Police probing suspicions of embezzlement in Israeli defense establishment
AG launches probe after internal check finds suspected misappropriation of about NIS 2 million; last month authorities investigate Mossad official for alleged financial irregularities.
Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein has authorized a criminal investigation into the financial dealings within Israel's defense establishment, following evidence of embezzlement.
Information attained by Haaretz indicated that an internal probe revealed possible misappropriation of about NIS 2 million.
A legal official with knowledge of the investigation's details said that one defense official has been suspended as a result of the probe's findings.
According to sources, police investigations division head Yoav Sigalovich assigned the probe, which is now nearing its culmination, to the Unit for International Crime Investigations investigation.
"The case was under police investigation and was supervised by the central district of the State Prosecutor's Office," said the Justice Ministry in response.
Last month, it was reported that the Unit for International Crime Investigations has questioned a Mossad section head in recent months, over suspicions of financial and organizational irregularities.
A complaint was filed against the Mossad official, whose rank is equivalent of an IDF major general.
