Fifty-eight percent of U.S. citizens polled think America should back Israel – up 7 percent since July.

Support for Israel among Americans has jumped following the resumption of Middle East peace talks, according to poll findings released Tuesday.

A poll conducted for the Israel Project, a pro-Israel non-profit group based in the United States, showed a strong majority believing that the Israeli government is committed to making peace with the Palestinians.

Of 800 people questioned, 58 percent thought the U.S. should support Israel – a jump of 7 percent on a similar poll in July.

Seven percent thought the U.S. should support the Palestinians, while six percent said America should back neither side.

A majority of respondents (58 percent) also thought Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was committed to making peace, while 40 percent thought the same of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

“Support for Israel among Americans remains strong and steady,” said pollster Neil Newhouse of Public Opinion Strategies.

The poll of 800 likely voters conducted between September 9 and September 12 by Public Opinion Strategies and Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research found, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

58 percent said Netanyahu was committed to peace?!?! Where was this poll taken? In Israel Project's own office?

by claiming most people support a certain ideal, many would ponder if a majority was right then their thoughts were wrong, quite decieving in the wrong hands. i have never trusted polls nor will i ever.

Probably the only people to support Israel in majority are the US citizens. In the Western Hemisphere, the US are probably the most ignorant of all when it comes to International relations... not too positive...

So if the majority of the American supports Israel, why is that Israel refuses to have the American in the negotiation table? Only shows that the Israeli Government was able to dupe the American people

I'd like to meet just one of those people polled who believed that Netanyahu is serious about the peace process. If I could I would have little trouble selling him some prime swamp land in the Mojave desert. How gullible and ignorant can these people be. This is a gov't violating international law, binding UNSC resolutions and ICJ rulings at the Hague. These are not actions indicating you are serious about peace. Oh please!!

What does "support" mean? This is different to each person. How were the questions asked? Who were these 800 people (800, that's it)? Do they represent the demographics of the U.S.? In the end, I don't care about people's opinons on "Netanyahu [being] committed to making peace" or that "40 percent thought the same of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas," much less "believing that the Israeli government is committed to making peace with the Palestinians." When those things actually become facts, not people's beliefs, then I'll care.

This research shows the problem. The US cannot be an impartial mediator. The peace negotiations need someone who will be impartial not promote one side,

      US is the only mediator..
      • Matt
      • 14.09.10
      • 22:19

..that could ever bring about any peace agreement. The fact is, the Israelis will never trust anyone else to mediate from a standpoint of having Israel's interests at heart, especially not the Europeans. The Palestinians, on the other hand, believe (and rightfully so) that nobody besides the US has the strength or will to urge Israel to sign a peace agreement, even if they have no illusions about who we support. The fact that the US and Israel are so close makes us less impartial, but it makes us uniquely positioned to push Israel toward peace. The other important part, for both sides, is who will be "enforcing" this peace after it is signed. Nobody on planet Earth who was alive for what happened in the Balkans in the 90's trusts Europe or the UN to enforce much of anything. When there have to be soldiers lining the border between Israel and future Palestine, they wont be IDF, or Palestinians, or Europeans, or UN peacekeepers, they'll be US Marines. The Israelis already know that we'll do anything to protect them from attack, and the Palestinians know that the Israelis wouldn't dare attack US soldiers in order to get to them. As for the other two suggestions, Russia and China, anybody who thinks that any country's government views Russia as a credible peace broker needs their head examined. And there is no oil, steel, coal, natural gas, or any other major industrial resource between the Jordan River and Mediterranean Sea, and the Chinese Jews, Christians, and Muslims are problems that Beijing would rather just forget. It is hard for me to imagine that China could care any less what happens here.

It was never their land to concede. Go look it up. The land was mainly the Ottomans, inherited by the UK once the land was lost in WWI and then pretty much left up for grabs while the UN tried to figure out what to do with it. The best you could give me is that Egypt and Jordan gave up their claims to this land last, but to who? To a group of people whose national 'consciousness' came to being a full 3 years before Israel won the lands in '67? I didnt make it up...the PLO was formed in 1964. To what end? If they are truly a separate entity, why didn't Egypt of Jordan grant them statehood while they administrated the land? You are confusing a political construct for a real nation, and you aren't fooling anyone...least of all me.

Sure. They are victims of the British like Israel and victims of their Arab brothers who never saw fit to give them their own state when they have almost 20 years to do so. So why is Israel being forced to shoulder the burden of their screw ups?

UK promised national self-determination to all Arabs, and also to the Zionists in the Balfour Declaration. Neither the British nor the UN ever intended to give most, let alone all of Palestine to the Zionists. Israeli territory today is the result of illegal military conquest and occupation. Look it up

BHO totally must have a second Nobel. Question: who will pay?
    • Israeli
    • 14.09.10
    • 12:11

Palestinians will sign that all their accusations are finished. Israel will give up land. American tax payers will give moneys necessary to "pad" the deal from all sides. BHO will get his second Nobel. After a while the money will be spent. Palestinians will recall they never agreed to recognize Israel as a Jewish state. Israeli left will shout we are an Apartheid state as regarding Israeli Arabs. International left media will shout Israel has no legitimate rights to exist anywhere as a Jewish state. Iran will lead an all out war of Arabs states against Israel. We win and free all territories back again. At the end: Palestinians will still insists on all their accusations, Israel will have again all historical land, BHO will keep his second Nobel, and only the American tax payer will wonder what happened to his moneys. I guess by now, after bailing out all Americas riches investment banks with confiscated tax moneys, the American tax payer must be used to it.
