Saudis, Lebanese, Jordanians, Iraqis, Most of Africa, Canadians, Mexico and most of Latin and South America, Serbia, Bosnia and on and on. What is Gingrich trying to say? Is he saying that Palestinians have no right to define themselves as a nation? Today the overwhelming majority of Israelis do not accept the kind of nonsense put forth by Gingrich. Israel cannot survive demographically as a binational state without surpressing millions of people and losing any semblance of being a democratic state with protections for all people. You don't have to love Palestinians to know that the survival of Israel depends on bringing about a Palestinian state we can live with. Gingrich who is supposedly a historian has little understanding and faulty information. He is not a historian, but instead he is a pandering political hack.
...you put it perfectly
You mix apples and oranges, and create confusion in people's mind. Yes, Jordan, Syria and the rest on your list are artificially created countries (not people). All of them were created as the result of some historical process like a war. Regarding the Palestinians, they were recently invented by an inventor (we all know his name). I think this is what Newt was trying to say.
No doubts, all facts are there in just recent history. I repeat zionist are invented religion and invented people.
Zionist are invented, Israelis are invented as well. Zionist are not people in my opinion, they are criminals and use the jewish religion and history to advance their political and economic powers in the region. Jews do not like zionists. Newt Gingrich: you must choose between zionist and Jews. I think you will choose zionist because they will fund your elections. You will not win. I'm a jew and will not vote for someone like you who is trying to erase another nation history. Just open the King James version bible and the first page is "Palestine in Jesus Times". I rest my case.
WEhat is MORE pertinent ZIONISM IS A BADGE OF HONOR FOR JEWS & ISRAEL..Zionism=Judaism. READ the Holy Bibble ( oh and the song) By the rivers of Babylon 21st century song why did they and do you know its historical narrative ) I suggest you change your name to abdallah then you can SHOUT: ALLAH HU AKBAR,.(Idiot)
Mr. Gingrich who claims to know some history MUST read "Study of History" by one of the greatest historins in the 20th century Arnold Toynbee who states that the jews had never had a civlization of their own but existed on the perifery of other civiliazation and now they talk about invented people???????????
But inyour twisted way you are basing on only oner book...Incidently take Benny Morris 's books .He has been writing controversially ,but in his latest book his comments changed the reverse of what he had written peviously..That is how historical writers tend to say something thenCHANGE THE NARRATIVE in their next publications...
Morris changed his politics but did not change his facts. If anything his last book "1948" makes it clear that there was an ethnic conflict between two entrenched peoples claiming rights in the same land and that one was victorious in the war and the other never even to this day reconciled itself to the permanency of the zionist enterprise. His analysis, BTW, of the causes of the refugees issue continues to bust the myths of both sides.
Israelis are invented people. You don't have to go back far in history to know that. Start reading since 1948. you can do it.
If that's the case then australians, south africans, canadians, the english, french, polish, russians are all invented too
SO,ISLAM CAME BEFORE JUDAISM ,NOT TO MENTION CHRISTIANITY. THAT JESUS TAUGHT HIS DECIPLES FROM THE JEWISH BIBLE,NEVER DEVIATED FROM IT EITHER., ALSO YOU THINK JESUS WAS ( an invented Jew)??
The only blond haired - blue eyed person in the Middle East
Read 'The Thirteenth Tribe' by Arthur Koestler.
All peoples at some stage were 'invented'. Just like there was no Palestine, there was no Israel until 1948 and by creating Israel, Palestinians were created. You can't deny there are people living on the 'invented' land, whether you call them Palestinians or arabs, whose ancestors had been living there for hundreds of years and who have all the rights to claim that land and establish a state there. No country in this world came to exist as a result of an organic process, all of them were shaped through interactions with other countries/ethnic groups (e.g. Israel, US) and are based on historic events. Just like the Palestinian state will one day be shaped by history. Whether you consider these people invented or not doesn't give anyone the right to treat them like animals: the simple fact is that they are human beings living on their ancestral land having the same basic human rights like any other 'invented' people. Thus making the discussion whether they or invented or not irrelevant. As for Gingrich and the so-called American democracy: it is sad to see that American presidential candidates have to bow for certain ethnic groups in order to grab the presidency, What policy can we expect from this kind of opportunists? Politics is a serious game that affects all of us, I think the US and the world deserve better.
I will be making some speeches to birthrighters when they arrive as to why Adelson is a revisionist clown and perhaps how one may also start a Palestinian birthright organization. We need two states here with Jerusalem as a shared capital in the context of dialogue.
and who do you propose would fund such a birthright? i don't think terrorist organisations would be happy to part with their funds...
There already is an organisation like this, Birthright Unplugged. (Google the name and you'll find the website.) Jewish participants are also welcome to join in with its activities - in fact, people who have travelled with Birthright Israel sometimes end their stay with a tour organised by Birthright Unplugged.
The truth is that this country was once a malarial swmp until the Jews arrived. There were not many herdsman living around here. When the English allowed Syrians, Iraqis and Iranians into Palestina most of the malaria and trachoma was cleared up by Jewish doctors. If anybody has a right to this country it is the Jews. It is they through hard work that made living possible in this country. They cleared the stones away not the so called Palestinians. They did absolutely nothing for this country. Some of them may have lived here for centuries but they did not contribute one iota to this country. Since this contry was made attractive through the hard labor of Jews the so called Palestinians claim it as their own.
If eredicating malaria or other deseases gives people the right to take other people's land, then European countries should go back to Africa and reconquer their old colonies. When the Belgians invaded Congo in the late 1800's there were no Congolese. There were indigenous people living on the land without any title deeds or nationality. The Belgians bought land from local village elders who sold them land that didin't belong to them, very much like what happened in Palestine when the first Jewish settlers moved in. The Belgans also tried to eredicate tropical deseases and claimed to develop a country that otherwise was still part of the dark ages. The invented people called Congolese fortunately got their independence and self-rule just like many other African countries during the 1960's. No one denies their right to exist. As for your claim that it were the Jews who worked the land: you might want to inform yourself about the thousands of Arab villages that were erased or turned into Jewish villages soon after Israeli independence. These things are well documented, you just have to be willing to see them.
this is a truly ignorant misunderstanding of this region's history. respected historians like albert hourani have traced developments during the late ottoman periods to the industrialization and beginning of bureaucratization of this region and said had it not been subject to colonialism and all of colonialisms residue, the arabs would have developed their own style of democracy...all of this was wrecked when these nations were split and manipulated and left in shabbles. If you have any questions about Arab potential, look at Ismail's reign in Egypt...or, even though Turkey is not Arab, the Turks were not subject to colonialism, and their country (at least in the cities) is even more developed than Israel (I have lived in both places, I can say this from experience). Israel is still a colonizer, what on earth do you expect from the Palestinians? What have you expected from them since the beginning...to roll over and just die? To just allow their homes and land to be taken from them without any sort of fight? Because they were "underdeveloped" gives someone a right to steal property from another person? You are a real trip!
And from your MOUTH TO GODS EARS.. Truth in essense ..From the beginning to the end of the Narrative ..onhow the Early Jewish pioneers came to the holy land in the 1800's and worked like slaves to establish a modicum of country that was in a dreadful state..And ho the surrounding peoples saw the mitracle coming drom various Arab lands from as far as Bosnia,& the rest to settle in. But YOU,I,and many others know of it,but the bashers puroposefully DISTORT IT.
As for your claim that it were the Jews who worked the land: you might want to inform yourself about the thousands of Arab villages that were erased or turned into Jewish villages soon after Israeli independence. These things are well documented, you just have to be willing to see them. But you forgot to mention the reason why and how chum,The minute Israel was reborn till trying to survive.Four+ Armies attacked Nascent Israel. They LOST & Israel survived & still trying to survive. As forthe aforementioned villages: They are still htere in the majority Some were bought with HARD CASH by the wealty Arabs .The population of Arab are still there. They would not countenance relocating to any Arab brothers countries as their LIFE would be unbreable..Why do you think they prefer to lve in Israel? Think before you make a bigger fool of yourself Wish yiou were Geert Wilders he would put the RECORD Straight fo you ( idiotic comm, ent)
Do you really think that there is no history before the late Ottoman Empire? Your ignorance and arrogance is showing, humanist. Tuck your stupidity back into your britches.
let's keep the record straight...
dnt worry mate, u can always call alan dreshowfuck
Gingritch's ancestors were invented in Germany and I invented America, believe it or not. Sort of reinventing Gingritch or clonong him. You decide!
The correct spelling of his name is all over this page
So ? is it more interesting to correct the spelling of some guy who does know anything about palestinians ? i dont' think so. This "Grainngritsh" is a farce anyway.
And ridiculous to watch them maintain that because the Arabs of Palestine were not usually called Palestinians 100 years ago they have no rights in Palestine. Or indeed that they don't exist.
Why should palestinians care about THAT ? palestinians know where they belong. Adelson unlike many other Congress members wouldn't tell the difference between an arab, a turk or a persian. They're all "islamists" ?? right ?
Is denying the Holocaust, a historical event that many people argue over, worse than denying the history of the Palestinian people? Palestine is full of churches, mosques, cities and villages that testify to the history of Palestinians in Palestine. Does Gingrich or Adelson want, or dare, to put the evidence that testifies to the existence of the Palestinian people against the evidence that testifies to the occurence of the Holocaust? Let both issues be open to intellectual, open, and free discussions (and without the fear of incrimination) and let's see which one stands the test of scientific investigation and validation.
Jews as a nationality go back at least 2500 years, despite TB's belief to the contrary. "Americans" were invented, as he says, in the 18th century -- quite deliberately invented. And "Belgians" and "Italians" were invented in the 19th century. The rational reaction to such statements, it seems to me, ought to be, "So what?"

palestinian as a british mandate term was primarily for jews not arabs ever , nor was the mandate for arabs at all ..

And, anything that happened before you were born and became self-aware is still in the ether of non-existance, right?.
jews are an invented people.
There never has been a jewish people. They confuse religion with nation, which is something very different.
in history we know jews the same as we know muslims, christians, Buddhists, hindus etc. we have never heard or learned about israelis!! they have never existed before!! no one can deny it!!, Palestinians have been living in paelstine for thousands of years as palestinians!! israeli government and historians says so , romans named it palestine and named them palestinians, well thats hundreds of years before israel!! so go home so called israelis. jews are welcomed in palestinian state but not israelis or zionists. salam peace shalom
The name Jews is derivative from Judea, the last kingdom from the Israel people that felt under the romans. Thus the name Jews. The Israelites existed long before. You can, for example take a look at the Kingdom of Israel under King David's rule.
they are not since they have a state of their own. Furthermore, this question has two issues : Yes there was never an independant people as palestinians as they were sujects of the romain empire, ottoman empire or british Empire BUT this doesn't mean these palestinians (as they used this identity since 1967) have no right to freely live on their part of this land. I repeat 2 states for 2 people. A palestinian state alongside with a less nationalistic jewish state.
Sorry Muhannad, you're not entirely correct on that one. Israelis did exist, they just didn't have that name. Jews have always been known as the Nation of Israel. In fact, they were Israel until the start of the diaspora 2000 years ago, then we became "Jews" after the tribe of Judea. Modern Palestinians are decedents of Arab conquerors who invaded roughly 1400 years ago (meaning Arabs did not reside there for "thousands of years"). Additionally, many Palestinians today are decedents of Sahaladin's army, who were actually Kurdish. The name "Palestine" comes from the Romans who named provinces in Latin. A province in Northern Africa was simply named Africa, but does that mean that it's the focal point of Africa now? No.
The Israeli government acknowledged in 1993 that there is a "Palestinian people" when they recognized that the PLO was the sole representative of said "people". Israel gave that recognition in black and white, so there is not much point arguing otherwise.
you can call a goat a lion but it never will be one . what they recognised was fraud perpetrated on israel by the usual useful idiots .
israel recognised the local arabs as palestininian, in the hope that it would stop or lessen arab terror. it worked just the opposite, it increased it. so the humanitarian thing to do would be to remove that recognition and save innocent human lives
... 60 years under the israeli boot would make a people out of anybody.
every people is 'invented', stupid. its just a matter of timing.
What history currency government did they have before 1967
My family is from Jerusalem and they consider themselves as palestinians. Why should we care about you Joe ? deny as much as you want. WE DON'T CARE.
I can go on,but it is getting boring..Gingrich or NOT WE KNOW Awho we are have been for over 4.000+ Years..And by golly let us ADD Jesus the Jew born in The HOLY land ..teaching from the Jewish holy Bible..WHAT IS MORE HE DESPISED THE GENTILES.( read the part where he told he syrian woman wen she asked for his help)that he will not give the CRUMBS to her meant for his people) Read that part./.
You obviously DO care or you wouldn't post so much mendacious drivel all the itme!
Yes, the "Palestinians" are an "invented" people. But what effect and consequence does that fact have on the land rights and right of return claimed by the "Palestinians"? Sheldon Adelson was agreeing with remarks made by Gingrich. When it boils down to it, on a technical level, Gingrich is actually CORRECT! However, he was also attemting to conflate or outright trying to deceive as to the implications the "inventedness" has regarding the effect and consequence on the land rights and right of return claimed by the "Palestinians". Lets replace "Palestine" in Gingrinch's words, and say "Remember, there was no Lebanon, Iraq, Morocco, Jordan, as states either. Each was part of the Ottoman Empire" until the early 20th century. Gingrich could also truthfully have said that, as he had stated about Palestine. However, those facts wouldn't lead one to then say "I think that we've had an invented Lebanese people, Iraqi people, Moroccan people, Jordanian people who are in fact Arabs, and who historically are part of the Arab community", so as to suggest they too have no ancient historical rights to remain or return to their respective lands, or that they must find elsewhere to settle; and for those still there, that they must complete their own expulsion by leaving, and accept with gratefulness their ethnic-cleansing. Yet this is what he suggested about Palestinians. Are the Lebanese not entitled to Lebanon simply because they no longer go by the term Phoenicians, and because they now call Phoenicia by the name of Lebanon? Are the "Lebanese" not the same people as the Phoenicians, and is "Lebanon" not the same land as Phoenicia, whatever name the people use for the land and themselves today? Yes, the ethnonyms of "Lebanese", "Iraqi", "Palestinian", etc are modern inventions. But the people themselves, their blood and their DNA are real, they are not invented, and more so, they are ANCIENT. Also true is that the blood and DNA of each of these "Arab" nationalities are distinct from each other. They have separate historical roots. Simply saying "It's about time for the truth and deconstruction: the Pals are Arabs no different that any other Arab group," as was verbalised by one contributor, does not make that statement true. That each "Arab" nationality speaks Arabic, and that each now has Arab culture, and that most (though not all) are Muslim, has to do with nothing other than acculturation and religious conversion. Even then, often times forced, or through social pressures. However, that does no mean that miraculously their DNA became "Arabian", which is what "true Arabs" are. Not "Arabized Arabs" such as Palestinians, Lebanese, Egyptians, Moroccans, Iraqis, etc... This is confirmed by modern DNA. Christian and Muslims "Lebanese" are Phoenicians. "Iraqi" Muslims and Christians are Babylonians/Mesopotamians. "Morrocans" are Berbers. And most shockingly, "Palestinians" are Hebrews. DNA confirms it! Arab is a cultural-linguistic identity! It is not a genealogical entity. Nor is it a religious one, since not all Arabs are Muslim, and since most Muslims are non-Arabs (largely South East Asians such as Indonesians and Malaysians, and South Asians such as Pakistanis and Bangladeshis plus Indian Muslims, and not to mention black Africans and White Balkan European Muslims). "And they [Palestinians] had a chance to go many places, and for a variety of political reasons we have sustained this war against Israel now since the 1940s, and it's tragic," Gingrich said. I'm sorry. "Palestinians", or whatever you want to call them or not call them, have sustained a resistance. Not a war. And they did not go to other places, whether there was a chance to do so or not, because the land they remained on is the land they belong to, as it is for those "Palestinians" who want to return. Palestinians do not have any right or obligation to relocate to other "Arab" countries anymore than Puerto Ricans have to a right or obligation to move to Argentina, Mexico, Peru, Costa Rica, Cuba, Colombia or Chile, etc, if say, the USA wanted Puerto Rico free of Puerto Ricans. Would we say, "Puerto Ricans have many Hispanic countries to go to, why wont they just leave Puerto Rico for us?". Of course we wouldn't say that. But we do say it when it comes to the Palestinians. When the world's Jews and the Palestinians recognise that each is a part of the other, then there will be peace. But with people like the politician who spewed such ignorance, be they pro-Israeli or pro-Palestinian, then we have no hope. David Ben-Gurion knew it. So did other early Israeli leaders. And so did the members of the Old Yishuv. that the "Arabs" of the Land of Israel, which the world today knows by the name of "Palestinians", are in fact Hebrews by DNA. Maybe not by language anymore. Nor by culture. Nor by religion (since they are now Muslim, Christian and Samaritan). But they are Hebrews by DNA. If you're going to highlight that the ethnonym "Palestinian" is an invention, then be my guest. Let us recognize that fact. Let us not hide it. But let us not say it is for political reasons that the call themselves "Palestinians". It is simply a term. Had the Romans renamed it Mars instead of Palestine, then today the "Palestinians"would be calling themselves Martians. And if they were currently calling themselves Martians, that factor would also be as irrelevant as the fact that the call themselves Palestinians. By DNA they are in fact Judeans (Jews) and Samarians (Shomronim, ie Samaritans) who converted first to Christianity and later largely to Islam. They went first from being Hebrew-speakers, to then becoming Aramaic-speakers during the period of Aramization, then during Arabization they became Arabic-speakers. In fact, Palestinians (be they Muslims, Christian or Samaritan) genetically cluster smack in the middle of the Jewish cluster, which themselves cluster as separate Jewish groups, but as a cluster together closer to one another than to say Lebanese or Jordanians or Iraqis etc. And the Palestinians are smack in the middle of the Jewish cluster. This indicates that not only are Palestinians of Hebraic DNA from a genetic standpoint, they could also be considered the ancestral population from where diaspora Jews stem. Each Jewish group is closer to Palestinians than each other. Of course, diaspora Jews kept the culture language and religion. The Palestinians lost it. Except for the few among them who remained Samaritans, and the even fewer who remained Jews. What is important is what they are, not what they call themselves, because the ethnonym itself is just all semantics. Kind of like "Jews". The Jews are named after the Tribe of Judah, but they include among their ancestors not just people from that tribe. More accurately the "Jews" are Israelites. Even more accurately they are Hebrews. More accurately Samaritans are Israelites, more accurately they are Hebrews. More accurately Palestinians are Israelites, more accurately they are Hebrews. Hebrew is the DNA, Israelite is the national identity, while Jew/Samaritan/Palestinian Muslim/Palestinian Christian is the religion they belong to. Together, however, they are all Hebrews. The Palestinians coming from Samaritans and Jews. While the Samaritans and Jews coming from Israelites. While the Israelites having been Hebrews. But thankfully, both Gingrinch and Adelson both expose their own agenda by highlighting one fact (that "Palestinian" is a modern invention) only to then obscure the whole truth (that they are an ancient people, members of the Hebrew people together with today's Jews) by suggesting the imposition upon them of another bluff, that of the term "Arab". As with "Palestinian", calling them or themselves "Arabs" is just a term.
Jordan, syria, egypt etc are all arab countries that should have welcomed all of the refugees in 1948 and recognized israel's right to exist.
I mean, in the world of 1948 why should any arab recognize israel? it was 95% (or more) settlers from all over the place. I always get this ridiculous argument.. dah, you had your chance in 1948 ... u missed it ... dah Please tell me why? Other than the fact that it was backed by all the imperial powers and had better guns and better trained soldiers, why should we have accepted it?
Arn't the Americans are also invented. Most of them however can't go for some generations to say from where their ancestors came from. In case of the "invented" people of Palestine, most of them can go back to the early Arab Islamic expansion after Mohammed's death and could know at least, how long they are in the land of Palestine! So what? Are their rights less documented than new colonialists coming from around the World in less than 100 years before?
I am Jewish and I love Israel. But to say that "Palestinians" don't exist is "Absurd" and "provocative."
Back to Europe where are ancestors were murdered by the millions? What about the Jews from Morroco, Yemen, Libya, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Saudi arabia etc. Jews not even allowed to visit those countries. So tell me where alll of us jews should go? Palestinians have Jordan. Let the palestinians rule themselves in jordan instead of the minority royal family. Jordan is their homeland and always has been. Before 1948 the land was a wasteland, The jews made the desert bloom and now everyone wants it.
The head of the Military Operations Department of the PLO Zuheir Muhsein, declared, “Only for political reasons do we carefully underline our Palestinian identity. …the existence of a separate Palestinian identity is there for tactical reasons.” The PLO charter states that Palestine is part of the Arab nation.
Islam didn't replace all these populations with Arabs.
THOSE WERE HIS EXACT WORDS HANK YOU
Oh yes, a man with billions of dollars but not a matching amoung of brain cells. In fact he doesn't seem to realize that Americans are an invented people as are the Israelis.
The more like characters out of a nightmare they seem. They are inventions of themselves. I don't believe that Sheldon Adelson is real at all. And as for Gingrich - the Wicked Witch of the West comes to mind.
Russian, Poles, Checks, Serbs, Bulgarians and a few more countries are all Slavonic race but different nationalities. So it is with Arabs. Still uneducated people think that if somebody is Arab he cannot be Palestinian.
when the "geniuses" sykes and picot drew the borders, what did they use are a guide? if they split up lands of arab people, why werent the borders more straight and more geometric? answer? because palestinians and syrians and lebanese and jordanians and iraqis, although they were arabs, they were different enough to split into seperate countries.
you can also be Polish-Israeli.
Arab = race. while palestinian = nationality. neither polish nor israeli is a race. your comparison is flawed
Hey,. Even if the Palestinian people are an invention, we must admit that only Goebbels could invent such a clever piece of propaganda. It is ingenious to invent one people (Palestinians) to destroy the indigenous people of Israel (the Jews). This lie the PLO created is even more brilliant than the Aryan race myth to motivate people to murder Jews. The PLO should be proud of their invention.
you are not an invention chaim---you are real---a terrorist land thief in an illegal settlement soon to be uninvented.
Don't you worry about that Chaim. Palestinians are proud to be palestinians. Now you managed to quote Goebbeld, Aryan and the PLO in the same sentence ! if that's not propaganda, i wonder what this is. Keep the hard word Chaim ! you're as efficient as Goebbels himself.
the irish sitting in so many lands of other peoples and labhras cannot see the wood for the trees . in 1924 there were more irish in england and scotland that in eire ! and in the usa there were 20 times more
Over to you veritas---if you are still awake.
"like so many posters you dont try the luxury of thinking and having knowledge before making an idiot of yourself!" veritas. Oh while you are researching --provide back up for your claim Irish Immigrants were illegal. Sharing is caring.
it is amazing how little people know about history and how little they care about the real truth. Israel was in existence thousands of years before 1948 as documented in the bible, as well as from archeological evidence. The Palestinians have no claim to the land and they have almost no history, to speak of. They were invented by the modern world.
Using the west these people are highly organized and through highly placed government positions are attempting to secure what they believe to be theirs for their grandkids. We are just goyim for their use. They dont feel its wrong to lie to us to accomplish their goals. This has been the largest organized swindle in modern times beginning with the first great lie "A land without a people for a people without a land".
From a presidential debate some weeks ago the moderator asked Paul if he thought differently or agreed with Gingrich weather or not the Pals were an invented people. Paul agreed that they were invented. Unfortunately the world bought into the idea that they should be recognized as a seperate people. It's about time for the truth and deconstruction: the Pals are Arabs no different that any other Arab group. The Pals as we know them were invented by Arafat. There is nothing remarkable about them either genetic, religous or cultural. The fact that so much of the world bought in has a whole lot to do with anti semitism, oil, immigration patterns and fear of terrorism than any moral or intelllectual capital.
I suggest to Gingrich and Adelson as well as to you to buy some books on anthropology an social psychology. There you will learn that the feeling of ethnicity and belonging is always a fact and a social construction at the dame time. This is true for every people. Hence it doesn't matter whether they are "invented".
The Arabs do not have more right to the land of Israel than the Jews
Joe: I am Jewish and love Israel. These people who say this are "magnoooooon." Nuts. It's just wishful thinking. It's like some Arabs and antisemites whoi say Jews are converts from KHAZAKSTAN.
the colonialist occupiers occupy 80 countries world wide so what actual argument are you presenting ?
Is success in business (apparently mainly casinos and hotels in his case) evidence of wisdom?
no need to learn distant history- arabs of palestian were never called 'palestinians' until the 70-s of the last century. no un resolution ever mentioned 'palestinians' until then. they have no language or cultural habits that make them different from other arabs in the region. and yes, it is irrelevant that they are invented as a part of the political game against israel. they are invented now and we have to deal with it. but we have to recognize that their invention does not offer them right to certain territorial claims. they can get what other parties of the region are willing to give them just to get them out of their sight.
There are several countries in which English is the primary language. There is the US, Canada, Australia, Great Britain, New Zealand letc. The peope who live in those countries all speak English but have different cultural habits, different holidays etc. etc. Your argument that all arabs are the same falls flat on its face and shows your absolute lack of knowledge of the Arab world.
Occupiers of the countries now known as the U.S., Canada, Australia, etc. all speak the language of the mother country (England) from whence they came just as the Arabs came from Arabia to occupy Israel.
but money doesn't make it true. Adelson isn't a historian, just like Gingrich he hasn't a clue.
Then can you tell me who the previous heads of state and what the borders were for these Palestinian people?
A state requires borders. A people does not require geographical borders.
Who has invented this Adelson?
Dear All, A very surprising belief by Mr Adelson that is contrary to international legitimacy resolutions. If his view were to be believed then the UN would not have stated that the Palestinians were a people. Therefore Mr Adelson is sadly mistaken. Furthermore, the ruling of the International Court of Justice in the Hague (supported by all EU members) disapproves Mr Adelson's view as does 150 UN Resolutions. The recognition of Palestine as of now by 130 nations (that include Russia, China, India, Brazil, Malaysia, Indonesia and recently Ireland) has been ignored. Mr Adelson also interestingly forgets the fact that UNESCO's Palestine bid was success and was recognized by Spain, Ireland and France. God bless.
just like the Israeli people
the israeli people were imported, overwhelmingly.the palestinians were the indigenous people of the land and no matter what they were called at any time in their history, they have prior claim to the land.
The Israelis came home to the land from which they had been expelled by the Romans in 70 A.D. There they found the trespassing Arabs and the improted field workers that the Babylonians and Assyrians had brought in to replace them from the earlier conquests. ISreal is still the land of the Jews, the children of Jacob (aka Israel).
The insults against another nation to justify destroying all their villages and to continue seizing their lands will not stand. You shall not pass!
like so many posters you dont try the luxury of thinking and having knowledge before making an idiot of yourself!
