Report: Obama promised Abbas a Palestinian state within two years

Al-Hayat: Egyptian official says Israel refused U.S. bid to remove troops from PA-controlled West Bank.

By Haaretz Service Tags: Barack Obama Mahmoud Abbas Israel news Middle East peace

U.S. President Barack Obama told Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas that he was committed to seeing the creation of a sovereign Palestinian state within two years, an Egyptian official told the Arabic-language daily Al-Hayat on Thursday.

Obama promised Abbas that the United States would make great effort to help see that Palestinian goal achieved, the official told the London-based newspaper.

The official also told Al-Hayat that Israel had rejected special U.S. envoy George Mitchell's proposal to withdraw Israel Defense Forces troops from Palestinian-occupied sections of the West Bank, as it did on the eve of the Second Intifada in 2000.

According to the report, Israel told Mitchell that it could not guarantee such a move before beginning direct peace negotiations with the Palestinian Authority.

In place of withdrawing troops, the official told Al-Hayat, Israel offered other goodwill gestures, such as removing checkpoints and releasing certain Palestinian prisoners.

Last week, Abbas urged the Obama administration to impose a solution to the Middle East conflict that would give his people an independent state, and rejected the idea of creating a state within temporary borders.

"Mr. President [Barack Obama] and members of the American administration, since you believe in this [an independent Palestinian state], it is your duty to take steps toward a solution and to impose this solution," Abbas said in a speech to his Fatah party.

Abbas' appeal to Obama came amid widespread media reports that the U.S. president was considering floating a proposal that would set the contours of a final peace deal.

First and foremost, no two-state solution was ever Covenanted and the day Israel agrees and takes an outside deal with pseudo promises of peace and security, be it from Obama and US, or the NWO or even from the Vatican, this much I will assure you. Whoever tries to circumvent Yahwehs' Covenants to Ishmael and Isaac and of Jerusalem & Israel, shall feel at the moment of the abomination in the House of Prayers, what the division of Jerusalem will look like and all the unfaithful to the One True God will not find shelter fleeing from His Wrath. This is the promise, you've been warned repeatedly, Jew and Gentile. Focus on One State, both family descendants restored to the greater good of Israel and the "One True God" with all of the Heavenly Glory descending on Jerusalem as the Beacon for the Nations of the world to be shielded from war, Forever More...Shalom!

It's a gas how the Scottish are so anti-Israel. This is because they could not make it on their own. Just have a jealous rage that they cannot scratch. When they see Israel getting in dependance and fight unsurmountable odds against British and Arab enemy, they just cannot stand themselves. The Pals can go anywhere and be Moslems. Just like the Scots. They can go to England and feel at home. Jew only have little Israel. Scottie why don't you take care of your own in dependance, then give us a call.

Did anyone actually read Obama's words...to speak of a committment to a 2-state solution IS NOT A PROMISE OF ANYTHING. Most of the nations on Planet Earth are committed to a 2-state solution...do they too make promises? You want to blame one man for 62 years of Israeli AND PA ineptitude despite the fact that if Israel and the PA truly wanted peace...it would have happened long ago. Take a glance in the mirror...the blame rests there. Obama's not your problem...you are.

    • 19:16

Of course, even if the two-state solution can be achieved, Israel will necessarily retain huge settlement blocs that its immoral "facts-on-the-ground" policy over the years have allowed it to permanently steal. This will remain a stain on Israel's international reputation forever. This stain could be ameliorated somewhat if truly comparable land could be swapped for the stolen land, but it is doubtful Israel could ever bring itself to a fair arrangement.

This is like Obama's health reform. The US administration's policies are totally opaque. No Pal, no Arab, nor any American knows what are the Administration's plans for the ME. So everybody makes weird guesses and everybody makes moralistic statements, that lead to nowhere. Jerusalem is and stays the heart of Israel. The Golan was reconqered from Syria twice in 1967 and in 1973 in wars started by Syria and meant to destroy Israel. A little punishment Of Syria is due.giving Golan to Syria is an irresposible act to the people that live there.

Anyone who talks about "Palestinian state" is in a fool's dream--as such state is DIVINELY PROSCRIBED (see Obadiah, which specifically addresses their ancestors, Edomites)! It is appalling that many Americans who call themselves Christians (even some who call themselves "born-again") are ignorant of this fact--when their knowledge should be well beyond that of THIS convert from idolatry. Even more appalling is that some (such as Jeremiah Wright, and his evil disciple in WH) term themselves Christian, but WILFULLY contradict God's word!

As far as I am concerned he is a temporary, 1 term-figure, passing through the history with a very limited knowledge of ME and thorough brain-washing from Rev. Wright... My main concern for him not to completely ruin US economy by his failing socialist ideas of spreading wealth around.. Good riddence...

    • 16:49

San Francisco known as the "Sanctuary City" and seat of the liberal bloc within the USA should be more than willing to receive illegal immigrants in Arizona who will be displaced by the new Arizona Law which enforces US Federal Law that crossing into the USA without going thru the proper procedures as federal law requires. Therefore, since Obama is committed to create a Palestinian State on another country land (Israel), maybe he should meet such a committment by not infringing on Israels sovereignty, but instead provide a Palestinian State within his juristiction the USA and moreover in the state of the biggest Palestinian supporters...California and its Liberal Left Wing Capital of San VFrancisco. Its time San Francisco proved they are indeed the Sanctuary city, especially since no Arab country wants palestinians.

The deal that enabled resumption of peace talks
    • Logios
    • 29.04.10
    • 16:42

"Last week, a letter from President Barack Obama was conveyed to Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president. In it, I understand, Obama spoke of his very strong commitment ? unprecedented commitment ? to a two-state peace and said that if Israel seriously undermines trust between the two parties, the United States will not stand in the way of a United Nations resolution condemning that." - Roger Cohen (New York Times) This was probably the deal that enabled the resumption of peace talks. Netanyahu unofficially promised not to build in East Jerusalem, and the US made the promise serious by promising not to exercise its veto and allow condemnation of Israel by the Security Council if Netanyahu breaks his promise. A fair deal, but I don`t believe that Netanyahu is a sincere peace partner. The talks will not lead to conclusions because the ideologues of Likud and the settlers are not willing to give up on Greater Israel and Netanyahu is not committed enough to break with them.

Fer' cryin' out loud! Does Israel keep ANY promises? Does it stand by ANY of its agreements? Any at all? Because it seems to me that an Israeli signature on ANY agreement is worth exactly Jack Shit, and that raises the question of why ANYONE would be bothered to negotiate ANYTHING with Israel....

Try the following: We the Palestinians . 1) accept that Israel needs to serve at the homeland of the Jews and Judaism 2) accept that Jews have an historic connection to this land. 3) understand the Temple Mount is as important to Jews as it is to anyone else. 4) want special access to Aksa Mosque but acknowledge that the mosques have been built on the ruins of the Jewish Temples. 5) acknowledge that claims of sovereignty on the Temple Mount are unrealistic and will not lead to peace between the two nations. 6) without damaging our own claims of importance of the Temple Mount to Islam, are willing to accept the vertical/horizon idea 7) acknowledge that Israel needs physical security buffers This is not going to happen, but this is what Obama needs to demand from the Arabs.
