Reuters under fire for removing weapons, blood from images of Gaza flotilla
News agency rejects charges of biased coverage, says it reverted to use of 'original set' of images once cropping discovered.
By Natasha Mozgovaya Tags: Gaza flotilla IDF Hamas GazaThe Reuters news agency has been accused of removing images of activists wielding weapons and bloodied and wounded Israeli naval commandos from photographs taken on board a ship headed for Gaza during deadly clashes last week.
Nine people were killed and dozens others, among them Israel Defense Forces soldiers, were hurt when the clashes erupted as IDF troops tried to board the Mavi Marmara ship in order to prevent it reaching its destination in Gaza.
The ship was one of six vessels that made up the "Freedom Flotilla," a convoy carrying aid that set out from Turkey in an attempt to break Israel's blockade on the Gaza Strip. Five of the boats in the convoy were boarded by IDF troops without incident, while passengers on the sixth fought the troops as they came onboard. All six boats were towed by the Israel Navy to the Israeli port city of Ashdod.
Reuters on Monday rejected accusations of biased coverage, adding that it had reverted to the use of "the original set" of images, once the organization realized that the photographs it had published had been cropped.
A Reuters spokesman told Haaretz: "Reuters is committed to an accurate and impartial reporting. All images that pass over our wire follow a strict editorial evaluation and selection process.
"The images in question were made available in Istanbul in following normal editorial practice were prepared for dissemination which included cropping at the edges. When we realized that the dagger was inadvertently cropped from the images Reuters immediately moved to the original set as well.”
This is not the first time that Reuters has been criticized for images that appear to be biased against Israel. During the Second Lebanon War in 2006, the news agency admitted that one of its pictures of destruction caused by Israel's bombing of Beirut had been altered with a computer graphics program.
Political commentator Tom Gross told Haaretz that "this isn’t the first time Reuters had been caught altering photos to make them less sympathetic to Israel. They did so, for example, in the 2006 Lebanon war."
"Everyone makes mistakes, including journalists, but every time Reuters says it makes a mistake, it does so to Israel’s detriment, and this looks suspiciously like a deliberate pattern."
"The father of Julius Reuter – the German Jew who founded Reuters – was a rabbi. He must be turning in his grave at how Reuters is helping to stir up delegtimization against the Jewish state."

Well, Israeli soldiers pirate the ships, open fire at nonviolent activists, killed and wound dozens, and failed to find a single weapon on the ships. wounded soldiers? complain to your leadership that sent you to kill peace and human rights activists
A Reuters spokesperson said "Reuters is committed to an accurate and impartial reporting....as long as Israel is demonized and we manipulate the facts to make the aggressors (Palestinians & 'Peace" Activists supporting them) look like victims. All images that pass over our wire follow a strict editorial evaluation and selection process...to show that we are totally biased against Israel and will leave out facts (like a Palestinian 'Peace' activist standing over a bleeding IDF soldier blatantly holding a knife) because then we can spin this story to benefit the Palestinians and our beloved civilian killing, rocket lobbing, foreign aid stealing Hamas Reuters doesn't report news, simply propaganda.
Civilians take down soldiers attacking their ship, but they can refrain themselves from killing them... But the soldiers can't refrain themselves from killing civilians in defense... Shouldn't it be the opposite? Taking a beating makes an Israeli soldier to shoot people in the head? And point blank at that... They were highly trained commandos and they could easily shoot them in their feet, right?
The waye he is holding the knife is not agresive, and it looks military.
Reuters decides NOT to show those pictures that put IDF in a bad light (hiding activists' weapons and soldiers' wounds). So how is that anti Israel bias?
The propaganda video "Gaza flotilla- the Love Boat" (see YouTube), contains an uncropped version of the famous photograph of the man with the knife (which has often been shown on the Haaretz website). On the uncropped photo it can be seen that he is sitting on the floor. He is clearly not attacking anyone, but engaged in a performance for an audience, surrounded by relaxed photographers. As Ali Abunimah remarks: “Who keeps the original photo? The IDF Spokesperson's office. If the IDF distributed a cropped version of the photo and only they have the original, does that suggest that they also put out this crude propaganda video?... If the IDF didn't crop the photo itself, are Israeli media cropping it in a deliberately manipulative manner to conceal the context and boost the claim that the man himself or others were lunging at Israeli soldiers with knives?”
Crock of hooi. You don't inadvertently crop out an image by removing a knife from the image. YOU INTENTIONALLY DO THAT. Seems like Reuters can't be honest about anything.
When we realized that the dagger was inadvertently cropped from the images ...can things like that happen inadvertently...
there is no such thing as " cropping the edges" unless intention is to remove 'disturbing" objects. Reuters should check its photo editors and itself
At least Reuters mistakes are consistently one way. This makes the job of fixing the root problems much easier. Imagine that as a news organization they had totally random information - much harder to fix. But knowing Reuters I think they will somehow keep finding it hard to fix. I guess saying you are unbiased is so much easier then ensuring it.
The IDF does so much doctoring of all information released, that it is the height of hypocrisy to accuse Reuters of doing the same. Who do you think they learned it from?
14 million Jews vs 1.2 billion Muslims and another billion anti-semites and other Israel haters, it is vitally important that the Jewish people unite before all hell breaks loose.
Just like I'm sure the Turkish thugs were "peace activists" and not paid mercenaries. I mean, the average peace activist walks around with 10,000 in Euros in their pocket, right?
The one thing that is in short supply these days and is desperately needed is true information. Journalists should present all aspects of a story, not just the ones that fit their world view. I support at least what the flotilla aimed to do (not their methods), but the violence that some of the activists perpetrated needs to be known just as much as the violence of the blockade itself.
Nothing new!! cropped and altered pictures? for how much did you sold your honesty dignity and credibility REUTERS?
Typical reaction when caught. The anti Israel anti semetic reuters caught with its outright lies, Falsehoods, untruths, twisted words, lies and deciet the trademark of reuters
Finally, Reuters is exposed for their bias in reporting. Now, let's review the ownership of Reuters, AP, & AFP, and who are the reporters. The reporters for all the news services used to sign their names to their reports. Why no longer? Almost all of them had muslim names. Any wonder why the biased reporting. These are not news services. They are well-oiled propaganda machines.
So what about all the cameras and memory cards that were seized from the boats.?.Is the release by Israel of selected images from the seized cameras not biased as well ?
and the other pictures and videos confiscated by the IDF? Funny how only censorship against Israel is of any concern to you. And don't forget the video where it was proved that the IDF had dubbed the phony "go back to" clip onto their own previously released copy of the same video WITHOUT the dubbed in clip.
there is already an explanation up on the reuters site. they were emailed the cropped pics, then someone pointed out the full pics and they swapped them. why does it even care? the dudes in the pics had bloody faces as it was, who gives a sh&t about that same blood that had dripped on the floor? this current quest to blame everyone on earth for israel's own issues besides israel is so strange.
Sure Reuters, make up excuses.
The Free Gaza people have repeatedly said that any knives used were likely taken from the kitchen. But the knife in these photos is clearly not a kitchen knife. So where did it come from?
When images are altered or "inadvertently cropped" always for only one side there are no errors anymore
It was hard to believe what I read that Reuters cropped a picture not to show a knife in the hand of a Turk on the ship that was "peaceful". Any wonder why Jews are paranoid? There is lots of Jew hatred out there.
Was the same discretion applied by the IDF? If the cropped picture is worth a thousand words than an unedited one must be worth two thousand.
How odd that this seems to have required to diferent "croppings" to get the dagger out of both images! They cropped once from left to right and then in a different image from top to bottom! That seems an odd thing to do! And how odd that in both cases it managed to delete the same dagger!
I do suspect these knives are standard issue IDF knives, seeing that these were not featured in the weapons collection. If not, in a photo it looks like it is being used to cut off a strap, but not easy to tell. However, this "newspiece" has a subtext that's easy to use for creating moral narratives. And that's sad when there's clear proofs in these pictures that soldiers were given aid, dearmed, and weapons not used against them even when they had the chance. But IDF didn't release these photos exactly because they wouldn't make it possible to raise such a narrative. How's that for news?
Reuters actions in cropping out the dagger and the injured IDF soldiers support the charges that many critics of Reuters have leveled at this 'news' agency - that their objectivity and impartiality are plainly suspect. Reuters new motto: "Lector Caveo!" ("Reader Beware!") p.
The Foreign Press Association complained of the use of Flortilla videos used by Israel now Israel has proof that agencies like reuters have always been biased. Israel should quicly file a complaint with the FPA and others agencies against Reuter for using photos that have an agenda. Reuter Israel showed be censored and investigated.
Well, all he does is holding the soldier's knife after they disarmed him - just look how he holds it, along with gear and straps. The IDF spokesman spinned a really bad story as the photos show now.
The non-folding knife has a black serrated blade. This is very typical of tactical diving knives, which might be expected to be commonly used by (navy) commandos. Also the way of holding the knife with fingers hints that it is only kept by the holder, not to be used offensively. So, what's so worth of news in cropping away a knife of the israeli commando?
So they cropped the dagger! LOL. I won't believe anything they publish now. Their credibility is **zero**. Cipher! kaput! Good article, Ha'aretz!
Its not only Reuters ...What about BBC ,CNN,Sydney Morning Herald ,the world media are playing a very dangerous game at the expense of the Jewish people and the world will pay a heavy price ,These reporters I am afraid have not learned from history .All they are doing is creating antisemitism .Haaretz you also fall into this category as the antisemitec media seem to QUOTE you when it suites them
It's not the first time that those antisemites show their real collours,,,There were many other occasions that they skewed news against the Jewish People and against Israel
And the man in the orange life vest is a doctor administering to the wounded soldier.
The original photo (with the knife) even more confirms they could have easily killed the soldier IF THEY WANTED. How about some photos now about the killings by IDF. Still don't get the big picture?
that's the big picture for you...
I'm surprised that the American media published all of the stolen and possibly corrupted news feed that Israel edited and hijacked from the onboard journalists and surveillance systems without a disclaimer stating its uncertain veracity and origins. No wonder Israel doesn't want an independent investigation, since it is holding all of the possibly incriminating evidence. Unbelievable Israeli dishonesty,,,,and nobody in the media seems to care, or, is afraid to state the obvious..
this is one perfect example of reason for loss of faith in media. manipulation by media is intolerable criminal offense as wrong or 'cropped' information hiding the whole truth can lead to wrong opinion formation in public mind. there should be adequate measures to punish those guilty.
Shame on You, Reuters.
Remember Beyruth with big big smoke, remember Gaza without electricity and gazans with their candles... but it was in broad daylight. Don't worry Reuters is impartial
The truth will never find its way to your TV
I find it interesting that Reuters can get slammed for cropping a pic and Israel with it's military censorship and full time propaganda department has the audacity to complain. You can't have it both ways.
this as extremely scandalous a major news agency for the "free world" acting more like a soviet communist agency right out of 1984.some heads better roll .but no whitewash or maybe reuters should go out of business they seem worthless now
Why should Reuters continue to publish IDF propaganda photos when the IDF refuse to hand over any of the pictures taken by the journalists on the ships? Who is really manipulating the media here?
If they want to save their name they have to fire whomever cropped it.
Reuters has always been ANTI ISRAEL PROPAGANDA
You tampered with the pictures of Israeli soldiers being brutally beaten up by the "peaceful" passengers on the Gaza flotilla. Why? Is Reuters anti-Israel? Do you know you are endangering the lives of 7 million Israelis? Don't you have any social responsibility? Have you made a formal apology? Have you PUBLICLY notified Turkey, Ecuador, Nicaragua, South Africa that you lied about Israel??? I will never trust your reporting again! I will let all of my firends and their friends know-- what you purposely did to inflame the Middle East for your own profits! Shame on You!!!!!
Disgusting
I'm glad I'm not the only person to notice Reuters bias of late. The rise in anti-sematism lately has been very noticeable. Prior to the flotilla incident, I thought Reuters was a more balanced read, but I have been offended by their blatant bias as of late. It's horrifying.
It's a good thing there is Fox news to report the truth!
Why did Israel confiscate Photo material of the killed civilians and the attacking soldiers?
See, along with the slingshots, marbles, metal pipes, and 20,000 pounds of humanitarian aid, they also had knifes! Clearly the IDF was justified in their use of deadly force. How else could they have defended themselves after they illegally stormed the flotilla of hate?
It's ok, the activists were peaceful, soldier slipped on banana peel, and fall on the knife that activist was pealing the banana with,.
Israel has heard them all before ...
and the double standards speak volumes when Turkey is bombing Kurds in Nothern Iraq today. Isnt Iraq a sovereign nation?? Isnt Turkey's action an act of WAR?!?!??!
We say world isn't flat you say yes it is yes it is carry on man
the problem for Israel is that the images show that the Israeli narritive although it plays well with the Israelis is a lie. The fact is they could have killed the IDF at anytime. They didn't still no hiding the fact that 8 Turkish citrizens and 1 American sitizen died
How can anyone say that the guys on the ship wanted to kill the soldiers is beyond me :(... look at pictures 2 & 4, all they had to do is plunge the knife into the wounded soldier's throat... yet no Israeli was killed that day. Sure they resisted with violence and they shouldn't have (the IDF shouldn't have boarded to ship either, but I don't want to know who started it, ok) but still it was no reason to shot 9 of them in the head point blank... I'm an Israeli-American and I'm usually 100% behind my country but come on, it really doesn't look good at all this time. At the very least the soldiers grossly overreacted and panicked (which "elite" commandos shouldn't do...)... and the head of the navy should have resigned the very day of the incident !!!!
Watch the clip in which they stab the soldier, yeah they rly do.
Nothing new here. Wasn't Reuters the agency that doctored pictures of Beirut during last war against Israel? Very reliable agency... Looks like they are on the payroll from the Arabs.
