Report: Erdogan considering visiting Gaza to 'break blockade'

Turkish PM may visit Gaza, ask Turkish Navy to accompany another aid flotilla, according to Lebanese newspaper; Turkish military opposes cutting security ties with Israel.

By Haaretz Service Tags: Israel news Turkey. Gaza flotilla

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is weighing the possibility of traveling to the Gaza Strip in order to "break the Israeli blockade," the Lebanese newspaper al-Mustaqbal reported on Saturday, according to Army Radio.

Erdogan reportedly raised the idea in conversations with close associates and even informed the United States of his intention to ask the Turkish Navy to accompany another aid flotilla to Gaza. The Americans asked Erdogan to delay his plans, in light of tensions on the region, the Lebanese report said.

According to the report, Erdogan is under intense political pressure to cancel security agreements with Israel. The Turkish military establishment, however, strongly opposes the idea of cutting security ties with Israel.

Erdogan has fiercely criticized Israeli for Monday's raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla, in which nine people, all Turkish citizens, were killed.

The fact that they, and the world, base themselves on lies, THAT THEY KNOW ARE LIES,, in order to destroy Israel is indeed frightening. This may go down in history as the victory of lies over truth. Suddenly, morality will cease to exist. I see no way out of this terrible situation....

Isn't Turkey the occupying power in northern Cyprus? And isn't that just one of the reasons why many member states don't want Turkey to join the EU? And isn't another reason Turkey's decidedly less than humanitarian human rights record? Despite his other failings, Sarkozy seems to have a very sensible perspective on the Turks.

To send a military flotilla to break a blockade against a closed military zone of another nation is under any legal definition an act of war. Gaza is not an independent state and is not recognized as possessing sovereignty. Under international law, Gaza and its coastal waters fall under the military jurisdiction of Israel. Erdogan is a cheap political trickster who is way out of his league. I am sure that the Turkish military has no intention of pulling off this stunt, knowing full well that a military altercation with Israel - and perhaps the United States - will not go well for them.

And is Hamas really helping its own people? I think Hamas does not care about the people and their needs. Just like Erdogan, Hamas wants war! Be careful Erdogan! You are tricked or you really want this to happen!

I think it is very understandable the conflict between Turkey and Israel. The turkish flag was floating in the flotilla when Israel soldiers board the ship. Mr. Tayyip Erdogan personally got offendedesspecially that nine turkish passhebgers were killed. Israel has to measure very cerefeully its next step before taking any destructive action juat to keep the good relations. Do not forget that Turkey opened its doors 500 years ago to the jews who fled the inquisition in Spain.Keep the good relations and do not get swept away in today mishap between the 2 countries. Israel needs Turkey. Max levy

A small extract from amnesty international 2009 report not even talking about 2010: "Human rights suffered in the context of political instability and military clashes. Reports of torture and other ill-treatment increased, while dissenting views were met with prosecution and intimidation. The right to freedom of peaceful assembly was denied, and law enforcement officials used excessive force to disperse demonstrations. Anti-terrorism legislation was also used to restrict freedom of expression. Unfair trials persisted especially for those prosecuted under anti-terrorism legislation, while barriers remained in bringing law enforcement officials to justice for human rights abuses. No progress was made in allowing the right to conscientious objection to military service. Forcible returns of refugees increased. Discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity persisted. Implementation of laws aimed at preventing violence against women and girls remained slow". Lets not even talk about Armenia and Cyprus. Interesting behaviour from our new human rights beacon.

All is getting messed up now. Indeed the Israelis made the biggest mistake by killing activists. In international waters is a breach of international law. Indeed Israel should give the Gaza people a normal life by opening up the borders. But Erdogan is just provoking as Hamas is doing. This is contraproductive and dangerous. I am sure that most Turks do not support this idea. Erdogan should also know that although 9 people got killed, Hamas refused the goods from the ships! Think about this! Hamas blocked the aid!

The US is backong out of Iraq and eventually Afghanistan. The best wa yto control the region is its ally Turkey, who can command support and respect of all muslims, not Israel who only alienates them and has proven a one-sided and worthless ally, having only caused spread of anti-Americanism over the decades. If Israel is smart it will not resist this movement because it will result in a more moderate influence over the Islamic world than the Iranian brand it competes against. Erdogan is a visionary.

in the middle east, there comes a point when leaders feel that have to outshine one another. ahmedinajad has been getting all the attention as the supposed leader of the pro hamas regime in gaza. estrogen, with his b-male and a-female complex has to show his cup size too. what better way to get strarted on his own nuclear plan which, he now knows and most of us now know, is not to defend from israel on the high waters but rather to protect him from ahmedinajad, whose obsiquious subject he will be when the iran conducts its first nuke test.

While Erdogan may be winning the "arab" street, the problems in Turkey are many: 20% unemployment, poverty, lack of human rights. These problems exist in every muslim country, which may find it challenging to meet the needs of the poor. That is how the radical islamists have come to power, by filling in the gap with their charities for the poor, and by having candidates run for the govt. positions. However, those countries run by the Islamists have the poorest record for human rights, tolerance and equality. They are somewhat like the communist countries. Cuba, for example, where things were made better for the poor, but the economy stagnates and there are no human rights. Democracy, meaning tolerance and human rights for all, seems to be an idea that is foreign to them and which they can never incorporate, because of their authoritarian and patriarchal nature. The economy will be the number one problem I think. Osama bin Laden was glad to crush the USA economy, knowing that it would crush human rights (his being no lover of them). We have to show him that human rights are important to us; and we will have to help the world economy recover.
