Poll: Most Americans would back Israel attack on Iran

Do the most of the Americans know the location of Iran and Israel on earth?

I think the poll was taken at a time when the US and Iran were arguing over the defection/nondefection of an Iranian scientist so of course the US public would vote overwhelmingly against Iran on anything for a number of days but take this poll in a coupld of weeks and we will be back to "no help for Israel" again.

You call only those from the list whom you know will answer the questions to your liking - you'll get 56 or 75% or 90% poll results in your favour. We should not get mislaid by these companies whose job is to make sensational news and get more business. No war is good - Period. US have more than 4000, Russia have more than 3000, China, France, UK, India, Pakistan and even us have in 100's - 1 or 10 bombs with Iran will not make any difference.

Very misleading headline. "Most" would mean at least 2/3 or 3/4 - 56% does not mean most, it means slightly more than half.

90 % of the American population cannot name Israel's or Iran's capital city. Therefore I'm wondering how they manage to have an opinion about the Israeli or Iranian nuclear threat. Don't trust a poll you yourself manipulated... :) Fighting a war is for losers!

The American public has not shown itself to be too discriminating when it comes to the use of military action: how well thought out are the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, after all. With 2 oceans between us and the rest of the world, and 9/11 already a distant memory, it's no surprise that Americans are so casual about yet another foolish use of the military.

So what else is new? It only proves most Americans are morons. A far more interesting poll would be if they would back an American (!) attack on Iran.

Heck, the Kaiser was afraid of the growing power of France and Russia and wanted WW1 to be his preemptive war to "get them before they get us" - how'd that one work out? In late 2006, George W. Bush asked if military action against Iran's nuclear program was feasible. The unanimous answer was no. Air strikes could take out some of Iran's nuclear facilities, but there was no way to eliminate all of them. Some of the nuclear labs were located in heavily populated areas; others were deep underground. And Iran's ability to strike back by unconventional means, especially through its Hizballah terrorist network, was formidable. Another war in the Middle East is the last thing we need, it would be disastrous on a number of levels.

I have no desire to see Israel succeed in any further attacks against any of its neighbors - including Iran!

Bush attacked Iraq against warnings from the Saudis, Israelis and his own CIA. All warned that toppling Sadam would free the Iranians to threaten Arab oil and the entire ME. But Bush, for reasons still making no sense, opened the attack corridor to the Arabian Peninsula, invited Ahmadinejad as tactical partner since most Iraqis are Shiite and protected by Iran; and Iran could keep them quiet or encourage attacks on US troops in Iraq. Bottom line, Bush freed Iran to pursue the bomb and hegemony in ME, created situation of US dependent on Iran to protect her troops in Iraq, and now Afghanistan. That primary US concern, not an Iranian-supplied terrorist bomb exploding in NYC tomorrow. And certainly not a nuclear arms race in the ME, or the threat of nuclear war to the region. In short, American strategic attention limited to today. Deal with tomorrow when it arrives.

Curious If most Americans that would support Israel's attack on Iran would also support it if he blood of American Servicemen would be shed in the process. No doubt these polls are true. The good citizens of the US are thirsting for a new war, one that could be won. Obviously, should Israel fail, then "Aw shucks"! Obama knows, that he may well be a one term president, therefore he will now focus on the economy and health care. He will not be drawn into another front, for the military adventures are becoming rather tedious and the good people of the US are now tired of this ongoing war that is fought in those strange countries that many have no idea whether its the ME , African Continent or Asia. The question is, do these same people realize that a protracted war with the Iranian Regime could well include the USA.? My thinking is, any poll does not mean a thing, people's feelings on a subject are normally base on the information or misinformation they are being fed by their media. A poll basically reflect how successful the media was in moulding their way of thinking.

Seems to me that if Israel is 'allowed' to carry out a preemptive strike against Iran because it might be building nuclear weapons, then Iran should have the right to a preemptive strike on Israel in case it uses the nuclear weapons it already has. The only other comment about this poll is that it shows 56 percent of Americans should not be allowed to vote. They are idiots.

Yes, the level of knowledge (particularly geography) in the US is appalling. -however, in a nation of 340 million, if 40% oppose bombing, that is 136 million people- a rather large number and not one to be discounted. As for the poll itself, no information was given on polling methods, so it is impossible to judge its validity. Then there is the 'liberal' media issue...It used to be true, but in the last 15 years, with the popularity of fox news and talk radio, the pendulum has swung. Most Americans now get their information from right wing media. The primary message one can get from this poll and others is that the propaganda machine in the US is very successful. Göebbels would be proud.

It gives the impression that Israel has the option to halt an existing Iranian attempt to reach nuclear capability at any time. None of that is certain, not the existance of an Iranian nuclear program, not the Israeli chance of stalling it if it did exist (forget about stopping it completely) and least of all the effects of such a strike (wars, US involvement, civilian deaths etc). If such factors were taken into consideration I think the percentage in favour of a strike would be much lower.

It's a different result if taken in the rest of the country. Especially the mid-West and West coast, where I'd bet it would be 80% against. Israel has nukes, Iran doesn't - so who is the problem here.

The poll itself is questionable. How were the questions phrased? Like if Israel starts a war with Iran, would the US be willing to sacrifice 1000s of soldiers and another trillion dollars to end it? How would the US like $200/barrel oil? I doubt you'd get 56% agreeing to that.

To estimate the significance of a poll, one has to know the size of the sample which has been probed, and the standard error, which can be expected. The article doesn't give any information about this. If the sample was only 30 or 50 people who have been interviewed, the poll is insignificant and the standard error is huge. I also never heard of this TIPP Market Research institute.

The US needs Iranian help to get troops out of ME but impossible with current Gov. in Iran. An invasion maybe the only way to fully stop Iran from getting nukes but US military is pushed to the limit right now and draft out of question. Another problem is that Iran maybe setting up to build its nukes in N. Korea by trading uranium fuel rods for plutonium with a lot of cash/oil added.

I already said this once, but perhaps not as clearly as I could have. I'm perfectly prepared to grant that the Israeli operation may be a complete success militarily. I'll even grant that you may have the support of the United States when you do it. You need to consider the results of your last three military successes. Lebanon 2006. Cast Lead. The Flotilla. You had our unequivocal support for all three of those as well.

The US will not help Israel when Iran retaliates, because of the repercussion that may arise from other muslim countries. So the match will result in draw and Israel will be isolated further since it provoked the war first. The percentage of casuality on the Isreali side will be more based on the population, and Telaviv will be most hit. On Iran side, Tehran will be hit with casualities. Jordan, Turkey and Egypt will severe their ties with Israel, so US will distance itself from Israel.

A poll by a supporter of right wing politics and in search of buyer for his services by big business - is nothing to count on. Don't count this American as backing any neo-con war on Iran to allow more military contractor plundering of our taxes.

The question of how many Americans they are willing to kill off was not asked. Nor was the question of a prolonged US war with and occupation of Iran. And with Republicans, the question should also be asked, how many $$Hundred Billions a month in increased taxes they are willing to pay, and for how many decades? This was a BOGUS polling exercise.

Once again, Americans are convinced that a wimpy faraway country is a 'threat.' Even Iran's attempts over the years to retaliate against getting screwed with by US/Israel in its own region have only been partly successful.

The islamic/military dictatorship in Iran uses Israel as a means of justifying its existence, but the real necessity for Iran nuke weapons is twofold: (1) to provide a deterrent to the Pakistan "Sunni Bomb" if and when Pakistan and its nukes fall into the hands of Sunni/Wahabi extremists who will do anything to cleanse Islam of the Shi'a polytheistic heresy and (2) for the geopolitical "game" between Iran and Russia to establish hegemony over islamic regions of central asia and to support power games over the mineral wealth of the Caspian region. The US has nothing to gain from stopping Iran from gaining nuke weapons, and Israel would face no real threat from Iran nukes as long as Israel keeps up its nuke weapons deterrent and keeps developing anti-missile capability.

I suspect that the 56 % American majority that wants Israel to attack iran, would be reticent about ordering the US Air Force to attack if Israel cannot volunteer to do the dirty job. In any case, if either the US, EU, or Israel start a war with Iran, this will be very long.

None story, I doubt that the Americans asked if israel should bomb a muslim country actually know where iran is

there really is no reason to wait....all that will do is give them time ti finish off a bomb. Obama said september 2009 was the red line in the sand date and here we are midway though 2010. I am waiting to see just who this Mr. Obama is...will he really be what people hope he would become, or will he go down as one of the worst appeasers of all time? He can be great, or he can be responsable for iran ushering in a new frightening era....as most intelligent people know, there are no good choices here....IF russia and the US really have "reset", then its time for russia to match their words and get on side with this freakshow called iran.
