Report: IDF prepares to demolish yeshiva at West Bank settlement Yitzhar

Military sources say army prosecutors have turned down an appeal against plans to raze the yeshiva.

The military is preparing to demolish a Jewish seminary building at the West Bank settlement of Yitzhar after residents lost an appeal against its destruction, Army Radio reported Wednesday.

Military sources said that army prosecutors had turned down an appeal against plans to raze the yeshiva, which the government has ruled illegal, in response to attacks by Yitzhar settlers on neighboring Palestinians and the extremist language used by the yeshiva's rabbi, Itzik Shapira.

The Civil Administration, the Israeli body that governs Israeli-controlled territory in the West Bank, in May 2010 issued an order to renew proceedings to demolish the hilltop settlement's Od Yosef Hai yeshiva.

The order was one in a series of army reposnses after settlers clashed with security forces on Israeli Independence Day in April. Three Israel Defense Forces soldiers were wounded by stones thrown near the settlement.

A slew of violent incidents in recent months has marked Yitzhar out as the center of the extremist trend in the settler movement. Earlier in July police arrested a Yitzhar man suspected of fatally shooting a Palestinian teenager who had thrown stones at his car.

In April, residents marched through a neighboring Palestinian village and attacked a home in response to the arrest of 11 Yitzhar settlers, while in January the Shin Bet security service questioned several residents, including Shapira, over a December arson attack on a Palestinian mosque.

If Israel could demolish the homes of 250 bedouin in the Negev yesterday; why not demolish this hot bed of ultra orthodox extremism. No double standards.

Another decision to boost confidence in the goverment and its leaders but you have to hand it to them it would be hard to even imagine such a macarbre way of dealling with idealogical differences the state against the indivduals is a sad and undignified way of dealling with the issue of his book

Sorry people but if we start demolishing schools because we disagree with legitimate political views that we may not agree with, where do we stop? I happen not to agree with some of the rantings by the professors at Ben – Gurion University, or the faculty of some over left wing school, does that mean we should knock it down?

So, because of political ideas we can destroy an entire institute of studies? So someone because he lives in a place woulod had to be in prison?? And they think only in themselves being one of the most active sectors of Israeli society, serving the army, in the yshuvim inside ther is mostly no security problem... For some fanatics we punish all? I can't imagine the Israeli governement following the steps of our enemis : the Inquisition, Cosacs and Hitler also destroyed Yeshivots..

Israel has a history of doing the right thing . Sinai, Gaza and other illegal settlements have been eliminated. contrast this with the Palestinian refusal to negotiate in good faith with out pre-conditions, but for the Palestinians this is business as usual. they are still hoping Israel will disappear.

Let me get this straight, the “establishment” doesn’t like something’s the head of the Yeshiva said, and they don’t like some of the things some of the people of that city have done, so they tear down the local Yeshiva?! And some of you people think this is the rule of law?! Not in a normal democracy it isn’t. When are they going to tear down Ben-Gurion university?

    • 14:53

... just let me know when you did it. The Supreme Court determined years ago that some settlements are built on private Arab land and must be evacuated and the land restored to the owners. So what happened? Nothing. The army fears the response of the settlers. Yitzhar is a Kahanist settlement, the worst of the lot. The destruction of a Yeshiva building is especially prone for demagoguery and public hysteria. Will the IDF dare carry out the court order? The record indicates otherwise. So let us not waste out time on this bit of news.

since when democratic country regulates internal problems by using military against its own citizens? Oh, i know - it used to be soviet russia, china still practicing, n. korea, etc. Also so what if Yitzhar is a Kahanist are they no longer people? And if you believe that settlement has rightful owner why no one claimed it from arabs so far, and most importantly - why destroy yeshiva only if whole settlement is illegal? May be its a good time to start thinking logically and try to avoid leftish argumentation

20 Years Ago, Most Acts of Terrorism were by the Pals
    • Doug
    • 28.07.10
    • 13:55

The last 5 years, almost all acts of terrorism have been by the Israeli's. Settlers shooting Pals, vandalizing their mosques and homes, burning and cutting their fruit trees, stealing their land . IDF shooting Pal and non-Pal demonstrators, shooting blindfolded, handcuffed Pals in the foot, shooting women carrying white flags, using Pal civilians as human shields, and declaring closed military zones to steal Pal land.. But still the Israeli goverment whines about Pal terrorism without acknowledging that the real problem is Israeli terrorism. But the world is finally catching on to what is really going on.

Shalom, Forget about the suspected Jewish extremists as the motivation to demolish a yeshiva in Israel. Couldn't this also be the face of modern Israeli peace-making? if Israel hurts itself, (i.e. painful concessions) somehow the Palestinians and their supporters will realize the truth; that Israeli's wants peace. Trouble is... it hasn't worked. Peace is truly one constructive decision away. The decision of the Palestinians to join us in peace and live a better life without bloodshed and hostility. May this day come soon but not before they are ready and certainly not at the cost of losing our minds.

but that is what the government wants. There are thousands of illegal Arab building throughout Israel in the North in the Negev in East Jerusalem. Defense minister Barak wants to prove something so he is tearing it down. In the end it may be another atzmona. Which was a failure in the past government.

There is going to be violence and war if this is carried out. This is not a threat, this is an observation. The IDF and the law establishment are crossing very big red lines in my opinion, and they must remember, they are not dealing with Haredim. If they destroy that yeshiva by applying the rule of the law 'selectively' against them, this could very well spiral out of control.

In most of the national-religious world there is a big influence of the rabbis and in this moment no-one would look even posible the loss of jewish life as a solujtion to something or a posiblility. But in fact it could be some case of isoliated "problems" of some deseperated people after loosing their house, something than it would be very marginal.. See the Gaza expulsion of some thousands people loosing their houses , and there was not a collective "violent" oposition, just a pacific one. We are jews it could not be a Fatah-Hamas here

It's beyond difficult to comprehend that gangsters such as the Yitzhar settlers & Rabbi Itzik Shapira even have a right to appeal their illegal occupation of land that does not belong to them or Israel. Who cares about a yeshiva? Rabbi Shapira plus each & every Israeli illegally beyond the 1947 border, including Avigdor Lieberman, belongs in prison.

Finally Israel uses the rule of law against her whole population. A small, but important step against the greatest danger to the existence of Israel as a democratic jewish state: the ultraorthodox religious.
