Poll: Most Americans would back Israel attack on Iran

56 percent of Americans support an Israeli strike to prevent Iran from building nuclear weapons, according to a poll conducted by a U.S. research firm.

More than half of Americans would support Israel taking military action against Iran, according to a poll released on Wednesday.

The poll was conducted by TIPP, the polling unit of TechnoMetrica Market Intelligence, a U.S. research firm of both syndicated and custom Market Research solutions.

According to the poll, 43 percent of U.S. Democrats approve of Israel taking military action against Iran to prevent Iran from building nuclear weapons, while 40 percent disapprove. However, when Republicans were asked the same question, 74 percent voiced approval while 17 percent disapproved. Among independents, 56 percent approved of military action while 30 percent disapproved.

Overall, 56 percent of Americans approved a military strike, while 30 percent disapproved, according to the poll.

Meanwhile, the NewsMax website reported on Thursday that a separate Pew Research poll showed similar results, with 66 percent of Americans preferring a strike, while 24 percent objected to it. According to the Pew Research poll, which included 22 countries last month, a majority in 16 of the states preferred a military strike over tolerating a nuclear Iran.

Last week, The Washington Post reported that U.S. Senator John McCain said that he did not believe Israel was considering military action against Iran over its contentious nuclear program.

"I don't believe we are at the point of making that kind of decision, nor is the Israeli government, given the state that Iran is in now as far as the development of their nuclear weapons is concerned," McCain told reporters after talks with Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi and Defense Minister Ehud Barak.

I think the poll was taken at a time when the US and Iran were arguing over the defection/nondefection of an Iranian scientist so of course the US public would vote overwhelmingly against Iran on anything for a number of days but take this poll in a coupld of weeks and we will be back to "no help for Israel" again.

We should not get mislaid by these companies whose job is to make sensational news and get more business. No war is good - Period. US have more than 4000, Russia have more than 3000, China, France, UK, India, Pakistan and even us have in 100's - 1 or 10 bombs with Iran will not make any difference.

The American public has not shown itself to be too discriminating when it comes to the use of military action: how well thought out are the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, after all. With 2 oceans between us and the rest of the world, and 9/11 already a distant memory, it's no surprise that Americans are so casual about yet another foolish use of the military.

    • 16.07.10
    • 15:52

Heck, the Kaiser was afraid of the growing power of France and Russia and wanted WW1 to be his preemptive war to "get them before they get us" - how'd that one work out? In late 2006, George W. Bush asked if military action against Iran's nuclear program was feasible. The unanimous answer was no. Air strikes could take out some of Iran's nuclear facilities, but there was no way to eliminate all of them. Some of the nuclear labs were located in heavily populated areas; others were deep underground. And Iran's ability to strike back by unconventional means, especially through its Hizballah terrorist network, was formidable. Another war in the Middle East is the last thing we need, it would be disastrous on a number of levels.

Bush attacked Iraq against warnings from the Saudis, Israelis and his own CIA. All warned that toppling Sadam would free the Iranians to threaten Arab oil and the entire ME. But Bush, for reasons still making no sense, opened the attack corridor to the Arabian Peninsula, invited Ahmadinejad as tactical partner since most Iraqis are Shiite and protected by Iran; and Iran could keep them quiet or encourage attacks on US troops in Iraq. Bottom line, Bush freed Iran to pursue the bomb and hegemony in ME, created situation of US dependent on Iran to protect her troops in Iraq, and now Afghanistan. That primary US concern, not an Iranian-supplied terrorist bomb exploding in NYC tomorrow. And certainly not a nuclear arms race in the ME, or the threat of nuclear war to the region. In short, American strategic attention limited to today. Deal with tomorrow when it arrives.

Were it not for abhorred Westerners these countries still would have amounted to nothing being that their religion does not encourage free-thought and education. To all those bashing America, you all have a debt for the freedoms you enjoy. Even Europe's defense police revolves around repelling an aggressor's attack until the Evil Americans come to the rescue yet again. The freedoms Americans enjoy, one being the dreaded, evil Second Amendment, will serve to protect her citizens should America be infiltrated by islamists, like Europe has. What a cesspool. If Israel attack Iran I'll lose my very last reasons to defend and support Israel. It's hard enough to defend Israel as a democratic peaceful country because of the occupation and settlements but if Israel attack another country, not even a neighbour, then Israel wont show any wish for peace at all. It's time for the people of Israel to oppose the wars the leaders of Israel seems to love so much

Since WW II you have to say to the U.S.A. Thank You for saving Europe from Germany's Reich. You don't want to thank them, so you simply hate Americans. THE TRUTH IS THAT EVERY FREE MAN IN THE WORLD TODAY HAS A DEBT TOWARD THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. About Iran, its much more Europe's problem than you think, because were not dealing only with Iran now. We're dealing with Turkey which has an alliance with Iran (how many Turks in Europe? maybe you know). We'll also have to deal with Egypt whose regime is going to be taken by the "Muslim Brotherhood" in the future (btw, Hamas is an offshoot of them). About our struggle in Israel, we are simply right. You need to read history more. What you are doing now is creating fear for something that is not real. The nuclear program in Iran is something the public supports. Why? because they all need power. Almost everyone in Iran, be it supporters and those that defy the regime, supports this cause. Ahmedinejad is using the nuclear case to loosen the focus from human rights abuses, something the regime actually listen to the international community when they make statements against their actions. When the world reacts like it does to the nuclear problem, it plays into the hands of Ahmedi. He thrives on the condemnations etc from the international community. He can then say that the world is stopping Iran from getting its legitimate power needs. Fighting the cause like USA and Israel is doing, is the wrong approach and can only cause more problems then it solves. Get the international focus back on the human rights abuse in Iran, there is more then enough, so we dont play from Ahmedi's flute. But the worst thing about your post is the lies about Turkey. YOU have to remember that Turkey is a NATO member. Israel is not. That means that no matter what, we are allies with Turkey and not with Israel. You are now trying to make up accusations about one of our military partners. One partner we are obliged to defend if someone attacks it. You as an Israeli citizen should be happy that Turkey did NOT pull out the NATO card when IDF attacked and murdered Turkish civilians. No matter what you say, it is never right to murder someone in international waters on a civilian ship. And ESPECIALLY when we all should know how extremely nationalistic Turkey is. No matter what, a war against Iran would be devastating for Israel. Iran has over 10x the Israeli population and 3/4th of the pop is under 30 years. That is a lot of soldiers in a war. Fight together with the Iranian people for a free Iran. Bombing or attacking them will just destabilize the region even more and will make your part of the world even worse. And take it from someone who has been in Iran and Syria several times; The support for the regimes is not high. Maybe its hard to see from how syrians carry pictures of the president etc, but when you get to know them they say what they mean. In Iran its even more open and people stop you in the streets just to say how horrible it is. Help them, dont bomb them. That will force the citizens to defend their country, when they most probably wouldnt want to do that.

Well yes: dismiss Ahmadenijehad and let the fresh winds of democracy blow through the stagnated Iran. Had the Iraqis brought down Saddam and his adm., they 'd have spared over one million people's lives and the country's infrastructure and saved the country from current terrorism. Had the Germans brought down Hitler, there 'd not have been the devastating IIWW. All it takes to avoid war is to do the right, sane thing: remove the madmen from power, so that we all may live and thrive at peace! SO: I'm sending this wish to the Iraninan people in order to avoid a looming war nobody wants. The power to do the right thing and save us all from a war is in your hands. TO the Europeans I say: we may not forget that Israel is Europe's buffer that is protecting Europe from what we still have left from Europe's democratic life-style, freedom and democracy, which are being restricted, like freedom of expression, or lost forever, under heavy islamization process underway. IF Israel goes, Europe goes. IF Jews go, European Christians go next. SO: one more time: do we have a choice, if we, the free world, want to prevail free and democratic? Iran's nuclear deterrance affects the whole free, democrtatic world, not only Israel, who 'll fight alone and take the strikes at herself on behalf of all of us, so that we may continue to live as free men in Europe, too.

No doubt these polls are true. The good citizens of the US are thirsting for a new war, one that could be won. Obviously, should Israel fail, then "Aw shucks"! The US cannot fail, should push come to shove, for the political angle today, is far different to the heady days when the gracious president took office. Pres. Obama knows, that he may well be a one term president, therefore he will now focus on the economy and health care. He will not be drawn into another front, for the military adventures are becoming rather tedious and the good people of the US are now tired of this ongoing war that is fought in those strange countries that many have no idea whether its the ME , African Continent or Asia. So, a sideshow, a great shock an awe spectacle by Israel may well be a welcome change. The question is, do these same people realize that a protracted war with the Iranian Regime could well include the USA.? I firmly believe that by bombing the Regime, missiles will not only fly into Israel, but into Europe,Gulf States and into some other ME countries, such as Egypt. The Iranian Regime is not some loose knit bunch of thugs, its a well organized, highly trained specialist force that will not physically cross borders, for they already have in place their respective allies, armed to the teeth. Whatever the plans may well be, by Israel, they are not up for revision less so discussion for visiting senators or the media. The very sensitivety of such an attack has to be kept behind the scenes in some dark and obscure corner out of sight to all but the actual decision makers that know the consequences and dangers thereof. Good day to all.

Yes, the level of knowledge (particularly geography) in the US is appalling. -however, in a nation of 340 million, if 40% oppose bombing, that is 136 million people- a rather large number and not one to be discounted. As for the poll itself, no information was given on polling methods, so it is impossible to judge its validity. Then there is the 'liberal' media issue...It used to be true, but in the last 15 years, with the popularity of fox news and talk radio, the pendulum has swung. Most Americans now get their information from right wing media. The primary message one can get from this poll and others is that the propaganda machine in the US is very successful. Göebbels would be proud.

It gives the impression that Israel has the option to halt an existing Iranian attempt to reach nuclear capability at any time. None of that is certain, not the existance of an Iranian nuclear program, not the Israeli chance of stalling it if it did exist (forget about stopping it completely) and least of all the effects of such a strike (wars, US involvement, civilian deaths etc). If such factors were taken into consideration I think the percentage in favour of a strike would be much lower.

Such an attack will be the end of Obama (for failing to prevent it) and for many of those in Congress who are encouraging this. Unlike their fraudulently elected leaders, the vast majority of Americans are focused on what is truly an economic depression - real unemployment 22%, 20% of citizens on food stamps. This polling organization and others can rig questions to get the numbers they want. But make no mistake about it, there is next to zero support for an attack on Iran and more war in the Middle East and South Asia.

Americans are good at starting wars and are ingenious as how to get out of them. Viatnam, Iraq and Afghanistan are just a few examples. Imagine this: Israel start a war with Iran, Iran responds and ritaliates by invading parts of Iraq or one of the rich gulf states. The US then declare a war on Iran to liberate occupied territories Arab territories. Thousands of US soldiers will be killed in the war and acts of trrorism will threaten American interets all over the globe. After a few years, thousands of body bags and billions of dollars spent, the Americans will decide that the war was a big mistake. But who can stop the Americans from starting another war?

March 2003, ABC News/Washington Post poll: 62% of Americans favor an invasion of Iraq. Present-day Iraq War approval, from the same source: 64% "do not believe the war is worth fighting". Afghanistan invasion approval: in October 2001, 88% of Americans. June 2010: 53% of Americans think "the war in Afghanistan has not been worth fighting". Enough is enough, seriously. I'm no great fan of Obama but as the poll numbers show, it's a damn good thing we aren't being led by a Republican at the moment.

I have yet to hear a sane reason for why "Iran is crucial". Pakistan has nukes. Pakistan hates America. America has not gone kabloom. Ditto Russia (well, the USSR during the Cold War) and North Korea. There are many countries in the world that have nukes, many unstable ones that aren't friendly at all with us, yet we're okay. And need I remind you that our nuclear arsenal is the largest in the world, and we actively violate the NPT by giving other countries nuclear supplies? What makes us better than Iran? We are just as guilty if not more so. Also, I don't see Iran's regime as "satanic". They're bad, but there are far worse governments in the world today.

The aircraft, an Airbus A300B2 operated by Iran Air as IR655, was flying from Bandar Abbas, Iran, to Dubai, UAE, when it was destroyed by the U.S. Navy's guided missile cruiser USS Vincennes, killing all 290 passengers and crew aboard, including 66 children, ranking it seventh among the deadliest airliner fatalities. The non-Muslim world has heard once too often about militant Islam's march towards a world Caliphate and became jaded by it, but Iran's bizarre statements and behavior is beginning to shake them out of their stupor and realize that Iran's literal hell-bent drive for nuclear weapons, their parallel long range delivery system development, their desire to proliferate nuclear technology amongst other Islamic nations, their support for terror organizations worldwide, their crazed rabid rhetoric to destroy a member nation, and their iron fist rule at home that crushes the skulls of their beautiful, captive citizens might really be the foreshadowing of another Aryan-style reich drive to establish a long and brutal Caliphate reign for those who don't share their faith.

And maybe they wouldnt exist if it wasnt for Israel. I beleive Iran and israel would make fantastic partners. If only Israel wished to make this happen. Together they would become a shining example of true democracy but again israel is the one that must stop having double standards for the people of the land and learn to share and truly capture what is the essence and true potential of both the Paletinian and Israeli people.

      • 09:38

Iran's leaders are very proud to broadcast that they went successfully through an Islamic revolution and wish to export this movement to other parts of the world. Khomeini, neck deep in his full-blown war with Iraq back in '82 called that engagement the "War of the Liberation of Jerusalem". Now Iran in its defense for its support for Hezbollah and Hamas claims that it only gives them moral backing and that it only exports religion, even though their theology is sharply honed into military instruments of death reserved for use against Israel. Spend some time talking to the radical Iranian Muslims around you to gauge what grand Islamic dreams and visions they see for their country and regime in the middle east and beyond instead of escaping and familiarizing yourself with the Simpsons.

The islamic/military dictatorship in Iran uses Israel as a means of justifying its existence, but the real necessity for Iran nuke weapons is twofold: (1) to provide a deterrent to the Pakistan "Sunni Bomb" if and when Pakistan and its nukes fall into the hands of Sunni/Wahabi extremists who will do anything to cleanse Islam of the Shi'a polytheistic heresy and (2) for the geopolitical "game" between Iran and Russia to establish hegemony over islamic regions of central asia and to support power games over the mineral wealth of the Caspian region. The US has nothing to gain from stopping Iran from gaining nuke weapons, and Israel would face no real threat from Iran nukes as long as Israel keeps up its nuke weapons deterrent and keeps developing anti-missile capability.

I suspect that the 56 % American majority that wants Israel to attack iran, would be reticent about ordering the US Air Force to attack if Israel cannot volunteer to do the dirty job. In any case, if either the US, EU, or Israel start a war with Iran, this will be very long.

What the American public dont know is the the distance between Israel and Iran. They do not have enough air to air refuelling planes with enough leg fuel to carry out a heavy air raid. Some of the tankers and the fighter/bombers will get shot down on the way back. Its delusional to even contemplate an attack over that distance and expect to overfly hostile countries without getting shot down. Plus Iran will have the S300 AA system in place soon and its a good system.

Yes, 707s are still flying. So are KC-135, the 'design life' predecessor to the 'fail safe' 707. Most of America's tanker assets are KC-135s. All of Israel's are the superior 707s. And yes, you are correct, Israel lacks sufficient tanker assets to attack Iran unless a long war of attrition is to be pursued.

Still, it's not unlikely the U.S. allowed some joint refueling training exercises or a "peaceful purposes only" loan of a tanker. Refusing such tech would probably be a waste of time anyway, as Israel could probably find another source or make an adequate version of their own without too much difficulty. At least if the IAF budget wasn't strained rearming from recent adventures in Lebanon and Gaza. What a shame, that $3B/yr doesn't go as far as it used to.

The question posed is whether one people support the attack of a second people upon a third people to "prevent" them "building" nuclear weapons -- which means that one must answer the question with the absolute knowledge that Iran is actively trying to "build" this type of munition. There is much that could be said about this topic, but aside from the dumbfounding hypocrisy which overrides this serious issue, the fact is that while naivety is regretful, ignorance should be a crime.

About the same percentage of Americans would support military action by Israel against any country that doesn't speak English or have bikini models on their tourism website. Should Israel invade Bermuda? Only 42% of Americans would support that. Should frozen dinners be thoroughly cooked? 71% of the American public feels strongly about that.

Israel is converting it's 8th 707 tanker. Go to Nevatim, observe how many 707s the 120 squadron have. Figure out how many F-15s and F-16s they could give pre- and post-strike refueling to over the Persian Gulf. Then figure out what their probability of surviving over the Persian Gulf during that time. . . If Israel is willing to strike, it must be willing to lose a great deal of it's ability to strike. And if it loses many tanker assets on the first strike it will lack the ability to make the strikes on the next two to four days to finish attacking Iran's nuclear program. And then we must ask whether Iran will decide to give up or keep fighting. The USA told Saddam that Iran would give up. . . but then we believed the Iraqi's would give up. Someone paid to produce a tailor-made poll designed to tell Israelis - no notice in the news here - that if Israel strikes, America will leap into a third regional war and save Israel's cookies. Don't count on it.

So, according to the leftist manifesto, if the consensus says to do something--by all means, do it. Personally, I think that Israel should do it for the right reasons--and they need ot do it now while the Iranians are still getting ready. The right reasons: It will give at least a decade of peace without the threat of a nuclear Iran and will cut off the supply of missles to hezbollah. Just do it!
