Peres, Barak add a few laughs to their U.S. trips
President Peres embraces Barbara Walters on The View, and Defense Minister Barak chuckles as he gets locked inside the car while his U.S. counterpart awaits him in the pouring rain.
Defense Minister Ehud Barak and President Shimon Peres, amid high-level talks with U.S. officials, found the time to add a few laughs to their visits to the United States on Wednesday.
Barbara Walters hosted Peres on The View, and after asking the president about Israel's intentions regarding Iran, to which Peres replied, "All options are on the table… the world is in danger if Iran gets a nuclear bomb," she asked, "I understand that you are on Facebook?"
Peres laughed and asked the audience, "May I ask you to be my friends?"
He then added, “I want to tell you - today, under the internet, we can make peace among people, not just among governments. You can talk to each other freely…the response is unbelievable. And the nation would be delighted if you’ll answer my invitation to be friends [of] peace, and of mine.”
The interview between Walters and Peres, who are apparently friends, ended with a hug and a farewell kiss.
Meanwhile, Ehud Barak, who was in Washington to meet U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, provided his counterpart with some comic relief when he struggled to get out of the limousine, leaving Panetta waiting in the pouring rain, chuckling.
According to an ABC blog, Panetta was at the bottom of the steps to the Pentagon ready to greet Barak, as he does with all dignitaries, but had to wait in the rain while security officers struggled to open the door to Barak's car.
Panetta apparently found the sight amusing and stood there chuckling and jokingly asked if they were trying to keep Barak inside the limo. Barak finally emerged, smiling, and greeted Panetta with a hug, and the two rushed inside the building.
Barak and Panetta then proceeded to speak of more serious matters, such as Iran, Syria, U.S.-Israel defense ties, and ongoing changed in the Middle East, the Pentagon spokesperson said.
