Seven killed in series of terrorist attacks in southern Israel
At least 26 wounded after armed gunmen fired on bus traveling near Eilat, close to Egypt border; IDF trades fire with gunmen; mortars fired from Egyptian border; IDF kills several terrorists.

The first attack, at around 12 P.M., was a drive-by shooting targeting Egged bus 392 traveling from Be'er Sheva to Eilat, near the Netafim junction.

Shortly afterward, IDF forces rushed to the scene and were faced with several explosive devices that were detonated alongside an IDF vehicle.
At approximately 12:35, a mortar was fired from Egypt to Israel. No casualties were reported.
At 1:10 P.M., a terrorist cell fired an anti-tank missile at a private vehicle, wounding seven.
Minutes later, another cell fired an anti-tank missile at a private vehicle, killing six.
The IDF Spokesman reported that two to four terrorists were killed during the clashes.
According to reports, the terrorists in the car opened fire at the Egged bus, which carried a significant number of soldiers leaving their bases for the weekend.
In the aftermath of the first attack, Israeli security forces launched a search for the vehicle thought to have transported the gunmen, setting up barricades in the area. A firefight erupted once the IDF troops caught up with the vehicle, in which several of the armed men were killed.
Two IDF helicopters were called to the scene in order to evacuate those wounded to Yoseftal hospital in Eilat and to Soroka hospital in Be'er Sheva.

First, my condolences to the families of those killed in this attack. I don't know which group is behind this, but targeting civilians is never an acceptable means of warfare or resistance. It must've taken a serious lack of situational awareness on the part of the perpetrators of this attack to carry it out. The protests in Israel right now are close to encompassing a more broad message of social justice, one which includes Palestinians, both those with and those without Israeli citizenship. I can't think of a worse time to carry out an attack like this, one which Netanyahu and company will doubtless turn to their advantage in their goal of shutting down the social justice movement in Israel and making sure that it does not address the occupation, the refugees or the rights of Arabs in Israel. In addition to being deplorable for its deliberate targeting of civilians, then, this attack also proves to be completely contrary to the well-being of both Arabs and Jews in the region. Thus it is an utter mistake in the strategic sense in addition to being a reprehensible strike against those who can't defend themselves.

I am saddened to hear this news. and i'll pray for the victims and their relatives. This attack just goes to show how inhumane these people are. This was a well-coordinated attack on innocent civilians. I am disgusted.

I'm not sure what to say about killing civilians, this is shoking ! It looks like a tourism bus. I hope that we all wait till we find out what happened exactly and who actually was on the bus. The bus has been attached in Israel territory so it's a lake of internal security. Beside it was a gun fire not a rocket attack as I heard in different news, regarding comment 39, this is redicilous and will never happen, sinai might have limited soldiers as per Camp David agreement but this is not going to last long.
It was not acceptable to kill millions of Jews over 70 years ago but as the world leaders obviously see it, 6 or 7 a month for the past 50 years must be ok. This is a blatant terrorist attack on civilians within the legitimate borders of Israel, and yet some lunatics here are using it to attack Israel? Are these people for real? Are these people so blinded by hatred that they can't find it in themselves to condemn a crime such as this? I'm by no means a fan of Israeli policy and fully support the Palestinians in their attempts to get recognition of their right to a sovereign state, but this sort of atrocity targeting civilians should be condemned by any decent person, no matter who the victims are. Reading some of the posts here give me a degree of sympathy with those who claim any criticism of Israel is antisemitism, cause even to me that's what these posts look like.

Full condemnation of killing innocent people from both sides. Israel has 30 years od secured borders where they were given an outstanding chance to make decent peace with Palestinians. Instead they though Mubarak will be there for ever. They seized more lands from Palestinians, built more settlements, attacked Lebanon, West bank and Gaza, expelled thousands out of Jerusalem. It was probably those same Islamist militants that have been rampaging through the northern Sinai for the past few months, constantly attacking the pipeline that takes Egyptian gas to Israel. The Egyptian army chases them away from towns, and the pipeline gets repaired doublequick, but Egypt don't seem to want to fight them.

It's incredible what the defence minister Barak has to say: "The attacks prove that Egypt isn't able to control properly the Sinai peninsula". At least six dead on the road to Eilat, inside Israel, prove moreover that the defense minister hasn't taken his job seriously. It seems that most of the terrorists escaped to the Egyptian side. The narrow strips to Eilat should have been guarded day and night.
Now Denmark and Europe have to stop their support of Palæstinians in Gaza who supports Hamas. Citizens of Gaza must decide if they want to live in peace with Israel or they want to continue the conflict with israel - if they want peace, they have to accept Israel and stop attacking Israelis. Nobody can blame Israel for being unfriendly towards a neighbor that attacks busses and even schoolbusses on Israeli roads.

The destruction of all hope for peace and the credibility of the Palestinian Authorities Abbas has succeeded. The threat of peace is over. The future of settlements in Judea and Samaria is assured. The Terror taps are open and they will not be closed easily this time for there is no hope but terrorism left. The second infitada was a blast of Palestinian frustration which was followed by sincere and extensive attempts to produce peace and peace talks. That is over now after several years of determined and relentless efforts by Prime Minister Netanyahu to ensure that there would never be any Palestinian State; rather that Judea and Samaria would be systematically annexed into Israel by creeping settlement construction. This horror that he has unleashed will not hurt him, it will help him maintain the state of fear which he has been cultivating to remain in power. It will hurt hundreds of innocent israelis and thousands of innocent Palestinians. A few of the guilty on each side will pay as well. That can not atone for the innocent suffering and blood. Perhaps, it is just a chance, this was not a coordinated Hamas actions. If so then Hamas will have to hammer the guilty organizations. I do not expect Hamas to do that. Abbas is headed towards the failure of his last desperate attempt at peace. His enemies, and the mortal enemies of peace in both Palestine and Israel are in control now.
Of course, any party that is not interested in a full Palestinian state membership in the UN in coming September.

Israel belong on that piece of land and should be able to build on it as they please. The palistinians (or phillistines) don't belong in that land. That land was given to Israel long ago from Adonai himself. There is no colonialsim involved here. You need to know your history and get a clue.

The timing of this move just before the attempt to get recognition for a Palestinian state at the UN is too obvious to ignore. Anything that advances a two state solution limits the appeal of a militant Islamist party and this indicates they know it. That Hamas would compromise easier border conditions with Egypt in this way shows that the welfare of the Gaza civilians is also not their prime concern.
Killing enemy soldiers during a battle is not terror. Attacking a bus which happens to have soldiers in it, is terror. Besides, the terrorist attacked at least one private car and the incidents have not finished yet. People who justify these acts have a twisted mind and their emotions speak for them. What is crazier then this attack is the fact that people read about terrorist shooting a bus full of people and then fail to realize or to just admit that it was wrong! Yes, it's inexcusable that at least five people have been killed. Sure, people have a right to be indignant. But where was the outrage in the past few weeks over the deaths of innocent Palestinians from Israeli air attacks in Gaza? Back when racism was institutionalised here in Australia they had a rule in the newspapers: "One dead Australian equals ten dead Englishmen equals a thousand dead Chinamen". Seems the same thing occurs in Israel. Let me reiterate that I condemn this attack just as much as the next person - it's going to do nothing for the Palestinian cause. The whole world bar none derided and castigated and villified Israel over killing civilians in Gaza, so I am not sure where you have been. However, it seems to me to be somewhat hypocritical to equate terrorism from Israel's side and that of the Palestinians. If I remember correctly, Isreal bombed Gaza from the air in response to some 7 or 8 000 rockets being fired on Isreal from Gaza first, and the Isreali bombing was in response to years of blatant, open, and deadly aggression. How is today's act of terrorism even on the same page? I think you should re-think your comparisons, they just don't seem to be balanced!
Do you not see a difference at all? Israel defends herself with an air attack in Gaza....there were casualties. In this situation, it is an outright terrorist attack. What you are saying is on the same lines as comparing the 9/11 attacks in the USA to civilian casualties during an operation in Iraq by the United States military. It just doesn't make sense. one could call them Egyptian, but I'm thinking it was the Al Qaeda-linked Bedouin group in the Sinai. There is an Egyptian offensive going on against them right now and they probably think it is motivated by Israel and the US...thus, they crossed borders and attacked where they could. Also, it's Ramadan, so they did probably try to target soldiers on the bus. Just my two cents.

There is a Youtube video showing a family van at Yoseftal Hospital. They were attacked some 15 miles from Eilat in Israel, according to the interview. The van has multiple bullet holes and windows shot out. They probably drove straight to the hospital after being shot up. My heart prays for their survival and well being. They were innocent highway travelers who did NOT deserve to be targeted. No difference between what happened to them and the planes that flew into the World Trade Center's Towers. I think it highly necessary to point out in light of such an insensitive comment that the first attack was on an Egged bus, which is first and foremost a civilian bus. That the bus was transporting soldiers is purely coincidental, and as any person who is even remotely familiar with the Israeli bus system, most intercity buses carry at least one if not more Israeli soldiers at any time- but the fact is that this was a civilian bus and to say that it was shot at targeting the soldiers aboard does a great injustice to all those who were injured or killed, whether they were military or civilian.

It does not matter if soldiers were on the bus. The bus was clearly in Israeli territory. The assaault came from Egyptian territory. There is a long standing peace agreement with Egypt. There is no occupied Egyptian territory. Call it terrorism or call it just plain murder . Egypt has the responsibility to find these people and to make sure their borders are safe for Israelis to live close by.
